Trump: It’s Time for the United States to Recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli Territory
President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday it was time for the United States “to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights.” His tweets come just before Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Washington, D.C. and before his own election in April:
After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!

Netanyahu thanked Trump for the shift in policy shortly after:
At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump! @realDonaldTrump

The majority of the Golan Heights were taken by Israel during the Six-Day War and the country later annexed their portion in 1981. What wasn’t controlled by Israel was controlled by the Syrian government before their civil war.
