As the sponsor of a bill that would ban large magazines, Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) “doesn’t know how guns work,” Steve Doocy asserted on Fox & Friends on Thursday. Criticizing DeGette for not having her facts straight, the hosts further went after DeGette for her controversially remarking, “You’d probably be dead anyway” in response to an elderly man’s question during a gun control forum.
Doocy went on to elaborate on how DeGette was confusing magazines and bullets, not realizing that magazines, unlike bullets, can be reloaded. “By her logic,” he noted, “when you run out of gas, you gotta buy a new car.” Which is “unfortunate” for those who support gun control — having someone who doesn’t understand the issue working on the legislation.
But that wasn’t the remark that made headlines yesterday. The stories largely focused on her interaction with a senior citizen who expressed concern about being at a significant disadvantage under new gun laws, citing a hypothetical situation. “The good news for you, you live in Denver. The Denver PD would be there within minutes,” she told him, later adding, in response to the hypothetical, “You’d probably be dead anyway if they had that kind of firepower.”
“Pretty good answer,” Brian Kilmeade quipped, while Doocy reminded, “And she’s the woman who’s sponsoring the federal ban on large magazines.”
