Leaving out that one key word plays into the spin at the time that she wanted them to go back and finish the Holocaust. Whereas including the word America shows the point of the comment as being going back to their homes from before Isreal was created. One word, huge difference in implied meaning.

It’s amazing that a people who have been through so much have managed somehow to not only survive, but to excel, despite so much hate and so many people’s efforts to destroy them. Instead of resenting them, those who hate them might be better off emulating them.

What’s worse than the false accusations of anti-semitism being heaped on Helen Thomas is how the media constantly distorts reality. By leaving out one word of what she said, namely, that the “Israelis should go back to where they come from, Germany & Poland”, and leaving out “America” creates a total distortion. Many Israelis were Holocaust survivors from Germany and Poland and obviously they wouldn’t want to go back to these countries. Many survivors, though, did come to America. Mediaite is very clever in twisting things to make them more enticing, but they should be more careful. Also, some of the rabid rightwing remarks are motivated by the fact that Helen Thomas has been for many years an outstanding critic of rightwingers. She was one of the louder voices against Bush, especially his Iraqi holocaust. Also, she can’t be an anti-semite because she is of semitic Arab ancestry! And Israel does have undue influence in America, most of it good, but in the case of Israel it’s definitely one-sided against the Arab world. Eventually, world opinion will force Israel to make serious accomodation to the Palestinians. Most likely, there will have to be one state for both Palestinians and Israelis with protection for all. If something like this happens, Israel will be the lynchpin for modernizing the entire Middle East.
