Outgoing National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster delivered a speech tonight railing against Vladimir Putin and saying the West has “failed to impose sufficient costs” for Russian aggression.
McMaster spoke at an Atlantic Council dinner tonight on 100 Years of US-Baltic Partnership––per Axios, it was his last speech as President Trump‘s national security adviser.
McMaster denounced Russian aggression against sovereign nations and said, “For too long, some nations have looked the other way in the face of these threats. Russia brazenly and implausibly denies its actions, and we have failed to impose sufficient costs.”
He brought up the nerve agent attack on a former spy in England as well as Russia’s “numerous cyberattacks against free nations.
“Mr. Putin may believe that he is winning in this new form of warfare. He may believe that his aggressive actions in Salisbury, in cyberspace, in the air, and on the high seas can undermine our confidence, our institutions, and our values. Perhaps he believes that our free nations are weak and will not respond to his provocations. He is wrong. Russian aggression is strengthening our resolve and our confidence.”
