Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) tried to get in on the anti-Hillary Clinton action Tuesday, but received an icy reception from his D.C. crowd.
“By the way, I understand Secretary Clinton chose not to join us,” Cruz told the International Association of Fire Fighters, a group that typically supports Democratic candidates. “If only you could have found a foreign nation to foot the bill.”
This was a reference to a report last month that the Clinton Foundation accepted donations from foreign governments during Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State.
According to reporters on the scene, the joke elicited only groans from the largely unappreciative crowd:

Cruz makes a joke about how Clinton would be there if a foreign nation would have footed the bill. Crickets basically

Cruz normally tears it up among right-wing crowds; this was one of his rare forays before a less rapt audience. The Fire Fighters union also hosted Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) from the Democrats’ side, but Clinton skipped the event.
