BBC Promises Weirdest, Coolest Christmas Special Ever. With Doctor Who.

It almost sounds right: A Doctor Who Christmas. Maybe because it sounds a lot like A Dr. Seuss Christmas. Or something.

But the Brits have decided to take their beloved-but-still-somewhat-confusing-to-Americans character, Doctor Who, and give him a good old fashioned holiday movie, based on the classic A Christmas Carol , written by Steven Moffat, creator of the recent Masterpiece Mystery hit Sherlock, and set to debut on BBC America on Christmas Day. Moffat described his sci-fi holiday mashup this way:

“Oh, we’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favorite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And … oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbors loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically.”

Doctor Who, meanwhile, is busy shooting in Utah for next season’s two-part series premiere that–ready for it?–is set in the U.S. in the late 1960s.

Okay, who’s in the holiday spirit now? You’re welcome.

Mark – a little advice. No one cares about what the Brits are watching on TV. You don’t work for Murdock anymore – at least I think you don’t. Lets hear your thoughts on what people REALLY care about. The Dancing Palin and Brett Farves penis!

I love “Dr. Who”! What a great Christmas gift. On Christmas Eve, a huge dinner, Midnight Mass, present exchange, blow-out party. Christmas morning: long, hot bath; left overs; “Vicar of Dibley” Christmas show, a truly great one; “Keeping Up Appearances” Christmas show with mulled wine and hot mince pies; “As Time Goes By” Christmas show, syrupy, but sweet; now, “Dr. Who”. Then, party, again.

How could we Americans possibly be confused about a Time Lord traveling through all time and space in a TARDIS with the Chameleon Circuit stuck as a late 20th century police call box with more space on the inside than the out side? Dr Who is the longest running SciFi program in the US and we love us our Time Lords and their companions. I am stoked for this Christmas.

I love Dr. Who! It’s a brilliant show. It’s not only Brits who are watching it; in case you don’t venture outside of 3 channels, BBC America plays Dr. Who and my nephew (home sick from school) is in the middle of a Dr. Who marathon. It’s his first viewing, and I think he is hooked.

If you guys like Doctor Who, you’ve got to check out Moffat’s reboot of Sherlock Holmes… the titular character could’ve been an amazing Doctor Who… but the style is hip, fun, and worth your time.
