Ted Cruz’s Father Links Gay Marriage to Socialism
Ted Cruz’s father Rafael Cruz spoke to the Family Leader’s Summit in Ames, Iowa over the weekend, comparing President Barack Obama to former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and warning that the United States was chugging toward socialism via gay marriage.
“Socialism requires that government becomes your god,” Cruz said. “That’s why they have to destroy the concept of God. They have to destroy all loyalties except loyalty to government. That’s what’s behind homosexual marriage.”
Cruz described watching Castro’s rise in Cuba, and then his emigration to the United States as Cuba turned to socialism. He made repeated allusions to the failure of Castro’s “hope and change,” and connected Castro to Jimmy Carter’s “socialist” policies. By contrast, Cruz extolled his son’s rigid conservatism, which began when the younger Cruz read Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman in junior high.
Cruz also chastised the religious community for “remaining silent” in the face of society’s rising promiscuity and the Roe v Wade era. “It is time for pastors to stop hiding behind the pulpit,” he said.
