Gawker Founder Nick Denton Confirms He’s Filing for Bankruptcy Today

nickdenton-e1458682102710Nick Denton, the embattled founder of Gawker, has confirmed today that is he filing for bankruptcy.

“Gawker Media Group’s resilient brands and people will thrive under new ownership,” he took to Twitter to say.

Denton’s second Tweet embedded above is in direct reference to Peter Thiel, the founder of PayPal who funded the lawsuit of Hulk Hogan against the media giant earlier this year. Thiel has had a personal grievance against Gawker of sorts ever since the website famously outed him in 2007.

Hogan sued Gawker to the tune of $140 million awarded by a jury when the site published a portion of a sex tape that featured the former wrestling star. Gawker is set to be sold at auction later this month.

“Mr. Denton and Mr. [AJ] Daulerio’s legal maneuvering is nearing an end. It is time for them to take responsibility for what they’ve done,” said David Houston, Hogan’s lawyer Monday.
