Bill O’Reilly To Jay Carney: ‘Tell The President To Stop With Warren Buffett’

video

Perhaps in celebration of tonight’s presidential address made to a joint session of congress, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly opted to host his eponymous show live (insert your own “f*ck it, we’ll do it live” joke here). After a rather blasé opening segment with Lou Dobbs, things got much more interesting when O’Reilly welcomed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney onto the show to discuss President Obama‘s job speech.

Larry King once said that Bill O’Reilly simply uses his guests as props to put forth his own point of view, and that seemed to be the case here, regardless of the fact that his guest was the voice of the administration, after a joint session speech. Perhaps the most noteworthy moment was O’Reilly’s calling out of what he deems the White House charade of parading Warren Buffeft around to advance tax cuts to the super wealthy.

The back and forth between O’Reilly and Carney was remarkably convivial; it was long on smiles and laughter but light on actual discourse, or any exchange of ideas. The White House press secretary handled himself very well in his first appearance on The Factor, revealing both his respectful style and “in-on-the-joke” teasing by O’Reilly.

Colby would think a monkey handled himself well if the monkey was a democrat.

Colby wrote this story a couple days ago. Just change around a few words, add some quotes. Waaa -laaaaaa!

So how much did the President ask for this year’s Democratic Slush Fund, eh, I mean Jobs Plan?

Just curious is all!!Anyways we all know that Warren Buffet does not pay less taxes then his secretary….that is a total lie….only the PC underinformed buy into that BS….and those same underinformed happen to vote Democrat. Democrats wished everyone was stupid!

Bill called out Carney on the Immelt invite.  He should have also pointed out that this “bill” is not paid for, instead asking the super committee to find a way to paid for it.

  • Anonymous

how can you not include the gumby story that immediately followed?  His quip and transition to Gumby was masterful.

  • And

Bill also talked about parts he like in the speech. Odd Colby missed those parts as well.

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

No one is saying he pays less taxes than his maid, only that the tax rate on much of his income is less than the tax rate of his maid.

  • Norbit

Ya gotta’ love the “bum’s rush” on getting this plan through before anyone knows what hit them.

Or, as a Speaker-of-the-House once said (a sad commentary in itself): we have to pass it, so that we know what’s in!

    I trust them, don’t you?
    LMAO!

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

The best part was the Immelt stuff. Hilarious! And Jay trying to spin it was too funny. Bill nailed it.

    I saw this on twitter:

Jay Carney looks like Glenn Beck. They’re both using same hair bleach and wearing same frames. Creepy.

It’s true! Carney has morphed into Beck!

But Bill is right on Buffett, too. I wish he would have brought up the fact that Buffett owes like$1B in back taxes, too.

Just like healthcare “reform.” Obama has no idea how he’ll pay for it he just rams it through.

He doesn’t have any significant income, as defined by tax law. He makes almost all his money from capital gains.

Listen to Jay say “the president wants to put Party ahead of Country” right before the 7 minute mark.

    Bi-partisan ?

    I guess not.

  • Tampa Bay Raise

This is an indicator of the level of comprehension those on the right possess, they honestly think Buffett was saying he pays less than his maid in taxes, unbelievable.

Well that was an entertaining interview. Take notes Gretchen of Faux and Friends.

Give O’Reilly some credit; at least he admits he’s opinionated…

The “American Jobs Act.” Of course, if you oppose this plan, you must be against creating American jobs. What a way with words President Obama has.

WTF are you talking about. Capital gains are reported as income. However, they are subject to a lower tax rate. His business model is to invest in companies, hold long, and then make a profit.  His point is that the profits he makes in his business are subject to a much lower tax rate than his maid’s salary.

  • cdnhawk

Bill O is the only guy I can stand on Faux. He did a good job compared to Gretchen.

And his media will dutifully spread those words on his behalf.

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

I don’t expect Warren’s investment company to pay $1 more in taxes than they are legally required to under the law. If he and the government have a dispute over the proper treatment of certain items on his company’s tax returns, that are ultimately decided in the favor of  U.S. government, then his company will be subject to accrued interest on any outstanding balances.

  • Shirleyj_1945

He did not say ‘less’ taxes, he said lower rate!

The Obama administration couldn’t be more blatant and cynical, can they?

It’s nothing but a bunch of great sounding/poll tested soundbites. It’s devoid of substance, just like Obama.

He does pay a lower rate on the capital gains from dividends, but those dividends are paid AFTER they are taxed. Pre and post dividend taxes are about 43%.

  • B W

No, they couldn’t. And what’s pathetic is the American people will fall for this charade, because Obama knows how to sell his brand, like him or hate him. Remember, this is similar to the way the Bush Administration framed the debate over the War on Terror. And if you opposed the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (like I did), then you were either “unpatriotic” or “against the troops.”

O’Reilly’s show is as much about how he views the world as anything else – which is fine as long as you know that going in.  Its not unlike watching to see how Johnny Carson might react to a guest or his feelings on a new act or movie.  The information shared is unique and valuable, but there’s also perceived value in observing how Bill will go after a certain point of a given topic – with satisfaction when he hits what you want him to hit and irritation (or learning something) when he goes after something else.  I generally like when he has Megan Kelly on since she’s as likely to rip him a new one as he is to others.

  • Anonymous

You’re missing the point genius. Buffet is the biggest holder of Berkshire stock which is subject to the corporate tax rates. Those earnings within Berkshire are taxed first, and then dividends are paid out which are taxed again. So GJ Pinks is right

  • Pit Boss

“And what’s pathetic is the American people will fall for this charade”

What’s more pathetic is the way the American people have been duped into believing that giving more money to the rich is in their best interest. The kicker is they’re being told that by rich people and they’re buying it.

I’d like to see someone actively working the discourse away from the bi-partisan talking points about big government vs. big business and toward talking about a workable economic model that promotes individuals opening their own businesses and creating their own jobs. As it is right now, we have two parties steering the discourse in the direction of their choosing, with no one even attempting to step back and think about what’s truly best for ALL of the American people.

  • Anonymous

“Change you can believe in”…yeah right! Just more of the same old cynical, partisan BS. The only difference is that now if you disagree with the Democrats and Obama, you’re a racist who hates America.

  • Pit Boss

Dude just because you didn’t understand it doesn’t mean the rest of us are that dumb. It was very clear the first time, you just got the FauxNews butchered version.

  • Pit Boss

As long as the religious right is the winner of the Republican primaries Obama will have no problems getting re-elected. I would like to see Huntsman or Paul win it all, but that’s not going to happen because they don’t appeal to the majority of Americans who are either too lazy or stupid to open their eyes.

  • Anonymous

AJ. We’re talking about personal income here. Not the income from the company. That’s a separate issue. Buffet is not the sole proprietor of Berkshire. He is a stockholder. How much the company gets taxed affects the profits of the company, and thus the dividends, but the company profits are not his income.

  • Anonymous

You’re right; I used to think they were playing dumb just to
defend the indefensible. Now, I really believe a lot of this goes right over
their heads and they resort to parroting whatever Limbaugh and Hannity say to
try and keep up and pretend they understand issues they really have no clue
about.  Limbaugh knows this and that’s
why facts don’t matter to him because he knows his fans will simply repeat his
lies because they think it makes them sound smart.

Warren Buffett said he pays less taxes and the democrats bought it.  It’s misleading or a lie – take your pick.  O’Reilly was right to point it out.  Warren is pandering to the Pres.  For what reason, who knows.

Lots of the left on here believe that to be true and it isn’t.  If what Obama was saying that he wants to raise the capital gains tax – then say that and quit with the lie

That would go over big btw.  lol

No, Fox News got it exactly right.  They didn’t butcher anything.

Immelt was sitting in the President’s box.

There are also plenty investment companies that operate as limited liability companies or as S corporations where dividends and capital gains pass through to the shareholders without corporate level taxation. His point is that there are plenty of individuals who make their living as individual investors, but who pay taxes at a rate significantly lower than the maids that work for them.

  • Pit Boss

  • Just some Blow Hard…

I wasn’t defending Obama, I was asking why this is crucial issue for you since no one has done this since 1950 and the party you support always seems to make it worse.

  • Valkyrie101

Almost all the corporations, including GE, have moved most of their manufacturing overseas. That has been 25 years in the making. We certainly can not demand that corporations manufacture in the US, but we can cause there to be a significant benefit to those corporations that manufacture here in the form of tax credits.

  • Valkyrie101

    Why?

  • Valkyrie101

I doubt if you ever trusted Obama, let along, “anymore”. In fact your game as long as I can remember is to trash the president for any and all things. Which is fine. The health care reform act is not really “Obamacare” because Obama’s reform plan was deep sixed by the republicans. “Obamacare” is just a very sad compromise. As for the stimulus, though you do not admit it, that created jobs.

O’Reilly, I’m impressed. I didn’t watch the  speech, but did catch O’Reilly.   He nailed it that the focus will be to increasing the capital gains tax, and he’s also right that people will change their investments because of it.  Explains the obsession with Warren Buffet.

Does seem crazy to hit actual investments when on the edge of a ‘double dip’ recession cliff, but it’s a strange place in DC.  Raising capital gains is an easy ‘political’ answer to raising taxes, but is a dangerous move to make right now.   Most people won’t understand the difference, which works politically.  Any housing investment gets hit too, so if passed, the housing market gets hit as well.

  • Anonymous

Buffet is one my business heroes, so he’s right to attack this point as being misleading, BUT should acknowledge how much Buffet has done for the US economy

Carney actually was good on the show, it was a good back and forth, which is what the media is supposed to do.

you could have ended it at ‘no idea’.  Romney had that right.  Obama is a nice person, and wants to do the right thing, just has no clue how to do it.

Buffet, like all liberals, is a hypocrite.

  • Valkyrie101

Tax credits, however, are only meaningful if there is a healthy tax to credit against.

  • MontyPyth0n

or you can spend less money and not need so much tax revenue from the American people. Or since these businesses will now be back in the US with US workers the tax base is expanded which increases revenues on its own. Tax revenue and tax credits are not a zero sum scenerio. Certain actions that, at face value, would appear to lower revenues (such as cutting tax rates) can actually increase revenue to to the economic expansion that it could lead to. Its just not as simple as give tax credit here and raise taxes there to cover it.

  • MontyPyth0n

because if he really thinks he is undertaxed and really thinks he should pay more, why should he wait for the government to force him? If his convictions tell him he should be paying more than what is stopping him? You always hear these wealthy lefties complain the rich don’t pay enough. Well buck up guys and cut those checks!

  • Valkyrie101

The point is, that the corporations that manufacture abroad because it is much cheaper must pay a penalty by facing higher taxes than those corporations that provide jobs in this country, otherwise they will not be motivated to bring those jobs here. That is accomplished by having a higher corporate rate, with credits for employing US workers. As it is now, the corporations cynically manufacture in places that do not regulate (for example, pollution and worker & product safety) and who routinely pay bribes to local governments for special advantages that are illegal in the US, then bring their cheaply made products back into the US, via republican free trade, and sell it here, thereby undercutting US manufacturing.

I agree with Bill on this one. It’s going to be another talking point that people will get tired of. It’s like Bachmann, who just keeps pounding on the repeal of Obamacare and He’s a one term president. That’s why she’s going south because that’s all she’s got. I still remember last summer and fall when Obama kept saying, You drove the car into the ditch and you want the keys back, well you can’t have them back. That didn’t work either, and the mid-terms proved it.

  • Anonymous

Capital gains are a form of income. They should be taxed as income. Giving them a different tax rate was designed to increase investment, but we don’t need that kind of investment any more. Businesses, big businesses, are sitting on lots of cash. They need customers, not more investors. The same goes for small businesses. Many are privately owned and don’t want or need investors. They only want/need more customers.

Only more customers can make a business grow.

As for O’Reilly, he has plenty of skin in this game. He is one who would have to pay more taxes because this is not ONLY about capital gains taxes. In fact, he is using capital gains taxes as a red herring.

  • Anonymous

Reform the tax laws, and he will. He knows that. You are agreeing with him.
    Shocking!
