“The Hammer” In The Slammer: Tom Delay Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison

AP is reporting that Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has been sentenced to three years in prison on conspiracy charges. In November, Delay was also convicted on money laundering charges for violating Texas law when he used corporate donations to support his hand-picked Republican candidates.

The punishment could have ranged between probation and at least 10 years in prison, what prosecutors sought. Delay argued that a long sentence is an unacceptable criminalization of politics and is expected to appeal the sentence.

I thought you were banned for your out of control hate-filled comments earlier, when you advocated murdering liberals. So sorry to see that Mediaite believes that advocating violence on this website is all right.

I wonder if the recent Supreme Court decision to let corporations donate directly as citizens makes what he did no longer a crime.

Funneling money to candidates directly and advertising are two separate issues and Citizens United has nothing to do with the fomer.

Remember the days when Tom Delay was one of the biggest embarrassments that the GOP had. Now that the Right has unleashed Palin and the Tea Party onto the world, Delay looks positively sane and sensible in comparison. In fact, if he had only waited a couple of years to funnel those funds, the Supreme Court would have deemed them legal free speech and Karl Rove would have gotten the US Chamber of Congress to do the money laundering for him

My how the times have changed. There was a time when the GOP would be embarrassed by a CROOK in their midst. Now being a CROOK is a pre-requisite.

Sorry to disappoint so many of you, but Delay’s conviction will probably be overturned on appeal. He raised money for the RNC; the RNC gave money to the Texas Republican Party; then the Texas party helped elect more Republicans.

One could try to put together a conspiracy to launder money, but that was not the charge. No, the Democrat district attorney claims that Tom Delay did it all by himself.

Incidentally, former DA Ronnie Earl tried and failed twice to get grand juries to indict Delay. He kept trying and eventually got one that would. But this case will eventually be overturned, after a great amount of taxpayer money has been wasted.

Democrats will probably say it was all worthwhile.

Hopefully, Maxine Waters and Chris Dodd will be fallowing shortly.
