Rally To Restore Sanity/Fear: Mediaite’s On-The-Ground Coverage

live coverage

The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear is in full swing, with movement leaders Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert having announced the official beginning of the rally at noon. Our own Tommy Christopher in on the ground at the Washington mall and will be regularly updating us with photos, notes, and all the eccentric moments guaranteed for the day. Check regularly for updates!

As an early estimate, Tommy tells us “the crowd is humongous, I think this rally will eclipse Beck’s for crowd size.” Below is a sampling of the crowd demographics: “young” and “ironic” seem to be key adjectives so far.

Is that Tommy in the “Dumb Fux” t-shirt?

“I think this rally will eclipse Beck’s for crowd size.” Of course Tommy thinks that, and that is how it will be reported weather it’s true or false. But, why would he even report that, since this rally has nothing to do with Beck’s rally.

From what I’m reading the crowd size is a lot less than Beck got, but HuffPos busses apparently haven’t arrived yet.

  • TfT

Thanks for the pics Tommy, looks like an all-white crowd. I wonder if the media will report that?

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

Looking at C-span it looks like it really might.

I just saw quite a few African-Americans and Asians.

Tommy, I hope you got your rabies shots before you went!!

And I wouldn’t be surprised if the crowd was bigger than Beck’s. The difference, of course, is that at Beck’s rally, people paid their own way and weren’t bribed to go. Have fun!

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT;
In America, educators teach the young up and coming leaders of America how to squeeze the last drop of juice out of the turnip without using moral standards to guide them. The turnip, usually (the worker customer) is so busy trying to stay ahead of the survival curve, he has no time to follow or analyze the political activity going on between elections, and so what does he do? A week or two before election time, he listens to a number of broadcasters on TV telling everything from lies to more lies through manipulated misinformation to unfairly trick the voters into voting the way the News Media wants them to vote. The voters, being exhausted from trying to make a better living for themselves and their families, vote to the benefit of the fear mongers and manipulators which are usually big business backed.
The decent people make zillions of mistakes listening to bad information that has no benefit to the common working class people. The quicker people get it in their heads that no one is for the common working people but the common working people. All others are in the dog eat dog race to nowhere. If this sounds sadistic, it is but it is reality. The working class will always be kept hungry so that they will always be handy and if they don’t submit to accepting abuse from the rich, they will lose their jobs to foreign workers who are reported being treated like slaves and if they complain, we will see pictures of their bodies being fished out of the river while American business is profiting from all the activity. I don’t think the world will stay in orbit long enough for anyone or any government to stop it. Justice has a way of correcting some of this by allowing what goes aroung comes back around. We see this every day.

If you think your side is winning, how come only 21% of American’s consider themselves loony libs, while 40% say Conservative and the other 40% say they are Independent? Now granted, in your twisted brain (that you seem to share with Ted, RL, King, Donna, and BFD), that math might add up, but not in the real world!

That may be the case, but if you look at the actual issues, they are decidedly not conservative, you narrow-minded idiot. I’ll take you to the issue of the college student at stewart’s rally who calls herself conservative yet holds social liberal policies. Everything isn’t black and white like you think, stupid. I’ll take you to Lawrence O’Donnell’s segment where conservatives said we have to eliminate all socialism in the country yet none wanted to take away social security or medicare. I’ll take you once more to polls where the overwhelming majority of americans say that government should take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. Do you require proof of these because I can shut your stupid @$$ up with that as well.

Not sure what you’re trying to say here, but you just made the point that many (most?) people who identify themselves as conservative aren’t the right-wing extremists who the MSM would have you believe. Contrary to what a lot of people here apparently think, there are actually many educated intelligent people who are capable of critical thought, don’t live in trailers, don’t “cling to guns and religion,” etc., and who identify more with conservatives than liberals.

You are absolutely right. Most conservatives are not right wing extremist, just as most liberals are not left wing extremist. That’s the beauty of this rally, it is composed of reasonable people both on the left and the right, conservative and liberal. The real American people.

Note how it has scared some people on this forum seem to be of this rally, look at their denigrations. They don’t want to face the fact that our country is not a country of extremist, but instead a country of diverse and reasonable people who want to work together for a better future.

Seriously do you really want to go down that road, there were more black people on stage, then at glenn beck’s rally.

  • RIChris

Judging by the pictures, it was a Halloween party at the fraternity. Judging by the music, it was giving a mic to those who haven’t seen one in a while. Judging by the silence of the crowd, actual comedy was absent. But I bet it was a nice bus ride.

I’m actually kind of surprised that any Mediaite staffers were able to take these pictures, since I assumed you all would have been laying on your backs moaning, feet in the air, eyes rolling into the backs of your heads, with every word out of Stewart and Colbert’s mouths. Oh well. I guess that’s what they made DVR for.

My advice: make sure to get some extra scotch guard. Replays of this event are going to be hell on your furniture.

  • BarneyFranken

This clearly was in response to Beck’s rally to restore honor, right down to the identical poster design, mock benediction, and the obligitory Beck out-of-context snippets in their montage.

The difference is that rally goers went to this rally to be entertained, while those that came to Beck’s went to be inspired.

Right on! Sheryl Crow! Kid Rock! Cat Stevens! They originally wanted Nickleback, but they were too expensive.

Really, the only people missing were Huey Lewis and Phil Collins. I heard Milli Vanilli was going to headline the event until they found out that Milli was dead. R.I.P.

The vast majority of the crowd was young and white. I would say the percentage of minorities was no different than any tea party that I have been to. So, we all may just have to accept the fact that minorities just don’t like going to rallies and it has no meaning whatsoever.

But, I will tell you there was a great deal of intolerance to conservatives.

I wonder if mediaite will heed Jon’s call to stop the madness and restore sanity. Part of that includes being fair, and given the type of reportage here, fairness has not been the number one priority.

I’ll wait and see what Colby, Tommy or Frances post today on the aftermath of the rally. Will they show the negative signs (which were ignored yesterday) and discuss the majority white crowd in the same terms that did for the tea party rallies?

I wonder if Jon himself will work to restore sanity – his own show is quite insane when he takes things completely out of context and then jokes about them. Will he cease and desist in trying to tear conservatives down and pump liberals up?

    I’m not holding my breath.

Even the benediction made a point with it’s joke as Father Sarduci asked God to point out to us which religion was the correct one. The montage was about the media’s failure to really inform and illuminate the issues and instead use alarmist rhetoric. It included conservatives and liberals, but for the record, they could have filled up all that space with clips from Beck because he does it so often. That’s no exaggeration. He’s made some kind of Nazi, Hitler, communist, fascist, reference over 600 times this year. An average of twice a show.
I don’t find that kind of fear mongering to be informative or inspiring.

Why don’t you learn why beck references Hitler? There are valid parallels to what is happening today. The fact that the government is printing money and handing it out to people just means that the pain is being masked. At some point, we’ll have to deal with the issues and none of it will be pretty as people really suffer.

The other thing is the Progressives of the 20′s and 30′s were ENAMORED with Fascism. Hitler got some of his ideas from our liberals of the day.

It’s not only valid for Beck to point it out, more people should be pointing it out.

Look at the demographic, this rally was made out of mostly younger people, a real movement to take back the country is coming, and I’m not talking abut the tea party, the young people of this country will no longer sit back and listen to a bunch of middle aged men and women bitch and moan back and forth about their differences.

Why don’t you learn why beck references Hitler? There are valid parallels to what is happening today. The fact that the government is printing money and handing it out to people just means that the pain is being masked. At some point, we’ll have to deal with the issues and none of it will be pretty as people really suffer.

The other thing is the Progressives of the 20’s and 30’s were ENAMORED with Fascism. Hitler got some of his ideas from our liberals of the day.

It’s not only valid for Beck to point it out, more people should be pointing it out.

I believe I understand why Beck makes Hitler references. It’s called ratings and money.
I believe you are sincere and I appreciate your civil delivery of your theories on the evils or liberals. I also believe you are very wrong, and rather extreme. You have consistently ignored very relevant facts and major historic events while espousing your beliefs and that doesn’t help the credibility of your theory.

I completely understand people’s concerns about the deficit and the serious economic trouble we’re in. I share those concerns. I completely understand concerns about social programs and wanting to draw clear lines about what is helpful and what creates dependents and inhibits personal responsibility. I understand people’s concerns about tax rates that discourage innovation and smack of redistributing wealth. We can have meaningful and respectful discussions about those issues without mentioning Hitler or Nazi’s. It’s fear mongering bullshit and not likely to help anyone. It’s causes one portion of citizens to be extreme and another portion to dismiss them as cranks. That doesn’t promote honest communication. Beck is dishonest and has been ever since I first started watching him.
So frankly, as long as you’re willing to defend his Hitler references, and given your pattern of ignoring realities facts and history that don’t fit your pet theory, I can’t give your posts much weight.

    Thanks for the civility here.

Beck’s Hitler references are germane to the subject. Many times, the Hitler references are silly and just diminish the evil that is Hitler.

But Beck puts it in context. He also points out how the Progressives of the day were enamored with Fascism. Jonah Goldberg wrote a good book called Liberal Fascism that deals with the subject too. (See http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Fascism-American-Mussolini-Politics/dp/0385511841)

The Left attacks Beck for trying to bring out this information. Sorry, as I said, it is germane.

Why don’t you do a search on how Liberals think Bush is Hitler? Here, let me help:
    http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,18168,26637,26831,27219,27284,27357&sugexp=ci1b&xhr=t&q=bush+hitler&cp=8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=hnnPTMiaGYObnwfIm_iNBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&sqi=2&ved=0CCgQsAQwAA&biw=1920&bih=1075

The reality is beck’s reference are valid and the Left’s are false.
