Sen. McCain: We Shouldn’t Dictate What Role The ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ Takes In Egypt

Video

Republican Senator John McCain appeared on Face the Nation this morning and was happy with the news from Egypt so far, but stressed the importance of there being free and fair elections in the country. Most interestingly though, he did not take a tough stand against inclusion of the Muslim Brotherhood in that process, departing from the view of some his Republican colleagues.

McCain elaborated:

“We have reasons to be concerned about the Muslim Brotherhood, but at the same time for us to dictate what the role they should play in a way may be harmful to us because . . . this revolution is theirs and they want us to assist. They don’t want us to dictate.”

After the Egyptian people successfully achieved their freedom, McCain is probably correct in thinking the last thing America should be doing is telling Egyptians what would be best for our country’s interests. Yet, at the same time if the Muslim Brotherhood does somehow manage to gain significant influence in the country, then might McCain regret not being more vocally opposed to their inclusion now?

Megan McCain is doing her father’s notecards again .

I think McCain is correct. We should not dictate what Egypt should do but at the same time we can communicate our interests.

That’s just ol’ maverick being all “unmavericky”. He knows he can change his tune again and again and again…6 years is a long time….

You finally put down your crack pipe, I see.

Seems as if he’s moderated somewhat from “bomb, bomb, bomb — bomb, bomb Iran.”

  • TampopoLoco

Does anyone even care what this guy has to say anymore? He seems so irrelevant now.

Since when did Senator McCain start making sense again? Paleoconservatarian is right in saying that this is a big change from the “bomb, bomb Iran” stance.

“Sen. McCain: We Shouldn’t Dictate What Role The ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ Takes In Egypt”

    Spoken like a true lunatic-left d-crat socialist !

In the underbelly of the US Senate (specifically, at the end of the lower intestine) is where we find THE SLIMEBAG SIX despicable, rino traitors who will continue to support d-crat socialist issues, and everybody knows who they are: AMNESTY-JOHN mccain, scott brown, collins, snowe, murCOWski and graham.

That’s part of the “hit list” for all American patriots to follow in future elections.

It had to happen to the lefts favorite McCRino

You sound like a fascist. So you think the US should dictate what a sovereign nation should do?

this is exactly true.. in fact it should be a fundamental part of our foreign policy. The United States has NO RIGHT to dictate what any other nation must do. We can express our interests and concerns but that should be it.

    I disagree.

Far be it for me to defend John McCain. But if you are going to stand for the principle that we should not dictate their ‘free and open’ election, then we cannot second guess our principle if the outcome falls short of our expectations.

Actually, McCain will flip flop when things go upside down in Egypt. There’s one thing that McCain is not. Consistent. He’s a serial flip-flopper. Don’t take these nuanced statements of his any seriously. They are subject to change.

Just suppose we DID want to “dictate” to the Muslim Brotherhood. ‘Splain to me just how we might go ’bout doing that.

The more the U.S. State Department gets involved with trying to influence the outcome of the democratic elections in Egypt the more potential there is for unintended consequences to occur.

There are already thousands of Egyptians living in New York City that are more concerned about political events in their homeland than in becoming Americans. If there is civil strife in Egypt that will mean that the State Department will be bringing thousands-more Egyptians to be “resettled” in our country as “Political Asylum” refugees:

The great thing about fear mongering is that it crosses all borders and cultures. Suppose the USA starts beating its chest and waving its stick around cursing about the Muslim Brotherhood and how they are unacceptable. The only people that will help is the Muslim Brotherhood. “Look! Look what America is saying!! You need US to protect you from them and the Zionists!”

  • More Liberty4

I agree with McCain. We need to let the chips fall where they may. Additionally, we need to stop sending them tax payer dollars. We can’t afford this crap anymore.

Tell them good luck and we hope that the people get some liberty for themselves. However, if the do become violent and attack US citizens, we reserve the right to retaliate – but that doesn’t mean we nation build.

My main point was more that McCain’s political positions seems to go with the prevailing winds. He’s for treating the MB with kid gloves because that’s what the administration is bent on doing. I think it’s been shown that we have diminished influence to dictate the course of events anyway, so it’s a safe position to take.

I guess nobody knows. But plenty here are sure we don’t need to do it.
