So It Continues…MSNBC Guest Says He Doesn’t Know If ‘Obama Is A Christian’

Video

Yes, apparently we’re still talking about this. On Wednesday afternoon, MSNBC’s Martin Bashir spoke with Dr. Craig Mitchell, an associate professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, about President Obama’s commitment to Christianity.

Bashir asked Mitchell to react to the “endless attempts to imply that the President of the United States is somehow sub-Christian, not a Christian.” Mitchell responded:

Realistically, you look at any president in U.S. history, this guy is not the first person who’s been president who’s had that charge leveled against him. He’s no different from anyone else as far as that’s concerned. But you know, people do have their concerns and it’s not wrong for them to express those ideas.

Asked to specify which presidents faced “that charge,” Mitchell gave no names. Bashir pressed him on it, and after a short back-and-forth, Mitchell evaded specifics and brought the conversation back to Obama. Bashir plainly asked, “Sir, do you believe he’s a Christian?”

Mitchell replied:

What I know is that he says he’s a Christian. I have to take him at his word. [...] I don’t know if he’s a Christian or not.

So far, all we can agree on is that the president says he’s a Christian.

Strange Bush never had to prove he was a Christian.

Wonder why Obama does, probably race right liberals.

    INSERT CHRISTIAN BIGOTRY BELOW:

ps I’m still waiting for coverage on obama’s fuel crisis.

Oh Good Lord. Everybody just say ” I’m a devil worshipper, next question.”

Unacceptable religion for a liberal: Satan is against America.

Acceptable religion for a liberal: “God damn America”.

  • Anonymous

why does the liberal media have to try and prove the president is a christian? well really why does the liberal media need someone else to validate it?

Watching the Republican Party self destruct before our very eyes, is the best late Christmas present ever.

  • Anonymous

Martin Bashir was masterful in his take-down of this loon.  Dr. Mitchell eventually said he’d have to talk to Obama himself to determine if he’s a Christian.  Note to all American Christians, if you haven’t talked to this guy yet you may not check Christian as your religious affiliation.  Oh, and don’t try getting on Christian Singles.com either.

  • Mo Fokker

The word Christian is just a label that people ascribe to themselves for varying purposes.

  • http://gregingleright.weebly.com/ Greg

Very uncomfortable stuff. The exposure is important but disgusting.

Thank you Republican Party for allowing “religions” nutjobs to hijack your party and destroy it from within. Obama isn’t even gonna have to lay a glove on the nominee, they did a great job themselves.

You people are just plain stupid, aren’t you? It is no wonder you are out of office. Who in their right mind would elect a candidate to office if they had you as a constituent?

When Obama talked about his collective salvation, which is not biblical, so yes that questions his Christianity. He can say he’s Christian all he wants, but his view on salvation really questions it because if you believe in Christ, you should understand salvation, no where in the bible does Jesus talk about collective salvation.

  • Anonymous

So you are admitting that you want the government to intervene in the free market? Thanks I guess.

  • Anonymous

Why is MSNBC so obsessed with Obama’s religion????

This is why I watch Fox News. They actually discuss important issues like job creation, gas prices, the national debt, etc.

  • Anonymous

What would be the big deal if he wasn’t Christian? When you go to the dentist, or need an electrician, do you concern yourself with their beliefs? This is asinine.

  • Anonymous

Bashir is a sanctimonious POS who’s every question was peppered with arrogance, like only he himself knows the truth. The ONLY person who can answer whether or not Obama is a Christian is Obama himself. I think the pastor’s first answer is the right one: We have to take Obama at his word.

Bashir’s head is so far up Obama’s ass he might as well be giving the president a colonoscopy.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SMUGSPLRKQOJBS5T6I4S5H2YSE Andy-48

Mr. Mitchell….I’m not sure that you are black or a Doctor…Or that you yourself are a Christian. I know that you say you are a Christian but that doesn’t mean that you are.

  • NeoKong

What an ass wipe Bashir is.   He tries to put words in Mitchell’s mouth about how other presidents have been accused of being a muslim when Mitchell never said that.  Mitchell corrects him and then Bashir just ignores him and makes the accusation again.
Then later on he fakes outrage because Mitchell will not endorse Obama as a christian as he throws in two cheap shots against Santorum and Gingrich as he bemoans how Obama is treated.

     Well played, Sir.

  • Anonymous

Most liberals hate religion anyway- so you’d think Bashir would be happy to say that Obama is above believing in mythology.

But of course, Bashir defends Obama because its all about winning elections. It will be the first and only time’s someone’s Christianity is defended by Bashir, I assure you.

I hope these Republicans are getting nowhere by questioning the president’s faith. While Republican candidates are trying to to appeal to fringies on the right. The president has already secured up the base & is now working on independent voters. The Republicans are just burying themselves with this rhetoric.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RD7VI4JIGOLEZWXOF5UU5PE3II Juliet Abanike

Omg! There’s no real way to know if someone is a Christian unless you know them! One good act does not make you a Christian. Saying you are a christian does not make one either. Christianity is in the heart and deeds. If you are a Christian it means you aspire to live your life like Jesus Christ the only Son of God and you believe in His teaching.

It’s not Christ like to believe that an unborn baby should be killed! It’s not Christ like to make decision over life and death! Only God can make that decision. The crux of this whole MSNBC pastor badgering by Martin Bashir (who btw doomed Micheal Jackson in his infamous documentary editing), is uncalled for. Who can forget Bashir calling Micheal Jackson a pedophile? Mr Judge and Jury. He judged Micheal’s intent. If you take President Obama by his words then how about him saying “change comes from the bottom up”? One of the first acts as President was to administer bail out money and continued to bail out the rich. As a US Senator from the State of Illinois he voted to bail out big corporations.  How about the shovel ready project? It turned out “the shovel ready projects were not as shovel ready like we projected” says President Obama. I can go on and on…

Truth is, you have no way of knowing someone is a christian unless you know them. Martin Bashir and MSNBC should stop carrying water for President Obama.

  • Anonymous

Sadly, I have to agree. But it’s for the party’s own good. It’s never going to get back to a healthy place till it simply self-destructs and has to rebuild from the ground up. It’s a lot like an addict who has to hit bottom before they can put their life back in order. First step is to admit the problem. A lot of conservatives (Frum, Buckley, Powell, Scarborough, to name but a few) have publicly identified the crisis, but of course, they’ve been denigrated as RINOs to try and drown out their unpleasant truth. It’s a tragedy in the making.

  • Anonymous

It’s not at all stupid actually but it does further prove the hypocrisy of those who themselves claim Christianity as their faith.

What this does is chase the non-Christian voters away. This is one of the main reasons that so many who would otherwise be Republicans are not. Because at some point, the “Christian Values/Christian Nation” thing starts. That causes everyone who is not a Christian to run away.

If the GOP could lay off the religion/social issue thing for one full presidential cycle, they could win, just on taxes alone. It worked well in 2010.

The Tea Party wisely stuck to economy, deficit and jobs. While I do not agree with a lot of the TP stuff, I respect that they were smart enough to know that social/religious issues cost votes. That lesson seems to have been forgotten.

Note that the media didn’t start this. Sore losers started this in 2008. It waxes and wanes and seems to have now come back full blast. Personally, I don’t care what anyone’s religion is and I am sick and tired of hearing about it.

I think they’re trying to appeal to their base for the nomination and if that means chase away independents away in the general so be it. Since we’re seeing ecomic recovery, the Republicans need to find a new platform completely, and we know how much they cling to Bibles & guns.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Crittenden/100000916171322 Eric Crittenden

“Obama attended Rev. Wright’s church for 20 Years!” one conservative angrily exclaims.
“And he’s a Muslim!” the other idiot agrees.

How conservatives are able to hold two diametrically opposed thoughts in their heads at the same time is truly amazing. (Obama is arrogant YET goes on an “Apology Tour”, a naive academic elitist AND a devious street thug, an ineffectual do-nothing leader AND a unstoppable tyrant, a Marxist Maoist Socialist AND Wall Street’s biggest donor recipient, wants to raise taxes on the top 1% to cut the deficit AND he doesn’t care anything about the deficit, etc…) Truly amazing.

Obama’s religious beliefs are no business of the Republicans!!

Though, they keep bringing it up to motivate their base, a base that over 40% still believe Obama is a Muslim, fully knowing that he spent 20 years attending a church in Chicago!!

The real question is why do the wingnuts not believe United Church of Christ is a Christian Church.

  • Anonymous

It’s been said for decades now that the GOP is no longer the same party that nominated Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt. In the last 10 to 15 years, it has moved even right of Reagan. The GOP base of today would not have elected Ike, Nixon or Ford, and there’s really not much different between the policies of John Huntsman (RINO, by Republican standards) and HW Bush. Reagan was seen as a far-right ideologue by many but even he understood that you have to compromise in politics. The House GOPers don’t understand this basic concept. They are purists, aka ideologues, aka zealots.

The right-wing media have decided that they value demagoguery (propaganda gets votes) over reason, and so the Republican’s best guys have been marginalized. That’s a losing position in the long run because many of the educated young people of today don’t agree with their social biases.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_35AUAS4525FVFYNPRKECNNW6GE Libturd Flagger

Obama is as Christian as Bin Laden

  • Hout Bosques

It’s got sort of an interesting history, that church. It was very much involved in the big post-Reformation Enlightenment controversy over whether the “God head” was trinitarian or unitarian in nature. Trinitarians, not just Catholics & but other now fundy groups derived from Protestant groups out of the Reformation, or English splinter groups after the Velvet Revolution, accused unitarians of not being “real” Christians. Add to that, this church in Chicago was for a while said to be associated with the so-called “Christian” (versus “Christianist”) movement under which Christ was treated more like Islam treats Christ, as another prophet but not part of the “God head”. The incentive to attact the United church sect derived in large part from its being so active in the Underground Railroad, moving runaway slaves into Canada for safety.

But that’s not what this little church when the Obamas joined it; that’s what it was like when Jeremiah Wright was signed up as it’s preacher: under 90 members, mostly old. He needed a device to reach into the community to promote his church, for which there were then 3 main models: the Southern black Baptist model, which wasn’t likely to work in urban midwest Chicago anyway & seemed to be dying along with the dying south; the Elijah Muhammed, Malcolm X ‘temple’ model that actually goes back to the turn of the century & through the Paul Robeson era, the one Louis Farrakand now pretty much heads up; & the new black liberation philosophy movement, which actually fit within this little church’s history. Anyway, Wright settled on the last, which I think any rational person in his position would do.

And it worked, mostly because it’s the most “American” of the available models”, the least open to be being attacked as “UnAmerican”, & with the richest historical connections, right back to John Brown before the Civil War; but also partly because Wright is a very hard-working, thoughtful, assiduous student of sociology, history & religions, & an interesting & disciplined writer with a strong academic bent. But then, the Obamas joined, Obama ran for president, & up arose those sound bites clipped from his sermons (which anyone could get simply by going to the publicly available archives of Wright’s sermons).

So it’s not ENTIRELY made out of whole cloth, because there are southern white fundy sects who have argued for a long time that unitarian sects aren’t “Christian” because to be truly “Christian” you have to be accept baby Jeebus as part of the God head (to fundys, apparently, the only really important part). But it’s all so Sunni-Shi’ia fruits and nuts crazy when faithies try to rationalize splits in their faithiness, and they do so love to excommunicate. Santorum is reviving memes right out of the pre-Enlightment era, when people resolved their religious disagreements by burning each other at the stake, turning them into human crispies: Snap, crackle, pop, mofo.

  • Hout Bosques

You’re just bizarre. You do know that, yes no?

Both Santorum and Obama  said marriage was between one man and one woman. Obama as worshiped, Santorum vilified. Why? cause no one thought Obama really meant what he said, and they know that Santorum does.

For the left wing, its important that Obama be a Christian. Then they can hide behind the “fact” that their man is a christian, while blasting anything legitimately Christian.  But if we look at his background, he doesn’t believe any of the traditional Christian doctrines – his version of Christianity is, by his own words, universal salvation. That conflicts with every rational Christian denomination except black liberation theology, perhaps explained by 20 years in Wright’s church.

Wright certainly isn’t a Christian. No reason to believe Obama is either.

Liberal reporters keep asking questions and then complain about the answers.  It isn’t this guy’s job to defend Obama’s pronouncement that he is a Christian.  Obama was at one time a Muslim.  That’s a fact.  So it’s a question of when he was converted to christianity.  Let’s quit pretending there is no ambiguity there.  For the record, I’m talking about it because the liberals brought it up again.

  • Anonymous

You’re nuts. Its not the GOP that keeps this pot boiling – its every leftist media personality with an audience. Judging from the bookstore list, the Church he attended was strong on Farrakhan’s version of Islam, Black Liberation theology, Marxism and almost ignored normal Christianity. Even if he attended a Christian church for 20 years (and he didn’t), so what?  Being in McDonalds 20 years doesn’t make you a Big Mac. Its what’s in the heart, and Obama doesn’t appear to have it.

And yes, the point has been made that he has never mentioned the plight of all the millions of Christians being slaug-htered by the Muslim rulers and holy men in many of the nations he has bowed to. His interest seems to not offend Islam rather than protect Christianity. You draw your own conclusions

Funny, the founders had to be recommended by their congregations to sign the declaration of Independence. More than half of them were ministers. And there is no law providing for freedom FROM religion – we have freedom OF religion.

There was scant thought in the writing of the constitution that there would be legislators who were not Christian – it would have been awful uncomfortable for them to be involved in the business of the legislature if they were not, for the sessions opened with prayer that went on for hours, until every legislator who wished to had said what he wanted to God in the company of the other legislators. Sometime hours.

You are sadly lacking in historical perspective.

Part of a plan by the lefties to keep bringing up the question to obscure the real failures of this dough-head in the Whitehouse? Breaking the law by cancelling the equity of retirement funds, etc in GM and giving the equity to the unions?  Pouring Billions of dollars into failing businesses that even the Bush admin said were too risky? Using the TARP money to bail out his union friends, and hence increase the coffers of the Democratic party. Almost doubling the national debt in 3 years? His buddies at GE paid NO taxes the last three years!

His base maybe. But the seniors who now have no pension, the workers who have no jobs, the drivers who cannot afford the 100% increase in gas, the young people who will have to pay off the trillions he’s squandered, the 35% of the population who are Catholic, and all their Evangelical friends,+ etc – they may be secured, but its not for Obama!

When Barack Obama took office in 2009, one of the first thing he had to deal with was the imminent bankruptcy of the big 3 automakers. The economy was dragging and unemployment was rising and President Obama acted to save auto industry in Detroit. The auto bailout is touted to this day as a success with all credit generally given to Barack Obama, but underneath the surface this deal doesn’t look very good at all. Barack Obama campaigned in 2008 and spent the better part of 2009 passing the Affordable Health Care Act. Known by its oppenents as Obamacare its purpose was to provide affordable health care for all Americans includint the uninsured and the uninsurable. The Economic Recovery act was also passed in 2009, a plan designed to spur job growth stimulate the economy. All three bills are frequently lauded as a success by President Obama and his supporters, but upon close inspection all  is not as it appears to be. Cut to 2012, unemployment is still high, the economy is still sluggish at best, and no one has actually received and affordable health care. Each of these bills can be argued on a point by point basis as anything from resounding successes to abject failures. My view is that these bills are 3 of the worst laws in the history of the United States and heres why. Beginning with the auto bailout. Without getting into too much detail, a large amount of caash was infused into these companies in order to keep them operating. GM received 51 billion in federal money in exchange for partial ownership of GM. Subsidies were passed for the now famous chevy Volt a next generation green car. Tax credits were handed out some as part of the economic recovery act(stimulus). As a result of this GM paid no income taxes in 2011 on their way to posting the record profits mentioned. As part of the stimulus bill money was spent on grants, loan guarantees and tax credits for green energy programs including solar, wind, and electric cars. General Electric was a main beneficiary of this money recieving billions of dollars for many projects, depending on your source the total amount approaches 100 billion dollars. Because of the green energy tax credits and subsidies for large wind and solar projects, GE posted an 18billion dollar profit. More subsidies were passed in 2012 including a 10,000 dollar tax credit on each Volt sold. What does that have to do with GE, I will show you, but first. Cut to the Soviet Union, the largest communist empire the world has ever seen with millions of workers constructing widgets full time. What is a widget you ask? Its nothing, a product no one wants or need but is produced to keep the people working, back to 2012 and the widget of the 21st century. The Chevy Volt. An insidious situation has been set up under the guise of economic recovery and creating jobs. Between GM and GE a profit of over 25 billion dollars was posted in 2012 and no income tax was paid by either company. Recently a new deal was announced, wherby GE agreed to buy a fleet of Volts from GM thus completing the trinity. Under these rules GM is being paid in tax dollars to produce Volts that GE, also using tax dollars buys. With the newest subsidy in place both of these companies, 2 of the largest corporations in the world make a profit on every single one. How can you make a profit buying a car you ask? Well you use other peoples money, and thus our widget. How can this be considered good economic policy? Well its not its very bad economic policy, under these rules GE can buy as many widgets as they possibly can as fast as GM can make them and recieve an unlimited amount of tax dollars without ever giving anything back. Just buy them and park them on a lot somewhere. Is this deliberate or is President Obama incompetant? My opinion is deliberate. On to Obamacare a hugely expensive entitlement program reviled by some, loved by others. The bill is reviled on the right as everything from unconstitutional, to wasteful beauracracy, to free handouts. It is all of these things. Obama is not incompetant he knows exactly what hes doing. These policies are designed to suck the life from our economy and they are doing there job well. If you can accept the terrifying premise that Obama wants the economy to crash everything makes peerfect sense. Both green energy and obamacare are designed as a way to destroy money. An infinite amount of tax dollars will be poured into all 3 programs.  America needs to wake up and see. An infinite cycle of taxpayer dollars is now setup between GM and GE, with nothing of value being created. Obamacare is going to suck money from every american most if not all will go to beauracracies and give aways, its is a bottomless hole where money goes to die whit nothing of value ever created, unless you count federal employees as a product. The Stimulus bill was over 700 billion dollars and was also designed to destroy money. We have all heard of Solyndra and the bad loan, what not everyone realizes is that Solyndra knew it was going bankrupt at the time of the loan and so did the department of energy. Another thing not everyone realizes is that grants were given out to other, healthy, companies to buy Solar Panels from Solyndra who took a loss on every one sold until the money ran out and they went bankrupt. Leaving the taxpayer at the end of a long list of creditors and likely to recover nothing. By my estimate we have now spentwell over a trillion dollars on suicidal programs designed to harm our financial well being.  It is impossible for me to believe that POTUS, with all the infromation available to him could possibly imagine that any of this would work. My opinion is that his green energy programs and healthcare packages are a front for a communist/socialist agenda and its terrifying. Wake up Comrades. The widget factories are in full production and we need to act now or face a crash like none we have ever seen before.

Ozark religion, like that of Appalachia, was predominantly Baptist and Methodist during periods of early settlement; it tends to the conservative or individualistic, with Anglicans, Assemblies of God, Baptists including Southern Baptists, Church of Christ and other Protestant Pentecostal denominations present, as well as Catholics.

I will assume that was typical Christian bigotry from the left again.

And why does Obumber’s press core (MSNBC ABC DEF and CNN) spend so much time trying to get everone tp agree he is one? You libs are sure challenged when it comes to thinking past the party line . . .

Bush wrecked the economy? Odumber has doubled the national debt all by himself. And only took three years to do it. His bailout to the union buddies cost more than the entire Iraq war and accomplished nothing. Except fill the Dems coffers with union money that came from the Stimulous . . .

Why would anyone care what you think? Its the Dems that keep raising the race card. And of course, the blacks voted for Obama – the last election was the most racial in history, an very well may have been the most corrupt. But hey, no matter – they got their guy in. And now they pay 4.00 a gal for gas, have no jobs, and live on food stamps.  Real democratic progress, to be sure. And their kids will be paying off his debt til THEY”RE 80.

The problem is that it wasn’t just blacks that believed his lies. Dumb chick who believed he was going to pay her mortgage, put gas in her car, and educate  her kids – all from his “stash”, with never a thought of whether it was even possible, such is his constituents . . .

If there was some type of test so you had to show you had a clue about what the election meant rather than just voting for who you were told to, few of his people would have been allowed to vote. But we still allow the dumbest people in America, black and white, to vote. And the rest who actually produce something, pay most of the taxes and contribute something useful to the economy get stuck with the bill for the idiots ignorant votes.

And many more do! They realize that they’ll be 80 and still spending 2/3 of thier income paying off the debts this clown and his happy faces have run up in only three years. You simple project your own angst to others, and its not reality.

     And Santorum has toasted who?

Its even simpler than that – he’s all of the above – a study in contrasts. And a master deceiver. With no conscience, he can agree with everybody, cause tomorrow he’ll agree with somebody else.

He ran on marriage for one man and one woman. But he refused to defend the Defense of |Marriage Act, which was a breach of his oath of office, just as an example. So no wonder he has everyone confused – he’s conflicted himself.

Notice whenever a Black or Hispanic Conservative expresses themselves, the intolerant Democrats immediately berate, ridicule and intimidate them.
    THAT is blatant RACISM!

Who do these Democrats – and their Media Matters stooges in the mainstreams – think they are to instruct ANY individual on what he or she should believe or how they should identify themselves!

Forget the orchestrated “racist” smear against the GOP, – what Democrats do in situations like this is the textbook definition of “RACIST”!

That’s because Bush wasn’t a member of some weird black theology anti-white church re- invented by James Cone that almost rises to the status of a cult since it changes with virtually each pastor. Can I just make up a church a say I’m a Christian while wearing a kkk hood?

The straw man had no brain.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RKLFFXBQV4Z3EL2WBZQ2CAPMC4 Jim

Because the wingnuts are in the church, not outside questioning its status. Suggesting anyone in that odious hate church is normal and those without not normal explains a lot about liberals.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RKLFFXBQV4Z3EL2WBZQ2CAPMC4 Jim

“Sound-bites.” You can’t stop Wright from uttering some hateful remark and saying his comments are cherry picked is nonsense.  Suggesting a guy is “thoughtful” who calls the Romans (Italians therefore) “garlic-noses” makes me shudder for what you think of as wisdom.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RKLFFXBQV4Z3EL2WBZQ2CAPMC4 Jim

Well allowing himself to be informally Christianized by being informally baptized at the age of 27 by a racist minister in a cult-like is extremely suggestive isn’t it? By the tenets of the Muslim religion Obama was born a Muslim and so is an apostate. This shouldn’t affect Obama’s own view of it but it is in force outside his own opinions on the matter.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RKLFFXBQV4Z3EL2WBZQ2CAPMC4 Jim

Funny cuz on some black culture websites they are encouraging black folks to go to black owned businesses and one writer challenged herself to only buy black for a period of months. If a white person did that it’d be KKK time for sure. Try and find that in a website with mainstream ads – it don’t exist. For that type of “post-racial” vision you have to go to the black press.

  • ORAXX

The truth be told, I don’t know if President Obama is a Christian either. It’s equally true that I don’t care what, if any, religion he subscribes to.  What I am sure of, is that every horror imaginable has been perpetrated in the name of religion and, the bloody, gory, history of Europe is, largely, the history of Christendom.  This history is something the American founding fathers understood very well when they, wisely, kept religion out of politics.

  • Anonymous

No, I’m summarizing what he said.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DJQECYTY4MCQKPHROSGH36FISQ Ernesto

To any Christian who follows the Bible , Obama cannot be one  because his beliefs are very contrary to scripture. Here are some all documented: Obama has mocked the Bible and specifically Jesus’ own words (do a search on Obama mocks the Bible on You Tube), has said in an interview with the Chicago Sun reporter that all paths lead to heaven and that Jesus was a “historical figure” which is code phrase for those who do not accept his divinity, promotes abortion and homosexuality and hates Israel and wanted church baseds groups to provide abortion and contraception services. No way is he a Christan so why be afraid to come out and say it if it is true?.
