A new White House insider report from the New York Times contains a weird but fascinating claim from White House aides regarding the icy relationship between President Trump and his chief economic advisor Gary Cohn.
The report from Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush is mostly a deep dive into how Chief of Staff John Kelly continues to impose discipline upon the West Wing.
However, towards the end, there is a snippet about how Kelly is reportedly trying to “shield” Cohn from the President’s “wrath”:
Mr. Kelly made a point, one staff member said, of throwing his arm around Mr. Cohn in solidarity, in full view of the news media, as they exited Marine One last week on the South Lawn.
But he has not always been successful. Several aides said Mr. Trump is freezing out Mr. Cohn by employing a familiar tactic: refusing to make eye contact with Mr. Cohn when his adviser greets him.
Reports have said Trump wasn’t happy after Cohn criticized his Charlottesville response, and it apparently reduced Cohn’s chances at becoming fed chair to, well, zero.
