Jake Tapper: If Early Exit Poll Results Hold Up, ‘This is A Rebuke of President Trump’

CNN released numbers from early exit polls late this afternoon, and one of the takeaways is that there is an abundantly clear Trump factor at play.

It’s obviously too early to draw any broad conclusions about the results from these numbers, but Jake Tapper said if they pan out, it will be “the first test of the so-called resistance, of people who oppose President Trump and their ability to get people to the polls.”

He continued:

“And if these numbers are to be believed, and again, it’s early yet, these are preliminary numbers, this is a rebuke of President Trump. I mean, when you have 55 percent disapproval, 56 percent saying it’s on the wrong track… 47 percent strongly disapprove of President Trump. If these preliminary numbers hold out throughout the rest of the night, that’s a strong rebuke of the President.”

He noted previous bad midterm results for presidents before Trump, though Tapper did point out that one factor on the President’s side is “the fact that the map for the Senate is so difficult for Democrats.”

In the Senate, Democrats are playing defense, Tapper added, while noting Republicans are the ones playing defense in the House.

But multiple times he emphasized that these are just preliminary numbers and, well, anything could happen.
