We already covered how Katy Perry made some passive aggressive remarks about President Trump when she opened up the 2017 Video Music Awards, but she eventually offered a more-pointed comment about how Trump lost the American popular vote despite winning the presidency.
As Perry moved the festivities towards the Best New Artist award, she expressed her sympathies to the people of Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. After that, Perry alluded to how the public polling has played out so far on who will win tonight’s award.
“Listen, guys, this is one election where the popular vote actually matters,” said Perry. “So vote online, but hurry up, before some random Russian pop star wins.”
Trump defeated Hillary Clinton when he sealed his victory in the Electoral College, even though Clinton beat his raw vote total by approximately 3 million votes. Trump has disputed the circumstances of how he lost the popular vote, and he has commissioned an investigation into whether that actually happened.
