Obama Cites Very Specific Reason He Refuses to Speak at Malia’s High School Graduation

Malia Obama will soon be graduating from high school, and as the daughter of the president, you might think that Barack Obama would have been asked to give a speech in order to mark the occasion. The president is known for getting weepy when talking about things that are truly meaningful to him, and the reason why he said no to Sidwell Friends School was because he knows the floodgates will open.

During a luncheon at the Jolly Pumpkin Brewery in Detroit, Obama was overheard at the table saying “Malia’s school asked if I wanted to speak at commencement and I said no.”

As for what he’d be doing instead, Obama said his entire plan at the event was to make sure he doesn’t completely lose his composure.

“I’m going to be wearing dark glasses,” Obama said, “and I’m going to cry.”
