Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu: We’re Not Going to Build Trump’s ‘Stupid Vanity Wall’

Negotiations are back underway today on day one of the shutdown to reach an agreement. President Donald Trump is insistent on demanding a wall of some kind, and the Democrats are saying the wall is not on the table.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer explicitly told Trump to “abandon the walL” on the Senate floor today. On MSNBC this afternoon, before Schumer spoke, Congressman Ted Lieu (D- CA) was on MSNBC making the same point:

“We are now in day one of the Trump shutdown. It is not a proud day for America. It is a failure of the Republican leadership. They control the House, the Senate, and the White House. And Democrats are certainly happy to talk about border security. But we’re not going to build this stupid vanity wall of Donald Trump with U.S. taxpayer dollars.”

He also noted how Trump had pledged Mexico would pay for the wall in the first place, reiterating that Democrats would work with Republicans on increasing border security. But one of the problems, he added, is “Donald Trump’s ego.”

Lieu did say he supports Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria, saying he doesn’t support “endless wars.” He added that “it is a fair point to criticize the president for saying you shouldn’t do this by tweet.”
