Jeff Flake Reacts to Trump’s Claim EU ‘Possibly as Bad’ as China on Trade: ‘This is So Wrong, Mr. President’
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) called out President Donald Trump for a claim he made about the European Union trade policies during a Sunday morning interview on Fox News.
Speaking to host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures, Trump said this when asked if he’d consider working with U.S. allies to combat China’s trade policies: “The European Union is possibly as bad as China, just smaller. It’s terrible what they do to us.”
The president continued on, according to The Hill, “I love those countries, Germany, and all of the countries. Scotland. … But they treat us very badly. They treat us very unfairly.”
In response, Flake stressed that the United States needs its allies.
“This is so wrong, Mr. President,” Flake tweeted out along with a link to The Hill’s article. “When we confront China on unfair trade practices, we need our allies, especially those in the EU, with us, not against us.”
Trump’s views on tariffs have been a sore subject, even among fellow Republicans who have criticized Trump’s imposition of steep tariffs against U.S. allies.
Trump, however, has repeatedly defended his position, criticizing the European Union, Canada, and China on trade both during the Fox interview and at a recent rally in South Carolina, where Trump went as far as to declare the United States the “piggybank” other nations like to take from.
