Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took a victory lap Wednesday afternoon for the unlikely deal on the debt limit and Hurricane Harvey relief funding that he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) struck with President Donald Trump.
Speaking on Capitol Hill, Schumer offered some rare complimentary words for the president after Trump abandoned his party and opted to deal with Democrats.
“The President listened to the arguments,” Schumer said. “We think we made a very reasonable and strong argument. And to his credit, he went with the better argument.”
The Senate Minority Leader wouldn’t speak to Trump’s thought process, but called the unlikely pact a win for the country.
“You’ll have to ask him why he did that,” he said, “but it’s for the good of the nation that this happened.”
