For a president whose administration trumpets transparency, Barack Obama is being a bit covert with his tweets. Despite the fact that @BarackObama has been active since April 29, 2007, the president sent his first tweet yesterday. From the @RedCross account:
“President Obama and the First Lady are here visiting our disaster operation center right now.”
The Red Cross followed up with a confirmation that it was, indeed, the president:
“President Obama pushed the button on the last tweet. It was his first ever tweet!”
To his credit, the official @BarackObama Twitter page states that his account “is run” by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee. (And also proves the theory that Republicans tweet more than democrats; the account has 3,160,040 followers but has sent a mere 128 tweets in the last two and a half years.) However, it’s easy to overlook the disclaimer, and even if you does notice, you have to wonder why President Obama can’t take a few seconds to Tweet. After all real relationships are the appeal of Twitter.
But whatever the reason, for a president who can’t get enough of “let me be clear”, we would hope that if he tweets, then he could at least hint to the Twitterverse that it’s him. “Love, Barack Obama” is only 17 characters
