Moments after addressing the horrific school shooting in Santa Fe, President Trump made a surprise announcement about plans to nominate a new VA Secretary.

The President ran down a list of several Cabinet secretaries, during today’s prison reform summit at the White House, before getting to Acting VA Secretary Robert Wilkie.

Wilkie has served as acting secretary since the departure of David Shulkin. Shulkin’s successor almost ended up being Dr. Ronny Jackson, until multiple reports on unprofessional behavior came out and he withdrew his nomination.

And it would appear that the President surprised Wilkie today with the announcement:

“…Acting Secretary Wilkie, who by the way has done an incredible job at the VA and I’ll be informing him in a little while––he doesn’t know this yet––that we’re going to be putting his name up for nomination to be Secretary of the Veterans Administration.”

After the applause, Trump added, “I’m sorry that I ruined the surprise.”
