Trump Says He Dealt with Obama Muslim Question Better than ‘Harsh’ McCain

Donald Trump’s refusal to correct a supporter who called President Barack Obama a non-American Muslim at a New Hampshire town hall this week immediately drew contrasts to a similar incident during the 2008 election when John McCain corrected a woman who called Obama an “Arab.”

After posting some tweets in his defense on Saturday, Trump addressed the issue for the first time in public on Saturday night in a speech to evangelical Christians in Iowa, and even criticized McCain’s handling of the 2008 incident, which he characterized as a little “harsh.”

“Remember the famous day when John McCain just ripped that microphone out of the woman’s hands?” Trump asked his audience. “That was a little bit harsh, to be honest with you. Does anybody agree with me? That was harsh, wasn’t it? They gave him so much credit.”

This is the second time Trump has publicly disparaged McCain. Back in June, he questioned the Republican senator’s “war hero” status, saying, “He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
