HBO released the trailer for its John McCain documentary John McCain: For Whom The Bell Tolls.
“I’ve been tested on a number occasions. I haven’t always done the right thing,” McCain says to the camera. “But you will never talk to anyone that is as fortunate as John McCain.”
In the trailer, the Arizona senator reflects on his time as a POW during the Vietnam War and how one of the interrogators said, “things will be very bad” for him.
The documentary features interviews with several former presidents. Bill Clinton applauded how McCain was always able to “break the mold” if it was “the right thing to do,” calling that an “invaluable commodity.” George W. Bush joked how he thought he was “going to whip him” in the 2000 presidential election and how McCain thought he was “going to whip me.” Barack Obama thought McCain’s quote “We’re all Americans. We’re on the same team” indicated who he “fundamentally was.”
“We need to give the American people what they deserve and right now, they’re not getting it,” McCain said.
Former Vice President Joe Biden also applauded his former colleague.
“The measure of a man is how he responds under adversity. And look at John,” Biden said.
