Bill Maher: ‘What’s The Difference Between Rupert Murdoch And Larry Flynt?’

video

As much of a foregone conclusion as it was that Bill Maher and panel would weigh in in the now-infamous Bachmann Christian counseling clinic tonight, it was equally certain they’d discuss the woes of Rupert Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World paper, which culminated today in the resignation of the paper’s editor, Rebekah Brooks. The panel shed no tears for Murdoch.

Truth be told, this was a tame affair compared to the Bachmann segment…but then again, so is almost everything. Maher got an interesting crack in when he asked: “What’s the difference between Rupert Murdoch and [Hustler publisher] Larry Flynt?” Thomson Reuters’ Chrystia Freeland did her best to explain the difference, which in her mind has to do with the Murdochs’ “huge political influence.” Maher agreed:

Tony Blair from the left and Margaret Thatcher from the right – they all kissed [Murdoch's] ass.

[...]

He had the politicians in his pocket…and you do have to ask, did he have that here in America too?”

In fact, the nicest thing Maher said about Murdoch came later, when he argued that the mogul is not, in fact, Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. And it says something about just how tough Maher is on anything related to Republicans that we’re actually left a bit surprised at his level of kindness with that remark. Video below, via HBO.

Murdoch is Emperor Domitian. He is the most evil man on Earth,in my opinion of course.

One got shot by a serial killer/segregationist for showing images of a black man and white woman together and one didn’t. And Rupert has more $.

  • Dik Gozinya

Does short lowly little girly man Bill Mars have ability to buy special chair so his tiny feet can touch the ground yet or nyet?

Don’t know about that comrade, Hillary’s gotta be ranked pretty highly in that illustrious circle.

Yes… one conservative source of news in America is too many. News should only come from the left.

  • insideguy

Should be very interesting to see how far all of this goes

  • Anonymous

I thought they were Fair and Balanced????

  • Anonymous

I simply thought they provided “fairness” & “balance” to the news system as a whole. You know… making up for all the rest of the media that is liberal. There are MANY stories that would NEVER have been reported had Fox News not been created. Scandals not uncovered, facts ignored, sides not represented.  But that’s just me……

    BTW… IS MSNBC’s slogan…. “Ya, we’re a bunch of left wing loons”? No… it isn’t is it.

  • Anonymous

Now’s the chance for Glenn Beck to leak some FoxNews juice.

He wants to be the next Flynt/Murdach and this is his best chance.

  • insideguy

I would like to see the MSNBC staff mud wrestle the FOX staff. I would root for MSNBC but would enjoy seeing the fox babes rolling around in the mud a lot more!

  • Anonymous

There are also many stories that never should have been reported (at least for more than 5 minutes) if Fox hadn’t created/exaggerated/embellished them.

I’d greatly prefer if they went with “Fairness and Balance” instead of “Fair and Balanced”. Big difference.

I don’t have a clue what MSNBC’s slogan is. I don’t subscribe to the Red or Blue teams. I watch Fox more because of A)Martha MacCallum/Shepherd Smith and B) It’s more influential.

You were caught admitting Faux news is biased just like Chris Wallace and are now trying to fall back on the fair and balanced lie to cover for accidentally telling the truth

“What’s the difference between Rupert Murdoch and [Hustler publisher] Larry Flynt?”

Hey, what a fun game!  What’s the difference between Bill Maher and Richard Nixon?  I mean, they’re both angry, spiteful, sexually frustrated, highly opinionated men who hide their feelings of inadequacy with false bravado, and swear a lot about the people on their “enemies” lists.

  • Anonymous

OH!  I forgot!  They both have big, bulbous noses, too!

  • Kermit

You can kiss your right wing butt  splatboy.  FOX is going down the drain…. and it is long over due.

Murdoch is being exposed as the crook and lair that he is and  that would do anything for a buck.  He can’t stoop much lower then what he has already done.

World dominance of fake news for corporatist to propagandize.  That is what he will be know for.  We should have the jerk exported back to Australia!!  Where they can deal with his crap.

  • Kermit

The difference between Mudroch and Flynt…. simple.  Flint doesn’t have the money…. just a slim  bag trying to make money anyway he can….. If and when he does get rich there would be no difference.  Two sleazy slim bag that make being a whore look like a decent profession.

    Hahaha right.

A corrupt president who uses the machinery of the state to discredit his enemies is *just like* a comedian who makes fun of jackasses like Murdoch for engaging in some of the most unethical behavior in the history of journalism.

  • Anonymous

Haha, like the fake ACORN scandal, and the fake Planned Parenthood scandal, and all of the other imaginary scandals they report on?

  • Anonymous

As Liggy has pointed out, the MSM has ONE agenda–maximizing corporate profits.  Ironically, this agenda lines up far more closely with that of the right than that of the left.

The “liberal” media is nothing but a myth to allow the corporate media to run amok.

  • Anonymous

But can you point to any fake stories that MSNBC has propelled onto the national scene, a la the ACORN “scandal” or the Planned Parenthood “scandal?”

THAT is the difference.  Or one of the many differences.

  • Anonymous

Murdoch almost single-handedly controls the content of the “most watched” MSM outlet in the country.  Flynn doesn’t.

  • Republicans are Liars

Learn how to spell, idiot boy! I think I know where that D@#$ has went in you.

  • Anonymous

Wasn’t saying either side was right or wrong.  It’s just that MSNBC is pretty open about being liberal whereas FOX tends not to be as open about being conservative.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bentleg14 Jerry Jones

Mediaite, more specifically Glenn Davis.  If you have any credibility, you’ll point out the comment uttered by Maher’s guess “I wish Republicans were all fu**ing dead”.  Maher should be pulled off the air for allowing that kind of trash on his show.  He facilitates an environment where that kind of talk is expected and he should be pointed out, ridiculed and shamed for it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bentleg14 Jerry Jones

How about this for balance, in the same segment Maher’s guest uttered “I wish Republicans were all fu*king dead”.

  • Jake

You forgot to mention the birth certificate scandal, Bill Ayers, and my favorite attempt by Fox to engineer a scandal that of Common the rapper. I can’t wait (sigh) to see how the newsroom at Fox attempts to destroy Obama a year from now. If past is precedent, we know it’s going to get very ugly.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bentleg14 Jerry Jones

Before you correct somebody else, learn to speak yourself, dummy!  It isn’t “has went”, it is “has gone”.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bentleg14 Jerry Jones

That’s because people don’t watch liberal trash.  Most of the country isn’t liberal, a plurality is conservative or right-leaning.

Will any heads fall at Fox? I really hope the executives at Fox behaved in a legal, scrupulous manner. But, given the resume of Roger Ailes, a veteran of the Nixon White House, I’m not confident he would overlook a possibility to damage Obama despite the legal ramifications. He has clearly shown he is willing to devote much of the content of his news channel to smearing Obama and the Democrats. All of the fake scandals pushed aggressively prove the real hatred of Obama at Fox news. Did any of the former GOP operatives who run Fox News cross the line at any one point in their investigative journalism of Acorn, Bill Ayers, the birth certificate, or Common the rapper? We’ll know soon enough….

  • Anonymous

Is there a magic button that calls commie cretins to attention? It works well, so many of them are here. Oh yeah, they all want to be journalists — they don’t work, hate success,so just hang here sniping at we of the owner class until they win the lottery. Wasn’t a scandal when Diane Sawyer used a hidden rocket to blow up a car to prove it unsafe. Wasn’t a scandal to forge government documents eh Sam. It is a bit ridiculous to refer to journalism as a profession since the remnants committed suicide in 2008. Maher is their plastic Jesus, Jon Stewart is their tin God, how cute.

  • Anonymous

Yeah.  See, I thought the point of the exercise was to draw a ridiculously tenuous comparison between two completely unrelated subjects for the sake of sensationalism, like a former comedian might do.

As for the most unethical behavior in the history of journalism, your statement assumes that he knew about the phone hacking, which I do not believe has been proven, yet.  And, even if it were, one can make and argument for other examples of unethical behavior in journalism being worse.

  • Anonymous

Sorry.  Not gonna happen. The most I have ever seen of Rachel Maddow is on those maddening MSNBC pop-up ad videos on Mediaite, before I can get them closed and off of my monitor.

  • Anonymous

“Some of” = one of the most egregious examples, not the single most.

And you honestly don’t think Murdoch knew about the thousands of people whose phones have been hacked at his newspapers?  Why on earth, then, did he stand up for the editor at whose hands it was done?  If he had no idea, he should have been more outraged than anyone.

What of the fact that Roger Ailes has been spying on his own journalists stateside?

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2011/apr/19/fox-news-us-press-publishing
    http://www.newser.com/story/116690/roger-ailes-small-town-paper-accuses-him-of-spying.html

This is quite obviously an operating model, not an aberration.  Not that anyone in the “liberal” media cares to connect the dots.

He’s not on the air, he’s on cable.  I was listening to Conservative radio here in Florida that allowed some guy from Arcadia to go on for 20 minutes calling for ‘someone with a rifle’ to ‘do what needed to be done’ during the President’s visit to a new solar field.  Facililtating a negative environment is business as usual in the Conservative television and radio world.

My question is, would ANY Republican F_ _K that pasty white Coulter? Between her and Bachman’s reptilian eyes, it’s a wonder more people don’t think conservative women aren’t bred in an institution somewhere.

  • Tony

The main difference I can see is that since Flynt is a liberal, Maher would actually prefer to teabag him versus Murdoch. Now IF he did THAT on his pathetic show, he might get more than his lame 500,000 or so viewers. Are we still talking about this trash?

  • Crwcpa

    “Reportedly…claiming…alleged…said to be…rumor…anonymous former employees…”

There’s some solid, fact-based reporting.  Sounds pretty open-and-shut, alright.

Eh.  I’ll wait for all the evidence to come out.

Thank You so much. I liken liberalism to gayhood, you are probably born with it and are seldom ever cured. The difference, one can’t tell if a person is gay unless he or she chooses to make it known, progressives can’t hide the vapid empty stare. If the gay folks leave me alone I usually like them, commies never leave me alone and the only use for them is target practice.

When we label a show “pathetic” or some other derogatory label is obviously a function of where we sit on the line of political discourse.  As best I can tell, Maher’s show is the only widely followed liberal program available.  There seem to be dozens of conservative and ultra conservative programs, few that show a sense of humor like Maher does.  In this great republic of ours, surly there is room for both.

I believe you are way off base criticizing Ann Coulter and Michele Bachman for their looks, any more than you would criticize Mitch McConnell for looking so goofy.  Though I disagree with most of her opinions, Ann Coulter is bright.  Sarah Palin is intellectually lazy (Paul Revere rode to warn the British) and Michele Bachman is not that bright and just plain mean.  Of could those are just my opinions, I could be wrong.

Who’s reallysurprised that Murdoch — the dodgy Australian whose lawyers somehow turned him into an American so he could set up his anti-immigrant hate channel Fox — got caught out in all kinds of felonies in Britain??   Of course he claims he didn’t know: it was all done by the underlings, who are supposed to take the rap now —  oh sure, we all believe Murdoch did not know, did not approve.

Now, do we believe that the Murdoch and his organization were in the habit of breaking the law, hacking phones, and bribing the police  to hush it up — but only in  Britain, not America?  How likely does any rational person think that is ??

What’s the difference between Rupert Murdoch and Larry Flynt?  Easy, Rachel Maddow looks up to pornographer Flynt, and invites him on her show as an “expert” on ethical issues.  Murdoch, in contrast, is not a pornographer, so he gets smeared and attacked on MSNBC every day of the week — despite the obvious conflict of interest involved in MSNBC attacking the boss of their more successful competitor.

    Next question, Bill?

newscorp committed CRIMES.  no one forced them to do it, its not some dreamed up fantasy land like tax cuts pay for themselves or glenn beck is a truth teller or whatever other delusions conservatives buy into.

Let us be VERY VERY CLEAR. Rupert Murdoch sat on the Board of
Directors of Philip Morris Tobacco Company during a known exact span of
time. The directors direct the company and are LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE for
corporate criminal behaviors. During the Murdoch reign of directing
the tobacco mafia serial murder corporation Murdoch directed that
$75,000,000 per year be diverted to advertising in the pages of
Murdoch-owned TV-Guide, where families let their children look up the
broadcast times of Sesame Street and Barney the Dinosaur. During the
time of Murdoch’s directing the serial murder corporation it committed
thousands of felony violations of federal laws, for which it was
convicted in US Federal Court. Therefore, the LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE
directors committed those crimes over an extended period of time which
includes the entire tenure of Rupert Murdoch. Among the RICO Organized
Crime Racketeering acts directed by Rupert Murdoch was the secret Swiss
bank numbered accounts payoffs of felony fraud science deceptions
which deceived smokers into their graves — 3,000 Americans were
tricked to death every single day that Rupert Murdoch directed the
organized crime tobacco mafia company. When the trials were over,
Rupert Murdoch hired at raises in pay serial murderer top executives
from the PM company into his News Corpse RICO organization. This is not
whether Murdoch hacked a dead girl’s voicemail — Rupert Murdoch
himself attempted to murder that girl with cigarette addiction through
advertising to kids in TV-Guide to replace the 3,000 killed today and
the 3,000 who will be killed tomorrow.

It should be pointed out that Rupert Murdoch was also director during a
known exact specific span of time, of Charles Koch co-founded Cato
Institute, sitting on the Board of Directors and legally responsible for
crimes of the corporation in a char at the table with David Koch,
co-director of Cato. It was during this time that Junkman Steve Moaloy,
whom was involved in felony frauds for the PM company, and employed by
Cato Institute paid with Philip Morris felony fraud money, began
broadcasting on Fox News channel. The Koch brothers are organized, and
they have been fined $55,000,000.00 (yes, that is $55 MILLION DOLLARS,
with an M) in criminal fines for poisonng the air, waters and soils of
six of the United States. The Koch Brothers have used their front
organizations for tobacco frauds as proved in multiple Federal courts,
and have usually had a Philuip Morris Vice President on the oard of
Directors of Cato Institute (besides also Rupert Murdoch directing).
David Koch’s Reason Foundation had American Tobacco Company-heir Gordon
Gray on the board of directors. The Koch Brother RICO racketeering
operations are found to be deeply involved in the tobacco mafia serial
    murders for decades.

Maher forgets that there is another big difference between Murdoch and Flynt. . .Flynt seeks and prints evidence of hypocrisy in politicians and other public figures, but publishes nothing of the sort as News of the World has, such as the cystic fibrosis of the Prime Minister’s son.

for all his devotion to sex, Larry Flynt has ethics, and better morals than Murdoch’s news empire.
