Time‘s Top Ten Reasons Magazines Are Doomed

434px-Demi_Moore00 There was a day when magazine covers could make or break a career, or a magazine (remember pregnant Demi Moore’s cover for Vanity Fair? Of course you do, that was 1991). Those days are mostly long gone. I can barely remember a magazine cover from the last three years (with the possible exception of last year’s Obama New Yorker cover) let alone pinpoint those that came out in the last 12 months. We are too relentlessly inundated with images for any one thing to make that much of an impact. Unless is it real life, and even then it’s a challenge to hold anyone’s attention for that long.

That said, we may not have magazine covers to celebrate for that much longer, so let’s enjoy whilst we can. To that end Time has listed their top ten magazine covers of 2009 — including two each from New York and The New Yorker (two magazines people still devotedly subscribe to, myself included). Here are the three I actually remember seeing in real life (sincerely). Sigh.

The only opportunity most people have to see or read TIME and Newsweek is when they visit a dentist or a doctor. Both magazines chose to head down a certain ideological path, and now they’re whining because the masses decided not to follow them. And it’s pretty laughable that they whine about ‘lost advertising revenue’ while cheering for a President hell-bent on demonizing capitalism. How dumb is that? Where do they think advertising comes from…a fairy?

Yeah I remember this cover of VF. I remember how it nauseated me. I guess it depends on what your definition of “memorable” is.

@CRZ: Agreed. Enough of these artificial page-view enhancers. Your advertising profit boost comes directly at the expense of reader goodwill.

Hey it is very strange that demi moor is posing nude like this when she is pregnant. She doesn’t know what she is doing…
