Politifact’s ‘Lie of the Year’ Goes to Trump For His Many, Many Falsehoods

donald-trump1-300x1971-300x197Unlike in previous years, fact-checking website Politifact could not select just one statement for “Lie of the Year,” instead granting the honor to Donald Trump for his many, many falsehoods.

“PolitiFact has been documenting Trump’s statements on our Truth-O-Meter, where we’ve rated 76 percent of them Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire, out of 77 statements checked,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checker writes. “No other politician has as many statements rated so far down on the dial.”

Among the many false statements that Politifact said contributed to their decision:

  • That “thousands of Muslims” celebrated the 9/11 attacks in New Jersey
  • That the Mexican government “sends the bad ones over” the border
  • That 81% of white murder victims are killed by blacks
  • That he never said the cruel things about women that Megyn Kelly claimed he had

Donald Trump also won the reader’s poll for Lie of the Year, for his statement about the New Jersey Muslims.

Ironically, the Lie of the Year was announced the day after Trump received his first ever “True” rating from the organization, after he accurately said that Vladimir Putin has a 80 percent approval rating in Russia.
