Michelle Obama Put On The Spot About Sarah Palin And Tea Parties

video

First Lady Michelle Obama was a guest on Larry King Live last night to discuss her new anti-obesity, “Let’s Move” campaign.

Somewhat surprisingly, Obama was put on the spot by the CNN host with some tough-ish questions about Sarah Palin and tea parties, although the first lady has learned to give a good political answer.

She started with an extremely diplomatic answer. “I try not to set opinions with people I haven’t had any substantive interaction with,” she said, and later, responding to Palin criticizing her husband: “Democracy is about critique, and the President is not immune to criticism. I think he’s doing a phenomenal job.”

But she did have one specific positive comment about Palin. “I think it’s wonderful to have strong female voices out there, but I don’t know her,” she said.

As for the tea parties, Michelle Obama steered even further away from an actual answer. “I’m focused on what’s in front of me, and right now that’s ending childhood obesity in a generation,” she said. But, she also said this of childhood obesity, which, frankly, the tea partiers would have to agree with:

An issue that has no politic party, has no base in liberalism or conservatism, but it’s about our kids and making sure they have the best life possible.

Maybe Michelle Obama can lead the Green Tea Party.

Here’s the segment:

well, good for her. she learned how to answer without actually answering. it beats the Michelle of old, that wanted to scratch out Bill Clinton’s eyes, and insulted Hillary with her “if you can’t run your own house, how can you run the White House” comment. Nobody wants to see the FOTUS getting into dirty politics.

Maybe Michelle Obama can lead the Green Tea Party. – haha
She’s taking on a good cause.

MO said, “When he (Obama ) went into office we were on the brink of a depression.”

Wrong, we were in a recession and still are; noting has changed except we are deeper in debt.

MO said, “I am very smart!”

    LOL…LOL…!

  • Jim R

A class act all the way, intelligent and poised; just like her husband.

It must be frustrating as heck for the right to be faced with so much goodness while attacking relentlessly.

I’m wondering, did anyone ever ask Laura Bush “but, does it sting? Does it sting when you hear those things?” when Obama attacked Bush?

  • Azarkhan

Wow! Great responses by the First Lady. Smart, classy, and diplomatic.

Two comments esp: “I try not to set opinions with people I haven’t had any substantive interaction with,” (that certainly isn’t the case for anyone commenting on Mediaite, including me!) and “I think it’s wonderful to have strong female voices out there, but I don’t know her,” (I wonder if femi-nazis like M. Dowd or T. O’Neal were listening). Again, excellent!

It didn’t seem to bother the left when attacking Mrs. Bush’s husband.

  • The Real Royal King

Cut the crap, Sara(h) N. Italy. Yes, Laura was asked that question, notably on some of the Sunday shows. This “the poor Bushies” routine is really getting very old. Laura was always handled with kid gloves, as well she should have been.

If rightists like you ever pay the Obamas the respect due them, it is always begrudgingly as in your first post. “Good, but ….” Is the condition subsequent really necessary. Laura was a class act. Michelle is a class act. Can’t we just leave it at that? Is it necessary to tear everyone apart in the right’s journey for ideological purity? We have had enough stridency from progressives and liberals and from the right. When does it end? When can we finally be civil, again?

This is very old and tiresome.

  • JamesA1102

The First Lady showed that she has a lot of class.

More class than Mr. Krakauer showed with his snarky final sentence.

  • The Real Royal King

That is a bit snarky, isn’t it?

  • http://sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

real royal pain in the rear –

i asked if laura was asked, i never saw the interviews. do you think she feels a sting, one year out of the white house, and still has to listen to obama blaming her husband?
    what “poor bushies” routine?
michelle and barack spent two years dissing Bush, and Obama still attacks him. while the msm may be wondering if michelle feels a sting, i have ever right to wonder if anyone ever gave a rats ass how laura bush felt/feels.

    i am not a righty.
what respect are they *due*? i don’t give them any more or less respect they gave/give Hillary, Bill, Palin, McCain, or Bush.
while i was not a supporter of Bush, i sat for 8 years and wondered when the left and progressives were going to act with civility.

From the very first day I logged on to discuss the 2008 election, and proclaimed myself a Clinton supporter, i was called racist, and worse. Even though, at the time, I liked the unknown Obama, just preferred Hillary. So, for three years now I have been wondering when Obama supporters are going to grow the f*ck up and quit attacking everyone and screaming racism at anyone that doesn’t support Obama (those very same people who attacked Bush for eight years). I don’t like Obama. I think he is an empty suit, a liar, and inexperienced. He criticizes Bush endlessly, but when he embraces a Bush policy he claims, “well Bush did it too.”

But what i absolutely HATE are his supporters like you. People like you do FAR more harm to Obama than anyone who opposes him.

I agree, it is very old, and very tiresome. So stop it.

The Green Tea Party line? I don’t think that was snark – I though it was a delightful and light-hearted turn of phrase that made me laugh out loud. (Now if only there was a more convenient way to convey the fact that I laughed out loud)

I am just so thankful you didn’t write “LOL! LOL! LOL!”.

I thought it was funny, Colby. :O)

  • JamesA1102

Oh cut the crap Sara! I’ve read your blogs and you’ve been an Obama hater from day one. And don’t claim that the only problem with Bush was that the left didn’t act civilly after he stole an election, ignored warnings of a terrorist attack and then used that terrorist attack to launch an invasion of another country based on lies, gave the rich a huge tax cut (using reconciliation in the Senate) which drove up the deficit and then ignored New Orleans being destroyed. You are the one who is getting very old and tiresome with your lies and hypocrisy. So stop it and go see a therapist about your obsessive hatred of the President.

  • mcf1757

Sarainitaly its time to put down the kool-aid!!

  • liberalontogeny

Very well done First Lady! Some here, including me, described as classy. Now go have a work session with Robert Gibbs on being ‘ diplomatic’

That is a flat out lie. Back prior to Feb 2008, I still liked him, despite all of his nasty supporters. Feb 7 I wrote that I still liked him, but I was not joining the love fest for Obama because there was a laundry list of things that I had learned about him that I wasn’t impressed with, including his gay roadshow in SC.. From there he started ripping off speeches, his supporters couldn’t name one accomplishment of his, he started accusing the Clintons of racism, voting irregularities emerged out of the caucuses, Ferraro was attacked as a racist, Obama lied about Wright, NAFTA, Selma, and it kept going downhill from there. So, you are flat out wrong, pal.

And for the record, I wasn’t a Bush supporter and never voted for him.

Ummm, sounds to me like you might want to take your own advice: “So stop it and go see a therapist about your obsessive hatred of the President”:
    he stole an election
ignored warnings of a terrorist attack
used that terrorist attack to launch an invasion of another country based on lies,
    ignored New Orleans being destroyed.

Sounds like you have your own issues to deal with…

  • JamesA1102

Please Sara you are totally transparent. I’m not, and I’m guessing many here, are not buying to your BS anymore.

    And as far as:

    “he stole an election
ignored warnings of a terrorist attack
used that terrorist attack to launch an invasion of another country based on lies,
    ignored New Orleans being destroyed.

Sounds like you have your own issues to deal with…”

Those are not my issues but issues that this country will have to deal with for years to come.

Ummm, gee ok. You told a lie about me, I responded and you call it BS. Obviously you have not read my blogs prior to Feb/Mar 2008, have you?

So, what BS, exactly, am I selling?

The bigger story here is that Michelle Obama’s crusade against obesity is nothing more than a giveaway to SEIU:

  • JamesA1102

No Sara I told the truth about you and called you on your BS and you don’t like it. And I have read you’re blog including the one titled “PUMA in Italy” (PUMA being the operative word here being the name taken by anti-Obama Hillary supports who couldn’t get over the fact that she lost) and all they are are a lot of snark about how nasty Obama supporters are and what a phoney he is. Like I said cut the crap and seek professional help.

What brought you over here James? Did DU start picking on Obama, so you had to move to greener pastures? Are you still over at HuffPO? You know it was the mean and nasty Obama supporters at HuffPo and DU that gave me the final push me away from Obama. I couldn’t reconcile how someone who was supposed to be such a *uniter* could have such ugly, vile, nasty supporters.

  • The Real Royal King

Sara(h) N. Italy: What bought JamesA1102 here was the internet. Or, as Republicans like to call it, the internets, which I have been told is a series of tubes.

As for you blogs February/March 2008, I would encourage you to discourage, not encourage people to read them. They make you appear inconsistent and flighty.

My sister is a psychologist. Would you like a referral? Be sure to bring your prescriptions with you.

    f*ck off real royal.

  • The Real Royal King

Such a lady you are, Sara(h) N. Italy! Not to worry. I’ve already forgiven you. I’ll say it, again. I’ve already forgiven you.

“She started with an extremely diplomatic answer. “I try not to set opinions with people I haven’t had any substantive interaction with…”, and there, is the problem. She has never mixed with everyday normal American citizens. She has been surrounded by the members of her church of 20 years, the political organizers that connected with the Rezko’s and Jarrett’s of this world. Perhaps she needs to meet us. She might like us, you never know, stranger things have happened!!

Yes all Obama supporters are mean and nasty because they disagree with you. And what brought me here was reading your BS and wanting to call you on it.
