‘I Know You’re Scared to Say Black’: Sanders Confronted at Black America Forum

bernie sandersBernie Sanders appeared at a Black America Community Forum in Minneapolis yesterday to talk about minority issues like criminal justice reform. One issue that forum panelists were particularly passionate about was a garbage incinerator in Minnesota causing health problems for people nearby.

At one point, local entrepreneur Felicia Perry brought up how her son has been suffering as a result and said, “My black son––I know you’re scared to say black, I know you’re scared to say reparations…”

Sanders jumped in to say that characterization isn’t fair. Perry said she wanted to hear Sanders specifically talk about black people, reparations, and all these important issues instead of speaking more broadly about the economy.

Sanders argued that it’s not just black people suffering, it’s Latinos and, in some poor rural areas, white people too. He added, “I’ve said black 50 times. That’s the 51st time. But this is a national issue.”
