Sen. Chuck Schumer: ‘I’m Still Willing To Look At Nuclear’ Energy

Video
» 29 comments

On Meet The Press, Chuck Todd, sitting in for David Gregory, asked Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer about his recent support of nuclear energy and whether in light of the horrific ongoing events in Japan his opinion has changed. Schumer however was not ready to back off from his past statements until we all see how the situation in Japan develops.

Schumer stressed “we do have to free ourselves of independence from foreign oil” and declared that even despite the fears in Japan, “I’m still willing to look at nuclear” so long as it is done “safely and carefully.” With the dangers of nuclear power now prominently featured in ongoing coverage of Japan’s earthquake aftermath, it certainly will be interesting to see if and how the political discussion regarding our own commitment to nuclear energy changes.

    Not Chucky but many NO-NUKES lefties are exploiting his catastrophe before we even know all the details about what went wrong with these reactors in Japan.

    just proves none of you righties will be happy until there is a (R) next to EVERY member of Congress. I guess that would be freedom and democracy at it’s best for you.

    Right now we can drill for oil . Even Bill Clinton says oil drilling permit delays are ridiculous .

    Details? Here, have some details. As it turns out, the dangers of nuclear power have been mitigated exceptionally well at Fukushima.

    You know how it isn’t in catastrophic meltdown? It’s never going to be.

    Duh, a huge earthquake hit Japan. How hard is that to figure out? Are you still waiting to find out what happened to the WTC towers?

    You should be proud of Chuckey, he has proclaimed that HE is willing to still look a nuke power. I don’t think we could have survived without his word on high.

    You need to find a new phony name to hide behind, everybody already knows all the comments with this name are going to be stupid.

    If the public elected only “R”s into office, why wouldn’t that be democratic?

    If that’s the will of the people, how is that “bad?”

    Instead of irrational fear how about a few facts:

    “In 2006, 47 American miners died in coal mining accidents; many others were killed by mining-related diseases like black lung and cancer. Add to this untold deaths from the sooty pollution put out by coal, and you have a fairly large number.

    Many more people each year die from oil-related accidents, primarily on ocean-based drilling rigs. In addition, with oil there’s always the risk of a terrible leak that can lead to poisoning of the ocean and the death of a wide swath of marine life. Oil is also associated with greenhouse gases, refinery fires, and deaths from pollution — not clean energy.

    Hydroelectric power, which is perhaps the cleanest bulk power available, has a rate of approximately 2 ½ times the deaths related to coal in accidents — so over a hundred deaths a year related to hydroelectric power in the US.

    But in the United States, there has never been a death related to a nuclear power accident — not at a plant, not due to a leak, not due to the disposal of nuclear waste.

    Put it another way; worldwide, for the electricity gained, per billion megawatt-hours, there have been:

    * 101 hydroelectric deaths.

    * 39 coal-related deaths

    * 10 gas-related deaths

    * Less than one nuclear-related death — and that’s in spite of the Chernobyl accident. ”

    When this lefty tells you he wants to look at nuclear energy don’t believe him. Acorn Chuck is in for another 6 though. Acorn Chuck Schumer wants Acorn to give him more awards for letting them throw elections this year. Last time he slithered like a snake out the back door so Fox’es Griff Jenkins couldn’t report it. He knows the fringe media with Chunky Katie will look the other way. Sarah Palin knows the 3 branches of the government includes the Judiciary unlike this Acorn dodo.

    I sang about him in a song called teapartiers I can’t hear you at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJfboOindCo

    Here’s a verse

    Join Acorn once every 4 years vote a 1000 times a day
    Obama , Schumer , Holder will keep the justice department away
    Acorn Chuck says don’t worry about the voters we only need 51
    Daffy,Goofy, Mickey, Minnie will vote for me when I run
    The president thinks that kids should work hard in school
    He wants Acorn at the table they think 13 year old hookers are cool

    Hey guys if you fought at Falluja
    hope you have about 5 grand to spare
    that’s’ about what is’s going to cost you
    If your between 20 or 30 for Obamacare

    Sometimes Sen Schumer is a schmuck although a number of commentators who would normally hate Schumer agree with him on this one point. On the other hand, what have all those do-gooders and lefties, most of whom were the most ardent anti-nuclear activists, got for their pains? Derision from mostly uninformed, unsympathetic people. Until the Japan quake plans were well underfoot in this country to resume building many more nuclear plants. Fortunately, this is now a dead issue. It would be great to see all you smart asses out there really start pushing for alternative sources. if you weren’t so bamboozled by the pro “Drill baby drill” people you would understand that we need the help of the government to develope alternative energy sources since the short-sighted private sector can’t or is unwilling to do it. Many of you seem to be completely caught up in this extreme capitalistic mindset that relegates government to be just the handmaiden of oil companies and awful polluters like the Koch Brothers. A little study of history will demonstrate that the government has helped make a number of break throughs in science, technology and medicine, including nuclear power!

    First Bill Maher denounces Islam and the Koran and now Chuck is down with nuclear energy? Did that earthquake shake everyone into an alter ego?
