Trump Celebrates Anthem At Event Originally Meant For Philadelphia Eagles: ‘We Respect Our Flag’
President Donald Trump held a “Celebration of America” event in lieu of a celebration of the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday.
According to Fox News, Trump canceled the event due to a paucity of players who RSVPed in the affirmative, as well as the Eagles’ stance on standing for the national anthem. Multiple outlets reported, however, that every Eagle stood for the national anthem every game.
“We love our country, we respect our flag and we always proudly stand for the national anthem,” Trump said at the event.
“I want to take this opportunity to explain why young Americans stand for our national anthem,” he continued after he extended some thank-yous. “Maybe it’s about time that we understood. We stand to honor our military and to honor our country and to remember the fallen heroes who never made it back home. We stand to show our love for our fellow citizens and our magnificent constitution.”
“Our country has never done better than it’s doing right now, never,” Trump said, echoing a refrain he has often repeated about the “lowest unemployment numbers we’ve had.”
“I want to thank you all for being here. This is a beautiful, big celebration,” he concluded, and then said in true Trump fashion: “Actually, to be honest, it’s even bigger than we had anticipated.”
