WATCH LIVE: Trump Announces Border Wall Emergency Decision at WH Rose Garden

President Donald Trump is giving a speech in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, presumably to announce his decision regarding the situation at the border. The remarks are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. ET.

Indications are that Trump will sign Congress’ latest, bipartisan spending agreement that will allow the country to avoid going back into a government shutdown. However, because the deal only provides a fraction of the funding Trump has demanded for border security, he’s expected to declare a national emergency so he can appropriate $8 billion from other areas of the government for his southern border wall.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) confirmed yesterday that Trump will take this approach and that he will support the emergency declaration. Several of the president’s other allies have gotten behind him on this, though a number of conservatives have condemned this approach for a variety of reasons as well.

Critics argue that invoking a national emergency would be setting a dangerous precedent and constitute an abuse of executive power. As such, the declaration is bound to face legal challenges regarding whether the president has the authority to circumvent Congress to grab federal funding in this matter.
