Obama Ends Health Care Summit With Sober Outlook

video

For over seven hours party leaders from both House and Senate joined President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to discuss the future of Health Care. For policy wonks, it was heaven – less political theater than imagined, though not nearly as substantive as one might hope. The biggest debate seemed to center around procedure over substance and the event ended with the President’s sober outlook for the chances of real reform.

Having not watched the event, but reading about it, I would say there was a lot of substance involved. I don’t cotton to all the sob stories, everyone has one, but that wasn’t the purpose of this meeting. TThe American people have spoken — kill the bill in its current configuration and start over. Obama has spoken — the current bill will not be killed. Bottom line, no health care reform during the Obama administration, at least not comprehensive reform.

  • NewHampster

I am not an Obama lover ;-) but this was a day I really am a little more proud of my country. Not only did it take stones, it took intelligence from a lot of folks around that table.

The President for his part, shocked me that he can speak so well and with such depth about the subject and without his teleprompter.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

The man says “uh” after every other word. Can we stop deluding ourselves and admit how poor of a speaker he really is, please. Talk about lowering the bar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Boyer/602168764 John Boyer

    I.e. the Democrats got PWND!

    Paul Ryan ganked these n00bs.

  • Grammie

New Hampster said….”The President for his part, shocked me that he can speak so well and with such depth about the subject and without his teleprompter.”

I disagree. I really don’t think BHO would have called the 18″ high Health Care Bill that he and his party labored so mightily to bring forth a “PROP” if TOTUS had been invited.

Also, I agree with Narutoboy. The only time that the “uhs” were not front and center was when he had prepared statement type time. Note when they returned from the lunch break.

  • the real john t

“The man says “uh” after every other word.”

Maybe you should google ‘you tube bush uh’. Before you complain about someone saying “uh”.

  • blueblogger

New Hampster apparently you didn’t see the meeting he had with the Republicans. He was much stronger in that meeting and as usual very well prepared to speak without a teleprompter. I will never understand all the stuff about the teleprompter. Just another way to make fun of him.

Narutoboy, please do you not understand why a person speaks that way?? If that is the only thing you have to pick on him about I will take it.

    @the real john t

No one ever claimed Bush was an oratorical genius of superb skill. Obama, when he has the TOTUS, on the other hand….

It’s a fun, petty, partisan nitpick. But wasn’t mocking Bush as teh stoopid for mangling sentences petty and nitpicky as well?

I’m guessing the average lefty will say “Nooooooooooooooo, that was waaaaaaay different because everyone knows that Bush actually was teh stoopid!!!!1!!!” right?

  • the real john t

“No one ever claimed Bush was an oratorical genius of superb skill.”

Well who has claimed that about Obama?

  • NewHampster

blueblogger I’m not trying to make fun of him. I’ve just always thought he was lousy at impromptu thought. He is a horrendous debater and has never until today, shown me the depth that other say is there. Today he showed me how smart he really is.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ the real john t

Let me sum up your response for you: But-but-but-Bush!!!!111

I never claimed Bush didn’t stutter, nor did I claim he spoke elegantly – he didn’t. But neither is this stuttering, uh’ing empty suit that people like yourself hail as a great orator.

  • blueblogger

It is so nice to stop by here and read all the intelligent posts about our President. Instead of discussing the difference between his policies and yours the only thing you can find to discuss is his speech. Yes, he is a superb orator when giving a speech. However, when he is not giving a speech he speaks DIFFERENTLY. So what is your point??? And since many of you on here are into personal attacks on the President I suppose that you do everything right and are perfect. Afterall why else would you critize him???

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

He isn’t “superb” at giving a speech, either. Instead of the constant “uh’s,” he does these long pauses and elevates his voice, putting emphasis on all the wrong words. I guess that’s him trying to be like JFK, I guess. Typical Obama; always trying to be someone he’s not.

  • the real john t

“people like yourself hail as a great orator.”

Could you please show me where I’ve ever written something like that. That’s just like the RWers keep babbling about him being the Messiah. You don’t see any Democrats calling him that, just the RWers. They’re the ones that came up with it.

  • Grammie

Well, BB, I am all ears to hear all about the substance from today that I obviously missed b/c I thought the whole thing was just a big stunt.

I notice that no one has responded to what is my second comment at two threads on the substance that BHO showed us by calling the actual copy of the BILLS a PROP!

Now, I personally think that that spoke volumes that proved he has no substance but I am quite willing to read all the substance that you heard.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ real john t

Maybe not you personally, but a lot of people on the left have. Right wingers are the only one’s talking about him being the Messiah? Oh, really? Strange, I seem remember hearing a story about a Newsweek writer calling or comparing Obama to God. What about all of the comparisons to Moses that leftist made during the election? I have examples.

  • the real john t

    @ Narutoboy,

Could you maybe give some examples of the comparisons you’re talking about? And who was the Newsweek writer?

  • the real john t

    @ Narutoboy

OH! Forgive me. I missed the part where you said “you HEARD a story”. Well that’s some concrete proof there.

  • ChrisNH

A $2 Trillion bill that hasn’t even been scored by the CBO because Obama hid it until the last moment? Yeah, I want the blood on his hands…all of it. If he’s taking a pounding, GOOD.

  • marcus.lewis

Narutoboy: I’m doubting you watched the whole summit, as I certainly did not hear him say “‘uh’ after every other word”. I did hear him have those verbal ticks from time to time; however, with a subject matter that lacks salience like this one, I think it is a good thing for him to be doing critical thinking to formulate his impromptu responses to very complicated arguments. Its one thing for the senators to be reading some of their prepared statements and speaking for 4 minutes in their already prepared soundbits (and god both sides did that), but Obama was actually talking policy and recalling data that a specific senator has referenced. I find it hard to believe that is enough to say he really is a poor speaker. I think you would have a tough time finding me a person who is engaged in a Q&A essentially for 5 hours who did not use the verbal techniques that many people find annoying.

Furthermore, I think instead of bashing a persons vocabulary (people were awful to Bush), we need to concentrate on the substance. I see very limited amount of regular people who comment in here that actually take the time and thought to actually write a cohesive defense or critique about substantive issues. What is the purpose of just posting a critique about “uh” or saying PWND and “ganked” noobs? In some ways, I find the people in here writing much inferior thoughts than I can find on a random persons facebook wall.

One final thing Narutoboy, you are advertising your site by posting on here. On your site you posted this:

“This is a community. Having quality discussion will help establish P8I and set us apart from other gaming/tech forums.”

Why on earth would you apply that rule to your site, yet post without regard to quality here?

As promised, a real treasure trove from Max Blumenthal, titled appropriately enough Obama the Fallen Messiah, at Huffington with all kinds of Messiah/God quotes including one from OBAMA HIMSELF:

    Obama, the Fallen Messiah

The Obama phenomenon is impossible to analyze or understand without considering the deep levels of anxiety and desperation that progressives suffered during the radical presidency of George W. Bush. When the Democratic primary began, some progressives seemed to embrace a secular version of the Christian right’s salvation fantasy. They ached for a secular messiah to descend from the political heavens, reverse Bush’s disastrous legacy and save the country from itself. A mere politician, even with solid progressive credentials, would have been unacceptable to them.

Many progressives believed they had discovered their savior in Barack Obama, a gifted orator and writer who proclaimed in his book, The Audacity of Hope, “I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.” As Obama’s primary battle against Hillary Clinton intensified, his rhetoric and the language of his supporters grew increasingly messianic. At a rally in South Carolina, Oprah Winfrey referred to Obama as “The One,” a fusion of Jesus and Neo from The Matrix. Then, when Obama defeated Clinton in Iowa, he quoted from a Hopi Indian End Times prophecy that had become popular among New Agers: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” Moved to the point of ecstasy by Obama’s victory speech, Ezra Klein declared the candidate, “not the Word made flesh, but the triumph of the word over flesh… Obama is, at his best, able to call us back to our higher selves.”

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ marcus.lewis

Your defense of his poor speaking ability isn’t very well thought out. There were other people at the table and I didn’t hear the stuttering and poor speech that I heard from him when it was their time to speak. Ryan Paul, for example, spoke smoothly and was very easy to understand. All I’m saying is, stop lowering the bar and calling a terrible speaker a great orator.

  • gk33435

I miss dubya’s articulation. Especially 7 hours worth! Now THERE was someone who could’ve handled a long meeting like that! Real presidential stuff!

  • Grammie

Actually, it’s at least possible that GWB might have excelled in the same type setting for a meeting about terrorism and ways to deal with it.

For all his malapropisms he was generally very relaxed and sure of his beliefs with no hedging. Contrast that to BHO and his all things to all groups re the public option.

We’ll never know but then he is not the President anymore and it is what BHO does that counts.

HAhahaHAHAHAHahahAHAHAHAhahaHAHA!!!!!11 The Obamessiah talks like this, “Uh, duh duh duh, uh uh uh, duuuhhh!!!!1″ (HINT: It’s because he doesn’t have a TELEPROMPTER!!!) HAhahahaHAHA!!1 Also, the DEMO-RATS’ bill is REALLY BIG!!!!!!!!!11

  • the real john t

OH good, now I get to play Dollar’s little word game he likes to play. “He’s SORT of God” do you see the word “sort”? Does that mean people are calling him A God? And for your other long ass rant, that is nothing but someone stating his opinion of what he thinks the Democrats are saying.

Nice try Grammie, but you’ll need to do better than that.

  • marcus.lewis

Narutoboy: An oration by definition is a public speech; this was not public speech. This was essentially a policy meeting that featured policy discussions. I thought Ryan Paul was sharp, although; however, he had a prepared statement. Those are much easier to do, and that’s what all the bankers and CEO’s did when called to testify in congress. Engaging in a policy discussion and following up statistical information takes a lot more intellectual rigor than reciting a statement that a person had over a week to prepare. I would certainly think you would be able to differentiate between reading a prepared statement and engaging in discussions.

  • Grammie

Folks, let me introduce you to The Really Real John T.

I know this b/c this is the level of discourse I am so familiar with from him.

No, dear, that is Blumenthal QUOTING prominent Dems.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @marcus.lewis

Fine; speaking in general, then. Ever watch Newt Gingrich speak, off the cuff, on Fox News? If not, search for a segment of him on Youtube. Now, compare that to any video of an Obama interview. BIG DIFFERENCE. Newt speaks clearly, with little to no stutters or pauses. Obama says “uh” every other word. So, let’s stop kidding ourselves about Obama’s speaking abilities, or lack thereof.

I’m listening to a focus group being done by Frank Luntz and those people in the group speak better than Obama. Hilarious.

  • Azarkhan

    From the Times in London:

“Of course, by the usual standards of C-Span programming — which can induce sleep faster than an IV drip of propofol — the summit was the equivalent of a bikini mud wrestling contest. You half expected the picture to shake as the camera operator struggled to compose himself.

For the rest of us, however, it was mainly an opportunity to see how many conciliatory-looking poses Obama could strike while listening to his Republican opponents explain why the entire first year of his administration has been a gigantic waste of time, and why the telephone directory-sized health Bills produced by both the Democrat-controlled House and Senate should be fed into a shredder the size of Connecticut, before they . . . well, no one seems to know exactly what these vast pieces of legislation would do.

Except that it won’t be good, because the US Congress generally only does expensive and complicated.”

Oh, did I offend you in any way? Why did you have to go on the attack? Is it because you’re not in the comfort zone of Dollar’s delete button? I don’t think my “level of discourse” was any different than anyone else’s on here.

  • marcus.lewis

I have heard Newt Gingrich speak, and I think he does a good job. I have heard the same verbal snafus from Gingrich as everyone else who speaks in Q&As. People stutter and use verbal delays to formulate thought. It is what people do. Speaking on the news you have a set of policy points that are already formulated and just ready to be recited. I googled Newts Q&As and other events where its not broken into policy points but actual discussions, and its the same thing. These politicians are meticulous, that’s why there are position papers handed out to all the members on both sides and they can recite them eloquently. Formulating original thoughts a tad bit harder especially in hour long discussions.

Like Newt doesn’t know what they’re going to be talking about on Fox and can have his talking points ready. I can’t believe you even made that comparison

Which of you out there believe Pat Buchanan IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE?

    @marcus.lewis

You are exactly right. I’ve never seen a politician that didn’t stutter or uh when they aren’t talking from a written speech. And for these people that gripe about Obama’s use of a teleprompter. Do they actually think other Presidents didn’t use them.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @marcus.lewsis

People stutter and pause, yes. But unlike Obama, most people don’t do it after every other word. Your defenses of him are pathetic! And Newt ALWAYS speaks better than Obama, off the cuff and during speeches. ALWAYS. He is just naturally a better speaker.

Go watch the MSNBC video where Newt was interviewed immediately after the Sarah Palin acceptance speech. He didn’t have any talking points prepared and he STILL bested Obama in speaking capability. Obama is a stuttering joke, get over it.

    This is a good one.

    ROFLMAO!

“Go watch Newt after the Sarah Palin acceptance speech”

Given that I pointed out that you had mistaken quotes for Blumenthal’s opinion you could have not responded or admitted that you misread it. Not The Really Real John T. Nope, you predictably go into a harangue on J$ etc. and totally skip commenting on the the mistake you made. What does J$ have to do with your reading skills, or lack thereof?

But earlier, in your charming foot stamping so there gotcha way you proved my contention about your discourse beyond doubt with your absurd contention that Evan Thomas ONLY said BHO is “sort” of God. We’re not still in grade school if you haven’t noticed.

  • the real john t

Now Newt, there’s someone to really be proud. Yes, he’s got such a find record when it comes to morals. Hey Narutoboy, do you know why Newt had to resign from the House?

  • MrGlennBovineKoldys

-We’re not still in grade school if you haven’t noticed.=

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ real john t

Ooooh, a diversion. I didn’t expect that from a liberal. When did we start discussing morals? So who are you “proud of”? Ted ‘I left a woman to die’ Kennedy? The admitted liar, womanizer, and accused rapist Bill Clinton?

  • the real john t

    @Narutoboy

Ted Kennedy is not alive anymore and maybe planning on running for President like Newt is.

  • MrGlennBovineKoldys

Tell us again who started bitching about President Obama’s speaking traits, and how his pauses some how diminish the message he delivers.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ real john t

I know he’s not, but he had a very long political career after the death he caused. You didn’t answer the question – who are you proud of? And who was talking about the presidency? You brought up Newt and said, sarcastically, he was someone to be proud of; now you’re talking about his presidential ambitions. Figure out what you want to discuss, then come back, because right now, you’re all over the place.

  • the real john t

    @Narutoboy

I’m the one that brought up Newt? Did you have a memory lapse? You’re the one that brought him up. And Ted Kennedy has done more for the people in this country than Newt will ever do.

  • http://p8i.com/ Narutoboy

    @ real john t

I meant that you brought him up in the context of morals. I realize that I was the one who brought him into the discussion – about speaking ability. Yes, sure he has. He was kind and caring enough to drive Mary to wherever they were going; he just forgot the not driving into a lake and leaving her there to die part.

  • writer

I’m reminded of the old joke. What do you get if you cross Jacques Cousteau with A.J. Foyt? Ted Kennedy.

  • TfT

Well, the general concensus among MSM is that the whole event was a “draw”. That’s good for republicans, bad for WH and democrats. The only exception is CBS:

Chip and Katie claim the summit proved that the Republicans are the party of “NO”.

    HAHA

Poor Katie, she really needs to get over herself and start reporting objectively. She is turning into the laughingstock of MSM with her inability to see anything except her leftwing viewpoint. Poor thing.
