Senate Successful In Breaking Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Filibuster (Updated)

Senator Joseph Lieberman promised movement in the Senate on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he delivered a filibuster-proof majority vote of 63-33 on the procedural issue to advance the bill. The ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in uniform is now one step closer to being repealed.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid withdrew the government spending bill on Thursday in order to enable the Senate to focus on getting other important business done before the end of this session. The tradeoff seems to have worked on at least one front, as ending the ban on gays in the military now seems likely to occur, and possibly by the end of today.

Update: Senate scheduled to vote on full repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell at 3pm EST

    I’ll be glad when DADT is repealed and we can get it over with. As a gay person myself I’m sick of it being an issue. I’m tired of hearing about it. Oh and of course it’s wrong, even a child knows it’s wrong.

    Homophobic much? And if you don’t think our troops are professional enough to do their jobs just because there’s gay people around, well I think that’s a huge slap in the face to our troops. People do their jobs every day with all different kinds of people around and I think that line that the military won’t be able to handle it is both ignorant and insulting to the intelligence of anything with half a brain.

    No, they don’t. They didn’t have the right to serve as themselves in the military. They had to hide it like a Jew in WW2 Germany. We’ve granted them the same rights as all other citizens; to openly defend their country free from persecution. And yes, DADT is persecution.

    You seem to not have much confidence in our military if you think it is going to be hurt by allowing gays to openly serve, where they’ve already been serving, just openly. As you said, they are the greatest fighting force in the world, have a little more faith that they will be tolerant and not homophobic.

    If we entrust these folks with the ability to make life or death situations for themselves, those around them, and those on the other side of the battlefield… how can we not trust them to act professionally, respectful, and with some sort of tolerance for their fellow soldiers? DADT should be considered a “good idea” for our soldiers, but not a rule, law, or reason to remove someone from force.

    These men and women fight for America, and one of our strongest principles is that we are all free to be who we are, and discrimination is not to be accepted. With that in mind, those who refuse to fight alongside someone of another race, religion, or sexual orientation don’t understand what makes America great, don’t deserve the honor of being one of America’s heroes.

    As someone right-of-center, I don’t want the government telling me who I can or can’t have a relationship with, or preventing someone from serving their country based solely on who they love. There is a difference between homosexuality, and polygamy and bestiality, and I don’t buy the argument that “if you allow one, you allow the other.”

    My only fear is that some knucklehead will start calling his buddy a name (not to insult, just to tease), and someone else will start filing lawsuits and demanding retribution. Our army has enough to worry about, we don’t need them worrying that saying something stupid in the middle of a firefight, will get them kicked out or removed from duty. But I believe our Military can take care of instituting policies that prevent that from happening.

    All that said, to the lefties who are jumping up and down and giving the finger to those who support DADT… grow up. It’s that kind of attitude that prevents people from changing their minds… that kind of, “them or us” mentality. This is good for all Americans, quit trying to make everything a “we beat you,” victory… and just be happy that something positive is finally getting done. Grow up.

    Justice has prevailed! The issue has been resolved and not the court cases are moot. I would have preferred to the the Supreme Court rule that the policy was unconstitutional but the victory over ignorance and bigotry is still sweet.

    That was in the Old Testament. Jesus never addressed the issue. That was under the old covenant which also said adulterers should be stoned to death. When presented with the death penalty in a case of adultery Jesus rejected it. It amazes me that so called Christians support the death penalty. They are not being like Jesus.

    Paul lists homosexuality among a group of sins in his letter to the Corinthians 6:9 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,” But Paul is also quoted as saying in 1 Corinthians 14:34 “women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.” I would not take Paul literally. He was a harsh man. No civilized Christian today would agree with Paul that women should be silent in church. Times change and humans evolve as does our understanding.

    There are a lot of nasty things in the old testament. The new has a lot fewer but the book of Revelations, there are some brutal punishments there.

    As a Vet (16 years and medically retired), I am pleased. I’d like to see Art 125 removed, but barring that this will have to do.

    The service won’t suffer. There were homosexuals in the service when I was in, there were homosexuals when before I was in. There have always been homosexuals. Now they won’t have to hide themselves. The witch hunts will end. The ability of an FIS to blackmail them for secrets will end.

    It’s a happy day. The bigots, the ignorant and the foolish will bleat, but if Israel, Sweden, England, Canada, Germany, France, the French Foreign Legion and I know not who all else can manage it, so can we.
