Killer Whale Video: Jane Velez-Mitchell And Jack Hanna Shout Over Shamu Tragedy

Political discourse is no longer the exclusive province for spirited and emotional debates on cable news. You can now include the ethical debate over keeping wild animals in captivity – or in this specific instance, killer whales. As has been reported earlier, a Sea World trainer was tragically killed this week while working with an orca in captivity. CNN anchor Ali Velshi had on guest Jane Velez-Mitchell and Jack Hanna to discuss this calamity, and things got really heated.

    I watched this last night. I did not think that Jack Hanna was out of line at all.

    However, Jane was rude. Especially the comment about the hat. My opinion is that maybe she does need a hat – one that would put some sense in her brains.

    So…CNN can’t afford to have a good signal with somebody in Ohio? What the hell was that about?

    Whoa, that is one angry woman.

    Colby I think your headline is more than a bit misleading. All the raised voices were on Jane’s shoulders.

    Don’t know what Jane Velez-Mitchell’s expertise is but I’ve watched her show a few times and she goes nuts about controlling the human population, then attacks people like Palin for hunting and controlling the wild animal population. She doesn’t make sense and is militant.

    This is very unfortunate incident for the wonderful lady that lost her life as well as being unfortunate for the whale. When you work with wild animals you can’t let your guard down for one second.

    Also, it wasn’t Shamu it was Tilly.

    Check the video at about 4:58 – 5:05.

    When I first saw it I immediately thought that she has Joe Biden’s phony fleeting rictus smile down better than he does. :)

    Jack is the recognized spokesperson for zoos and aquariums, so when they’re attacked, it’s really his job to argue in their defense. As for Ms. Velez-Mitchell, she makes a valid point about animals in captivity, but as Jack alluded; an inner-city kid from New York, St. Louis, San Diego, etc. will likely never make it to the Indian Ocean and it’s highly unlikely that they’ll do it during childhood. Sure, the whole “kidnapping” thing may be an issue, but I’ve seen stats about zoo animals being born in captivity and are we prepared to make live animal interaction only available to the wealthy?

    Personally, I describe myself as comfortable and I’ve interacted with a lot of animals in the wild, but the other night, I was recalling with my kids the number of zoos that we’ve visited. The subject arose because of a panda “game” my daughter was playing through a Smithsonian-affiliated website and if it we’re for the zoo at Rock Creek, she would not have yet, seen a panda in real life.

    I love a good Obnoxious Host as much as the next person, but come on JVM is over the top and rediculous. Why, Why Why???? would anyone put her on TV? I realize she thinks she knows everything about everything, but someone at CNN should realize that she doesn’t, apparently ratings mean nothing to these people.

    Best line ” did you know that these animals travel 100 miles a day?” now she is out to educate Hanna… thanks Jane!

    Big dangerous animals, especially carnivorous ones, should not be used for entertainment.

    I just replayed this clip for my wife and on second viewing, I have to say that the way Ms. Velez-Mitchell came in with an opening, emotional salvo and then completely misses Jack’s point about beached whales, before she goes off on her idea that only the middle class or wealthy should get to see animals and that it’s better for us to disturb them in the wild, rather than breed animals in captivity… shows one of the problems with opinion media because like so many others, she obviously doesn’t have a clue as to what she’s talking about.

    Jane has now established a pattern, on her show or other CNN shows, of either having no formal training or background upon that which she speaks on, yettries to come across as an expert. When Hanna asked her what her background was in animal science and behavior he took the words right out of my mouth. Instead of merely stating an opinion, she attacked Hanna, the expert, was rude and came across as a nut. As a reporter, her credibility is slipping daily and she could do a little homework!

    Is Jane Velez Mitchell as ignorant as she comes across? My god!! Does she have a payee? I’ve seen her on her own show and she comes across as stupid + , but this interview with Hanna should be a career ending interview for Jane Velez Mitchell.

    Jane Velez Mitchell has a show on HLN called ‘Issues’.

    No doubt, she has em’.

    Dear Jack Hana,
    Some people said the whales and dolphins that day were not cooperating and there were reports that people watching dolphins off the coast were acting like they were agitated. Could this be because their inner clocks could feel the earthquakes coming? My first instinct after hearing of the whale and some dolphins was to check seismic activity and sure enough there was. I think the animals felt the earth movement. Could this be a reason for the behavior?

    God Damn Rich Cunt!!

    She’s annoying at best, but I will have to remember her comment as a comeback “Don’t take my inventory!”

    Whoever was it said that dangerous animals shouldn’t be used for entertainment…Zoo’s are for education. Circus’s are more entertainment. AND if you are so gung ho on animal abuse Ms. Jane….go after the communist country of China, and THEIR abuses of animals in circus’s and the crazy games they make animals perform.

    Oh, can’t go after the scary China, lets pick on Jack Hanna for God’s sake. Pick your battles wisely. PLUS when you start to support these loony fringe groups who in fact akin to terrorist (Sea Shepard). (Note I do think that hunting whales is not right.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neal-Porter/58400732 Neal Porter

    *sorry I forgot to add the end of that sentence….if you are saying how people like Sea Shepard are so great…thats very telling of how dangerous YOU are in fact.

  • Azarkhan

    1) I agree with Jane–let Tilikum go;
    2) There is no way I’d get my ass in the tank with Tilikum;
    3) Going forward, anything to do with Tilikum-feeding, cleaning, burping-should be done by the CEO of Sea World.
