BREAKING: McConnell Says Trump Will Sign Border Compromise and Declare National Emergency
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that President Donald Trump will sign a compromise bill to avoid another government shutdown, and will also declare a national emergency in order to try and secure funds for construction of a border wall.
In remarks on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon, McConnell also said he would support the national emergency declaration.
“I had an opportunity to speak with President Trump and he, I would say to all my colleagues, has indicated he’s prepared to sign the bill,” McConnell said. “He will also be issuing a national emergency declaration at the same time.”
“I indicated to him I’m going to support the national emergency declaration,” McConnell added.
Many Republicans and conservatives have said they are opposed to a national emergency declaration, and legal experts say such a declaration would face significant legal challenges. Trump has previously promised that Mexico would pay for the wall.
