On Friday night, Bill Maher addressed the ongoing tensions between White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL).
The Real Time host accused Kelly of “smearing” and “lying” about the congresswoman on behalf of President Trump.
“He was supposed to be the ‘Trumpminder,’ but now he acts like Trump,” Maher elaborated. “Are you gonna be this guy that everyone says ‘you are a man of unimpeachable integrity’ or you can take political hit shots and be the hatchet man. You can’t do both.”
Conservative writer Erick Erickson didn’t believe Kelly intentionally lied, but he should still apologize.
“Right now, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he misspoke––probably some other person in the White House gave him the wrong facts, but he needs to apologize for it,” Erickson said.
CNN contributor Margaret Hoover compared the chief of staff former Press Secretary Sean Spicer, saying the first half of the presser was “really good,” but then he went down the “Spicer road.”
“The president demands that people who work for him go out and do his bidding at the expense of their own moral authority,” Hoover said. “And this is where Kelly sorta lost that.”
