Stephen Colbert Mocks Joy Behar And Whoopi Goldberg By Storming Off The Set Of The View

video

Colbert The ViewThis afternoon, American treasure Stephen Colbert poked fun at View co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg’s extreme reaction to Bill O’Reilly in the best possible way: by mock-storming off of their set.

Before his melodramatic exit, Colbert was chatting with the women of The View about his “Rally to Keep Fear Alive.” According to the comedian—who, as always, was appearing in character—there are plenty of things Americans should be terrified of, like bedbugs. “I’m terrified of them!” he admitted. “They’re everywhere: movie theaters… I hear they’re on the couch on The View.”

When Sherri Shepherd chided Colbert for that remark, he was ready with another quip: “Yeah. That’s why Whoopi and Joy jumped up the other day, to get away from the bedbugs, I think.”

A quick-thinking producer started to play the infamous clip of Behar and Goldberg walking out on a screen behind the couch as Colbert jovially accused Goldberg of being rude to O’Reilly. When Elisabeth Hasselbeck subsequently asked Colbert what he really thought about the walkout, he jested, “Well, because I’m on your show, I agree with Whoopi. I think there should be mosques everywhere. I think this would make a good mosque.”

Colbert went on to point out that O’Reilly had been talking about emotions rather than logic when he made the remarks that so offended Goldberg and Behar: “Bill was not talking about what the facts were, Bill was talking about what felt right. It feels wrong. That’s what my rally is about. It feels wrong.’”

Then, as soon as the hosts started to respond to his comment, Colbert saw his opening: “I am leaving right now!” he said, before stomping off (and, seconds later, returning to the couch). Video of the entire exchange is below.

I find these late night people odd. They have made a career in original material

With O’Reilly and Glenn Beck so successful…they resort to tying to imitate Beck and O’Reilly and they are doing a terrible job of it. Actually it is quite sad to see.

Wrong. Bill O in fact was ONLY talking about what the fact is. Everyone else is putting emotion into it.

I am proud to say that I have never watched the Colbert show. When did he become an “American treasure”?
I have watched clips that have been used on Fox. I am also very very proud to say I have never watched Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. Only clips. I don’t find any of these people interesting or funny.
The ratings of these people are very small and are geared to a specific demographic. Their comedy is geared to attacking conservatives and promoting a left-wing agenda. They are MSNBC type comedians. Grown ups and real Americans don’t watch.
They don’t match the people that watched Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, George Carlin and Martin & Lewis.

Why is Colbert referred to as an “American” treasure, when he’s Canadian?

A more telling representation of The View’s moral epiphany would be seeing any of them – or their guests! – walk off the set the next time BayWhore goes into one of her Anti-Christian Rants!!!!

Colbert BTW is from South Carolina and is fearless and funny as hell.He openly mocked GW Bush to his face, mocked Congress as an expert on immigration, made Laura Ingraham look like an idiot, went on Bill O’Reilly and made Billo look like the fool that he is,and he exposes Glenn Beck and the rest of Fox as fearmongers and phonies. You would think the act would get old but is does not.And rips liberals as well.Got his head shaved in Iraq by orders of President Obama in front of the troops in a designer army uniform. This guy is good.

    Faux Pas?

I must have confused Mr. Colbert’s actual background with one of his persona’s – perhaps the one that Democrats invited to “testify” on illegal immigration, thus making a mockery of the institution they were sworn to uphold.

I dont’ think all satire is supposed to be original. Satire pokes fun, and that’s what Colbert did. Stewart and Colbert are masters at satire. Rush Limbaugh should take some notes from these guys.

I’m proud to say I’m a loyal fan of Mr. Stewart and Mr. Beck and watch as much as I can.

Very small ratings? Mr. O’Reilly gets, what 2-3 million viewers per night on average? That’s what Stewart and Colbert get, on top of the audience that they get with reruns. If you call Stewart and Colbert’s audience small, you’d have to call Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Becks audiences very small as well. Yes, they satirize conservatives more than they do liberals, but they do go after fellow liberals as well. If you’d watched more than what you see on Fox News, you might have noticed that. I don’t see how they can be MSNBC type comedians when they go after MSNBC.

I’m also tired of the “real Americans” schtick. Please. Just because they disagree with you doesn’t make them any less American than you.

But you have redeemed yourself in mentioning Carlin (a flaming liberal, by the way), Milton Berle, and Bob Hope. Might I also throw in The Marx Brothers as well? By the way, guess who was influenced by Milton Berle, Bob Hope, George Carlin, et al? You guessed it, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

You confused his “persona’s” background with his actual background when they are the same?

The Dems made a mockery of Congress? Just about every member of Congress makes a mockery of Congress and that is not limited by party affiliation. There’s a reason why at the end there was laughter in that room at his comment about them working together for the best interests of the country.

The real mockery is people like you that can’t see past their own perceived indignations and those in Congress, and currently running for Congress who aren’t truly interested in the well-being of the nation but in their own personal gains.

If you’re going to say Islam is bad, then I’m going to have to say all religions are bad. We can’t let one religion control women and the other not, we have to be equal.

gordimbulbsham: I am proud to say that I have never watched Colbert, Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. I am ESPECIALLY proud of the fact that my ignorance doesn’t stop me from having an opinion of them!

The ratings of these people are geared to a specific demographic – THINKING PERSONS. Their comedy is geared to attacking conservatives and promoting a left-wing agenda – except when then take their frequent potshots at liberals. I’m just guessing, since I don’t watch. Nevertheless, I know this for a fact!

They are MSNBC type comedians – like the hilarious Joe Scarborough and the side-splitting Lawrence O’Donnell.

Grown ups and real Americans don’t watch – they’re too busy spending their last dime on gold and watching Glenn Blech-h-h-h in their backyard bunkers. They don’t match the people that watched Red Skelton, Bob Hope, George Bush, Milton Berle, George Carlin and Martin & Lewis – because a lot of those people are DEAD.

NORBUTT: “Why is Colbert referred to as an “American” treasure, when he’s Canadian?”

We traded him for some fatback and Canadian Club.

You still haven’t told us whether you’re paid per post or per word by the Republicants for your blatantly partisan posts.

Hugo D: Don’t bring up any helpful outside links, fella! We’re dealing with EMOTIONS not facts!

    “Anti-Christian Rants!!!!”

    “Jesus f#@!”

Who’s doing the anti-C ranting here, exactly?

Satire, by its nature, is referential to real events. persons and situations. Stewart and Colbert have handled it deftly – often to devastating effect. As noted in Hugo D’s linked article, they appeal to a younger demo than Fakes “News.” As aging Fox viewers shuffle off this mortal coil, the Stewarts and Colberts will only increase in popularity.

Complaints as to their partiality to the left are mistaken. Stewart, for instance, recently gave Keith Olbermann a pretty good searing. Olbermann replayed it on his own show! Stewart also poked fun at Arianna Huffington’s accent. He and Colbert seem to consider everyone “fair game.”

The rich, seemingly bottomless lode of right-wing hypocrisy is the real “gold” for these guys. As long as the John Boners among us keep putting a foot in their respective mouths, Jon and Stephen – or someone like them – will be around to help them push it in deeper.

I like Stewart and Colbert. Unlike Bill Maher, they don’t take their self so seriously. I guess that is why I don’t like Maher, or Whoopi Goldberg, or Joy Behar. They can be funny at times. But when they expect us to take them seriously, they lose me. These guys are boobs who could not run a small company, or hold down a job as a responsible professional. Why should we take their political views seriously? Because of their elevated consciousness that comes with being an artist? Get real. George Carlin actually inspired the cover for Jonah Goldberg’s book, “Liberal Fascism.” He was on Bill Maher’s show and the following discussion took place:

George Carlin: … and the poor have been systematically looted in this country. The rich have been made richer under this criminal, fascist president and his government. [Applause.] [Cheers.]
    Bill Maher: Okay, okay.
James Glassman: You know, George—George, I think you know—do you know what fascism is?
Carlin: Fascism, when it comes to America—
Glassman: Do you know what Nazis are?
Carlin: When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts. Smiley-smiley. Fascism—Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won it. Believe me, my friend.
Maher: And actually, fascism is when corporations become the government.
    Carlin: Yes.

Bill Maher, to the contrary, fascism is *not* when “when corcorporations become the government.” Ironically, however, George Carlin’s conclusion is right, though not his reasoning. If fascism does come to America, it will indeed take the form of “smiley-face fascism”—nice fascism. In fact, in many respects fascism not only is here, but has been here for nearly a century. For what we call liberalism—the refurbished edifice of American Progressivism—is in fact a descendant and manifestation of fascism. This doesn’t mean it’s the same as Nazism. Nor is it the twin of Italian Fascism. But progressivism was a sister movement of fascism, and today’s liberalism is the daughter of Progressivism. One could strain the comparison and say that today’s liberalism is the well-intentioned neice of European fascism. She is hardly identical to her uglier relations, but she nonetheless carries an embarrassing family resemblance that few will admit to recognizing.

20Years from now if we’re still here and the rightwing hasn’t totally destroyed this country through their stupidity, mendacity and not having minds to think for themselves, we’ll be playing clips of Stewart and Colbert in order to understand how we got through these troubling times. Stewart & Colbert are the antidote to the idiotic journalism practiced on 90% of television. For those of you who will only watch Fox, I say to you Fox is to the national mind and intellect what candy corn, marshmallows and high fructose corn syrup is to good health. Fox is mostly propaganda serving the interests of Rupert Murdoch and a small group of especially rapacious billionaires. It’s amazing that the people who such up to this stuff can’t see how utterly phoney it is. The only person I’ve ever seen on Fox asides from Homer Simpson who resembles a normal human being is Chris Wallace. But, basically, it’s very hard to watch anything on Fox. Yes, Stewart & Colbert are comedians but they have the ability to take apart current events in a very funny and insightful way. People who watch these two regularly are better informed than most of the rightwing commentators on this website. By the way, as I’ve been saying on this blog, it doesn’t look as if the Dems are in for a bloodbath. The polls are steady and a lot of factors indicate that the Teapublicans are losing some traction as people take a good look and discover that, as far as the real world goes, the rightwing doesn’t have any coherent ideas about how to get the economy mended and that many of their candidates are truly unbelievable and unqualified to held office. Also, the hatred you have for Obama is so far out of line that it borders on the psychotic, because his reputation is going to be much better than you think. In the real world, considering what he was handed, he’s done a fairly good job. Where do you think we’d be today if McCain/Palin had been elected.

Wow! There’s so much here to refute/debunk, but unlike much of the Democratic base, I have to get to work!

You should get it right. You mentioned Stewart’s reruns, what about O’Reilly’s? His first two runs get about 5 million viewers. Stewarts audience is made up of kids that don’t vote and ignorant libs. O’Reilly’s viewers are people that vote.
    There is no comparison.

The fact that you can remember the FEW times they take on the libs is really telling. You are so thin skinned those few examples stick in your craw.
I know what they do because as I said I have seen their clibs played on Fox and other news outlets. I have never watched any of those shows from the opening to the end.
When comparing ratings, do you even know how many people watched the shows I mentioned? Their audience was 10 times Stewart, Maher, Colbert and O’Reilly.
The KING of satire and sarcasm is Rush Limbaugh. Libs don’t get it because it is ALL aimed at how the libs report the news. Libs don’t think that is funny.

George Carlin actually inspired the cover for Jonah Goldberg’s book, “Liberal Fascism.” He was on Bill Maher’s show and the following discussion took place:

I’m familiar with the clip Calvin, that’s where I got my remark from George. Here it is in case you haven’t watched it in a while. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqdCvfe12nM

Carlin was speaking of George Bush, but also thought elections in general was a farce because the people with money controlled the country and elections were a joke just to make the general public feel like they were doing something. Personally, I’m not interested in a discussion about the definition of fascism. IMO it’s more an issue of justice, and what constitutes real progress in regard to the reality of our situation.
Calvin I appreciate your willingness to engage but let me make an observation and you can consider it or toss it out. I notice when you give me links to look at they are almost always decidedly right wing leaning. I assume you know what confirmation bias is. If all or most of our reading supports what we already believe the chances of really expanding our understanding is diminished. I belong to another site and in the years I belonged I learned that my own understanding was expanded when I engaged people who disagreed with me and I made an effort to consider the points they made and look up facts I wasn’t aware of. I find I come to a better conclusion when I look at both sides of an issue.
I’m still willing to do that and I hope you are as well, but I don’t have time to research lengthy articles that have a clear right leaning bias. I am willing to consider new facts that I didn’t know before.
Using buzz words to create some negative connotation doesn’t mean much to me, which is why the term fascist, or communist seems like empty scare tactics. We need to get beyond that and look at specific details.
If there are elements of fascism in our government it’s not limited to one party or the other. I’m concerned about politicians who work with large companies against the interests of average Americans and the fact that the press is not doing it’s job anymore of keeping us informed on things that actually matter in more than a superficial way. IMO liberals and conservatives, moderates and independents need to come together to change the way elections are done so we can try to get honest public servants in DC.

Carlin: When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts. Smiley-smiley. Fascism—Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won it. Believe me, my friend.

BTW there’s another saying I like

When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

George Bush had a lot of patriotic talk and spoke often of God and faith , all the while he gradually trampled on the principles of the constitution and sent American’s to die in an avoidable war. I’m not blaming everything on Bush because I think there ins plenty of corruption in both parties, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking one party is good and one is bad. We’re not kids.

here’s a few quotes from a brilliant propagandist

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”

and one about fascism from Teddy Roosevelt
“Fascism should rightly be called corporatism as it is a merger of state and corporate power–Benito Mussolini “Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.”
    –Theodore Roosevelt, April 19, 1906

Dan, you really should read Goldberg’s book. It is detailed and chalk-full of facts. Goldberg really knows what he’s talking about. In his book, he does not make a habit of calling liberals nazis. In fact, he must say fifty or a hundred times in the book that he’s not calling liberals nazis. Here’s one instance where says that he’s not calling liberals nazis. http://bit.ly/d7Qd3n

Dan, are you not guilty of the same thing? Don’t you post left wing leaning links from time to time? I’m more than willing to take a look at what other sources say, which is one of the reasons I come here. I am also willing to consider new facts that I didn’t know before. I try to see what the other side is saying when ever I can. I don’t trust a website implicitly because of its political leanings. If it’s the length of the articles, then I’ll try to avoid posting links to lengthy articles.

Ahhhhhhhh, yes he was and he was correct. Stop blaming America first and saying “we” deserved 9/11, libs!!

Now this is just ridiculous! When did Colbert EVER say 9/11 was “America’s fault?” Calm down, Homey the Clown! While it’s a fact that Muslims attacked us, it’s also a fact that men attacked us. All of the hijackers were Muslim, but they were also MEN. So maybe we should just ban all men from New York..? And if Christians keep saying God loves dead soldiers at service-people’s funerals, we should ban all Christians from cemeteries. And since it’s a clown who makes all our children obese, we should ban all clowns… I don’t suspect, being a clown yourself, you’d support THAT, now, would you?

I am proud to say that I have never watched the Colbert show. When did he become an “American treasure”?
I have watched clips that have been used on Fox. I am also very very proud to say I have never watched Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. Only clips. I don’t find any of these people interesting or funny.
The ratings of these people are very small and are geared to a specific demographic. Their comedy is geared to attacking conservatives and promoting a left-wing agenda.

Bottom line: people who watch Stewart and Colbert have no interest in fear-mongering pundits. If you like to be regularly frightened and/or angered by TV, Fox is a good place for you.
