As Glenn Beck Departs, Bret Baier Leads ‘Next Generation’ At Fox News

Audio

Quietly, without chalkboards or bluster, Bret Baier has cemented his position as one of the top talents at Fox News, often eclipsing the ratings of some of the network’s more high profile stars, like Sean Hannity and yes, Glenn Beck. With Beck’s future now taking him away from the 5 p.m. slot he’s held, Baier represents a part of the Fox News story that usually gets overshadowed by the drama and excess that surrounds stars like Beck. For the most part, Baier does news.

As Jamie McIntyre, a former CNN correspondent, told NPR’s David Folkenflik, Baier’s reputation is one of an “inordinately fair” reporter:

“I remember thinking that if you took the average Bret Baier report at the end of the day and you took mine — and you stripped the names out so you didn’t know who was producing them — I’m not sure you could tell which report was generated by CNN and which was generated by the Fox News Channel,” McIntyre says.

But according to McIntyre, the focus of story assignments was different at Fox, which he says is closely attuned to the conservative sensibilities of its core audience. Baier has done well at Fox News by paying attention, McIntyre says.

Beck boosted Baier’s ratings, but Beck was opinion, Bair is news….don’t know why you conflated the two in this article. Bair has always been the next generation, and his coming up has nothing to do with Beck’s presence or lack thereof.

Baier a fair reporter? Give me a break. His reporters are frauds. Carl Cameron was caught fabricating quotes during the 04 election. Jim Angle is a partisan hack who rarely allows Democrats to have a word in his reports. Baier chooses stories that he thinks will be beneficial for Republicans and ignores ones that aren’t. His panel is stacked on a daily basis with two conservatives and one moderate, and no liberals. Kondracke is NOT a liberal. Anyone who thinks he is needs to have their mental health re-evaluated.

Baier is a partisan hack and a disgrace as a journalist.

I remember Baier’s interview with Obama last year…
    The Left was furious…

@TfT, “Bair has always been the next generation, and his coming up has nothing to do with Beck’s presence or lack thereof.”

I totally agree! I was a dedicated viewer of Baier and Shep Smith (the only 2 Fox shows I watch religiously) before I even heard of Beck.

    Like Dan Rather, son?

    Or CNN?

“CNN news chief Eason Jordan admitted in 2003 that for years the network had sugarcoated coverage of Saddam Hussein’s human rights atrocities in order to maintain access to the Iraqi dictator. Jordan said reporting Hussein’s crimes would have endangered CNN reporters in Iraq and meant the closing of the network’s Baghdad bureau.”

    Or the NYT’s?

“Fabrication & Plagiarism at The New York Times: Jayson Blair

“Jayson Blair was a young rising star at The New York Times until, in 2003, the paper discovered he had systematically plagiarized or fabricated information for dozens of articles. “

What a bunch of presumptuous gasbags you are here at left wing central aka MEDIAite along with various sundry friends to pretend to know ‘ Richard ‘ about the life and times of ” FOX NEWS ” ‘s Bret Baier. He not only is the best of the best at what he does ( president Obama only real interview ) he’s been THE BEST for a long, long time, not an up and comer as you’ve implied.

I’d also like to take that pompous meat pie from CNN up on his challenge whenever you can arrange it.

” FOX NEWS ” is only a non entity in the teeny, tiny minds of the morally bankrupt, jealous as all get out libs in the MSM and the Obama sycophants that blindly follow along.

  • Probably NOT wrong

Baier – that little porker? No thanks – no Fox channel at all for me. When Brit Hume basically stepped down and they put Bret in there – ugh!

  • Zandandido

The left wouldn’t like Fox News, even if Barack Obama became a Fox News host. Or if Anthony Weiner (whiner or wiener) was a Host was on Fox News, they left would still be furious.

If Baier is a “partisan hack,” who isn’t?

Also, is Baier actually a “journalist?” As far as I know, Baier is an anchor on a news magazine show with a neutral delivery. Does Baier also have a writer, producer, or executive producer credit on “Special Report?” Broadcast journalism works a lot differently than print you know.

I agree with you to a point and counter that “the right” feel the same way about MSNBC even if Sarah Palin and Dubya hosted shows there. But both these “righties” and “lefties” are conditioned to think a certain way. A certain “Ks Choice” song aptly describes them; the title rhymes with “Bobby.”

Yeah. Being given the opportunity to take over for Brit Hume is a major vote of confidence. Bret has delivered on his promise in that spot for 2 years now. I’m not sure why this piece is up, other than as another reason to mention Glenn Beck. Yawn.

Anchoring is different from journalism, sure. And sometimes the anchor does journalism. He may be anchoring at the moment, but Baier came to that gig as a journalist.

  • Paleoconservatarian

What? You’re just noticing now? Baier has been there all this time, doing a bang up job as always. He could do with one or two fewer perennial neo-cons on his panel, though.

Oh. This is another ‘Beck is fired’ story.

Mediaite’s Mark Joyella says, “Bret Baier has cemented his position as one of the top talents at Fox News.”

    Really?

I see him as the Willie Geist of Fox News.

A very nice man with the respect of his peers. But no gravitas and the boyhood looks of Mad magazines Alfred E. Neuman.

Of course he didn’t help disabuse us of this notion with a rather weak and embarrassing recent interview with Jon Stewart.

I guess you’ve blocked Bret’s interview where he ripped president Obama a new one clean out of your mind. Probably more due to lack of space in there than anything else I’m sure.

It’s also comical ( even more so than any of Stewart’s pithy retorts ) how the liberal mind instinctively mistakes a conservative’s kindness ( not treating Stewart like the punk he is ) as weakness and as you’ve erroniously concluded ( rather pompously, I might add ) Baier’s is lack of sufficient gravitas for your obviously sophisticated, oh so progressive taste.

Actually, I enjoyed the interview and admit that Bret Baier did okay in some aspects of the interview. He was pleasant, funny, non-combative and personable.

But I thought he really came up short in his ill-fated attempt to fend off Jon Stewart’s charges that unsubstatiated opinion-show comments leak into FNC’s daytime news programs as factual. There were also a few other times where he seemed unprepared for Jon’s FNC criticisms.

But Mr. Baier wasn’t the first media type to be embarrassed by Mr. Stewart. Just ask Chris Matthews or Jim Cramer.

Just another hired gun for the right. Big deal. At least he is not a dried up alcoholic and dyslexic who is delusional and a religious nut with messianic messages. All bow down to the Prophet of God, Glenn Beck. When will he write his Bible or Quran and what will he call it? I would bet on: “Political Primer for Bipolar Dyslexics.”

  • WillP

I know many people who ignore Beck’s program while watching Baier’s program at 6PM. Expect for Ailes to find someone more subdued, balanced and above all less controversial to fill Beck’s slot.

  • felixw

Baier is a fine reporter, but very vanilla. Fox should move up Redeye to take Beck’s time slot. That would shake things up.

It’s a conservative media outlet so why would the the left ever like Fox. Much compared to the right liking MSNBC, they never well.
