Obama Counts Down Everyone More Powerful Than Him On SNL

video

Fred Armisen’s President Obama impression got hauled out this evening to kick off the episode, and…it was kind of different? Armisen’s past Obama sketches have never really been award-winning, but it seemed as though he usually made an effort to mimic the president’s deep voice and (sometimes ponderous) slow delivery. This time, Armisen seemed to be playing “some dude in the Oval Office” rather than the sitting president.

That choice may have been intentional, given that the sketch skewered Obama for being an ineffectual leader whose tenure in office has barely made an impression. He counted down the list of people in the United States more powerful than him at the moment — they included Grover Norquist, all of Congress, Pixar and Tyler Perry. He noted that he still has more power than all the Republican presidential candidates, and everyone watching took a moment to sigh with relief that this wasn’t another presidential debate sketch. Though the writing was incisive, Armisen’s weird Everyman persona and the depressing fact of our government’s total inability to accomplish anything set an odd tone for the episode. Here’s hoping things liven up when Steve Buscemi shows up!

Did Spongebob Squarepants make the list?

  • Anonymous

No, none of the republican candidates made the list.  If that was the category, I’m sure Sponge Bob would have been #2 after the leader, a shoe.

No big mystery. All I needed to read of this article was the lead to know that it was an SNL sketch critical of Obama. Whenever they get around to doing a critical sketch of our dear leader, Armisen deliberately tanks it.

It’s just not funny.  This guy has been president for almost three years, and SNL has yet to make a single joke that comes at Obama’s expense.  It’s not even a very good impersonation.

The President of the United States is still the most important person of the world.  Obama just happens to be an ineffective tool that no one pays any attention to him anymore.  Bill Clinton was president for 6 years while Newt Gringrich was Speaker of the House.  Did Clinton have any problems getting things done?  Nope.  In fact, Clinton’s most important and enduring legislative efforts almost all came after Gingrich took the House.  Clinton knew what triangulation meant, Obama  can’t even spell it.

Sarah missed the boat on this skit; it was topical, especially off the Big Ed rant over being dissed by GQ – note that Obama did NOT complain about that, thus the premise of this sketch. And it was mostly accurate, in term of at least MOST of those higher up on the list than the presidency.

That, by the way, is all consistent with how our constitution works. Congress is first – Norquist and Oprah fight it out for 3rd. Article 29, I believe- per the list of Fuppet News “fake constitution articles”.It’s also MOST untrue that Fred has failed to come up with a definitive Obama on SNL. Remember “I Keep It Cool”? That was so good, so bang on, it got written up in academic journals.

Anyway Sarah, I think your entire review is completely idiotic and misses every mark. Nothing personal – I’m not saying YOU stink, I’m saying this review you wrote stinks. And it does; it just reeks.

I’d say his impression is as unsure and forgettable as the President. All in all , spot on .

“…the sketch skewered Obama for being an ineffectual leader whose tenure in office has barely made an impression…”

That line points out the laughable dissonance of the screechy, over-caffeinated right wingers who post here daily. In their little brains, Obama is either a lazy guy who’s accomplished absolutely nothing or else he’s the Kenyan-born puppet master who’s turned the US into a commie cesspool.

It just goes to show how utterly clueless most of his opponents are.

Another death at another Occupy protest. This time in Denton Texas. To be ignored by the media and by Mediaite as it doesn’t fit their warm fuzzy OWS narrative. No time for that but plenty of time for bland tv like SNL.

    OWS = epic fail

  • Anonymous

Sometimes, he’s both extremes in the same post.

  • Rex derWunderGott

Isn’t Denton where Ike was from originally, or nearby? The Texas panhandle sure has come up with a lot of American originals.

This constant effort to frame and thereby somehow make Occupy disappear is both telling and pathetic. One of the most recurrent memes the right has struck on is “Occupy deaths”, as if no one dies anywhere away from Occupy events. The thing is, I have yet to see a single article or student even SUGGESTING that the rate of crime, rape included, and the death rate, from crime or otherwise, is actually higher than in population as a whole WITHOUT Occupy.

Occupy is now what- just around 10 weeks old; not that long. It’s had an absolutely indisputable impact on American society in particular, and so there’s no real surprise that so-called “conservatives” attack it – they are ALWAYS frightened of change and new things.

I feel sad for you ‘unmutual’, sad for your frightened tiny brain, for your fear for your tiny pathetic ambitions which despite their tiny pathetic size you will never achieve. How close to your pillow tonight and beg hard to your imaginary guard and your life should go by a little faster and maybe not touch you so much.

I feel like there should be a puppy farm or a kennel somewhere for broken down fearful types like ‘unmutual’.

  • Joke Scareborough

Armison, here’s some advice from someone who is funnier than you are (which isn’t saying much).
Okay here goes, do these things and your crappy Obama impersonation(?) becomes a tad funnier.
Turn your head back and forth while you’re talking as if you’re watching a tennis match; between sentences say either “but, but, but” or “aaaAAAaannnnd”; every once in a while raise your chin up real high like you think you’re hot sh*t.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_45S32GWGDRUJIL6E2U4HOZW4BM Bob

SNL really needs to find a better Obama. Armisen can do great work (his Bloomberg is awesome), but this impression is so mediocre.

This is just bad television. You can find people on youtube that do a better Obama. He is not even close and it’s beyond not funny.

“commie cesspool is redundant … btw”

No, there’s a difference to anyone who has any sort of education. One is a noun while the other is an adjective.

(BTW, I’ll let you try to figure out which is which. It shouldn’t be too hard; you’ve got a 50-50 chance of getting it right.)

Careful Armison… he still got his unmanned drones

I hate both the right and the left, but this is giving Obama more credit than he deserves. His own party doesn’t respect him. I remember Jimmy Carter, who had more clout than this clown. What a freakin waste of a presidency. Whether you agree with his ideology is irrlevant, if you only knew what the hell he actually stood for maybe you could at least respect him. He is the equivalent of Romney on the right.

    Did anyone get the joke?

Denton’s not in the Texas Panhandle, hon.  It’s a good percentage of a huge state away.  LOL

    Hoot mon!
This Obama spends all the money.
    We can nae afford him.

Several jokes have been at his expense on this show.

  • Anonymous

The skit actually is “skewering” the crazy way our country is going by putting importance on idiotic things, a congress that can’t do anything, Grover Norquist who is a nothing with influence over the idiotic Republicans who sign his pledge and so on, I think instead of claiming  this is anti Obama, everyone should be wondering what has happened to us.  If you think it is against Obama, so be it, but that’s the problem.

  • Anonymous

just your post reflects the need for a better educational system in the USA.

  • Anonymous

again, a call for better education in this post, or maybe reform schools should reopen.

Lady Gaga is more powerful than Barry.

  • Anonymous

Ridiculous. I never said that there weren’t valid criticisms of Obama, did I?

My point (which you obscured) is that that most of the Obama haters make two completely contradictory complaints about Obama. And as Mezzovox rightly points out, sometimes they level both complaints in the same post!

Grover Norquist should have been #1… since the Republican Party bows down to him like a God!!

And you libs did the exact same thing to Bush.  He was the dumbest person alive, but also an evil genius.

Worst impersonation ever. Sounds absolutely NOTHING like POTUS.

He never said that Bush was “ineffectual.” To the contrary, I always believed this his policy initiatives were doing harm to the country, and I believe my instincts have been proven right many times over.

Can you name a single skit that was a biting and sarcastic about either Obama the man, or Obama’s policies as the one on Cain in this very same episode?

And, there’s PLENTY of material to choose from:  Solyndra, the Economy, Fast & Furious.  Obama’s administration gives $500M to a big-time donor company and that company files chapter 11 in the exact same month that career bureaucrats that reviewed the application said it would – and against the advice of those bureaucrats you still give the taxpayer money to the donor company – and there’s NOTHING to mock or ridicule about that?

I also think it’s fascinating to do this sketch on Cain while they ignored – entirely – the Anthony Weiner affair.

  • Anonymous

So we’re at there were skits,… just not as biting as you wish! Since they have tagged Obama many times, we’ll just go with that’s,… your opinion. I don’t remember Solyndra, but, but the rest,…”yeah” they have! They have bathed him in their news skits, state of the union mocks, debit ratings pleas, “tea” debates tagging him for hate and how many times have we seen him as the first skit? Often!

Don’t want to get into Fred Armiston’s Obama impression. Neither do I desire to get into quarrel with other commentators here.   Here’s my perspective.   Pres. Barack Obama was listed in CNN’s poll as one of the top 100 least influential people in the US.  Its on their Marquee blog.   They wrote he’s as influential as a substitute high school teacher.  Ouch!!!

  • Scott Carroll

No conspiracy. Armisen’s either an incompetent comedian or he’s tanking the sketch. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone with more than a couple of functioning brain cells can see this “sketch” for exactly what it is and those that can’t are the weak minded target audience who will laugh at it and must be reassured and “programed” for acceptance of Obama’s total failure as a president, be given reasons why NOTHING is his fault and why he must be voted for again in spite of his TOTAL FAILURE. The theme for it is that poor barry was given a very bad situation and even though he has managed to make it MUCH worse instead of better, it isn’t his fault! After all he has no real power! He is only the president right?! And all those “evil repubwikins”, Oprah and even Tyler Perry have more say than he does and have stood in his way! Amazing, a pitch for re-election based on how completely powerless, gutless and ineffectual he is! Are YOU stupid enough to just laugh and buy that snake oil?

  • Anonymous

Gee you ALMOST have a break through moment and hit on the real truth of the matter! You say Clinton’s most important legislation almost ALL came after Newt and the republicans took the house! Yes, he was a total flop until then, when the liberals ran EVERYTHING (remind you a little of the last three years?)! Your next logical step away from the liberal fan club would be to wonder “Could it actually be that Clinton was drug kicking and screaming to those legislative successes and wasn’t actually driving the car”?!

Clinton got things done because he decimated welfare and took care of the rich.POTUS is nothing more than a cheerleader,he has the bully pulpit and veto power. If Obama told congress lets do away with social security, welfare, minimum wage,EPA,corporate taxes, any tax for the rich, unions, and allowed drilling for oil and fracking for gas everywhere, republicans and blue dog dems would give him the thumbs up.Things would be getting done, but it would not be beneficial to the working class or the planet. We the people who did not vote let the the nutbag teabagers take over the house the result is a do nothing congress.Idiologies must overlap in order to have meaningful legislation.Stop using the potus as a scapegoat. We the people need to purge the congress of right wing nutbags and blue dog democrats ASAP!
