Charles Krauthammer On Gingrich’s Campaign: ‘It’s Over, But He’s Staying In’

video

For the first time in what feels like time immemorial, someone had a worse day than Rep. Anthony Weiner. Newt Gingrich may still be officially running for President, but after today’s mass exodus of staffers, it’s hard to believe his campaign will last for much longer. So said Charles Krauthammer on Special Report today, who noted the lack of “seriousness” in the campaign ultimately led to its demise.

The Special Report panel today seemed to mostly agree that, as Juan Williams put it in understatement, the high number of staffers leaving their positions is “a bad sign.” Williams suggested “Tim Pawlenty is the big winner”– Pawlenty did hire former Gingrich staffer Sonny Purdue almost immediately– and Krauthammer noted that it does, indeed, “increase the chances that [Texas Governor Rick] Perry will run,” but that Perry’s potential campaign has nothing to do with the staffers leaving. “It has to do with teh way that Newt was running the campaign– or not running it,” he concluded, doubting its “seriousness.”

Ultimately, though, Krauthammer concluded that Gingrich would go the way of Rep. Weiner: “it’s over, but he’s staying in.”

It was over the day he appeared on MTP and made a complete fool out of himself.

I’d say it was over in like 1998. His chances of becoming President today aren’t any less than they were 2 months ago. Because 0 is still 0.

Its ridiculous that his run would be over for not falling in line with what they want to be a unitary view for the party. That he has to support a newly proposed plan or he can’t run as a republican. We have come to a time where you cannot deviate from the pack, or the collective.

    RIP Newt 2012

The Democratic strategy for 2012 should just be: Give them (GOP) enough rope. These sorts of purity proclamations don’t play well with independents who decide elections.

Yeah, they sure didn’t buy it in 11/2010 did they?

Publius doesn’t exactly work with all chairs on the deck. He just touts liberal ideology.

    Charles! Your language, sir!

    Gingrich is right!

I don’t give a da.n if I ever greet, meet or even see the President; I don’t need to know any involvements about his/her personal life!

Just do an HONEST & EFFECTIVE job running the country!!!

    Gingrich never had a chance…
it was over when he said the age of Reagan was dead…
it was over when he backed climate change…
it was over when he backed away from the Ryan plan…

    Chris Matthews 06-08-11:

“Because the people in the rural areas of this country who are Christian, conservative, culturally – you can say ‘backward’ if you want – they don’t like this stuff.”
    ———————————————————————–

GOP! – You political Morons! – This is a GIFT!
    THIS IS A COMMERCIAL!!!

You can indict the whole Democratic Party with this proclamation from one of their leading advocates!
    - and, you’ll simply be describing what they truly believe!!

    It’s a Win-Win!

3 good points, but he still had plenty of worthwhile ideas.
Like Guilliani in 2008, he just kind of imploded – although his might have been from the medical treatment he was undergoing.

Midterms are of course exactly the same as Presidential elections, and the results from one automatically foreshadow the results of the other.

    He was definitely a non-starter.

Guess Newt can go back to scamming people online and giving “awards” for those who pay 5000$ to receive them.Or maybe go back on vacation.
Must be hard work to be Newt Gingrich.

That’s so true, you can’t let science and facts get in your way.

The baggers and the plutos weren’t voting for him anywayl

  • WildMan

Charles, Charles, Charles…did you seriously think that any of us Independents and Republicans were ever going to vote for crazy Newt? Seriously did ya?

Now are you using “baggers” as a term of diparagement here?

  • Helix

Newt’s age, lack of leadership skills and ethics made him a non-starter as well. Hopefully he will drop his campaign soon. Newt is very smart(history professor) and would make a good adviser, but he never should be placed in a leadership position.

Yeah, If I got my clock cleaned like the Dims did in 2010, I would say the same thing.

Thats how the GOP roll. Look how they have to call and apologize to Rush if they get off message.

It will be nice if Gingrich contributes something of substance to the public debate.

I read on a right-leaning website earlier today that the major issue (certainly not the only issue) was with Newt’s wife.

She was the one who insisted on the Greek vacation and the staff was upset with her unwelcome involvement with the campaign. One staffer even going so far as to suggest that a candidate’s wife should have no role in the campaign planning. Hmmm.

There were two articles on Mediaite today about the staff departures … I am curious why this was not mentioned in either piece.
