Jon Stewart Cites Sarah Palin’s ‘Boo-Gate’ Mistreatment As A Need To Restore Sanity

video

In case you haven’t heard, Jon Stewart is planning a big rally in Washington D.C. for October 30th, calling it the “Rally to Restore Sanity”. On last night’s The Daily Show, the “fake news” host used two recent items in the news as examples for the nation’s dire need to restore sanity: Rep. Alan Grayson’s dishonest attack ad toward his opponent “Taliban Dan” Webster, and the fake booing controversy surrounding Sarah Palin‘s recent appearance on Dancing With The Stars. Stewart seemed put back in pointing out how Palin had been mistreated, saying “don’t make me defend her.”

Mr. Stewart summed up the absurd media coverage of Sarah Palin’s appearance on DWTS (a story that Mediaite was all to happy to cover) saying “coming up next, anecdotal evidence: extrapolatable? Or meaning less-full?” It was a rather surprising segment because Stewart’s two examples included vilifying the actions of a Democratic official and defending Sarah Palin from unfair attacks. Proof that Jon Stewart is not the knee-jerk liberal that some are all to eager claim.

Perhaps the funniest line was his replaying of Arianna Huffington‘s pledge from the previous evening to bus anyone from NY to the D.C. rally. Stewart said “I hope they’re not just embedding a link to Greyhound. I hope they’re not bus aggregators.”

Azarkhan, you need to realize that one man’s lies are simply everything one woman says. However, the Drop Out Governor may having someone fast on her heels. Randi the Witch can outlie the Drop Out Govenor any time, any place.

Though I’ll agree with the general premise of Colby’s conclusion yesterday — Arianna may have decided to offer rides prior to her on-camera appearance — it looked more to me that she had only thought of the idea prior to the announcement and hadn’t actually done anything, except possibly make a phone call and tell someone to send a few texts.

My guess is that her people and his people have friendly relations, so perhaps when they got to the TDS offices and heard some of the stories about logistics, she may have decided to step into the fray. Of course, she may have just offered off-the-cuff in response to Jon’s pre-show Q&A or maybe, she had thought of the idea on her flight out, but the announcement wasn’t overly planned. Otherwise, she or Jon would’ve given a website, Twitter feed or something. (He didn’t even give her mainsite URL during the entire show)

Which brings me around to concluding that Jon’s needle may have been more along the lines of trying to keep her on the stick, or an attempt to keep the offer real. Once again, he didn’t any contact info and the Huffington Post wasn’t referred to as a sponsor, nor did he declare her site as an official conduit for logistics from New York or anywhere else.

Beck’s rally had Tea Party groups, local Republican organizations and churches crowdsourcing transportation; Farrakhan had local chapters of his and affiliated groups arranging for buses, but there’s no national, non-profit backbone to The Daily Show as a commercial enterprise. Sure, the Democrats might not object if their college chapters were to arrange transportation, but it’s not a party event and unless they were to act in conjunction with the College Republicans, it would sort of run counter to the rally’s theme.

Right now, logistics are largely being left to the individual. Social networking is a way for people to pool resources and the Huffington Post is but one tool in the networking apparatus. It’ll be nice, if Arianna does step up and provide buses for the handful of people in New York and she seems to be headed in that direction.

And, Jon’s poke may have helped keep her on track, but I still don’t see an official relationship and because I doubt she’s going to finance a ride from Omaha, it’ll be nice for those who live in one of the few cities, she decides to serve.

So, this is a vital issue to you? I should be most surprised if anyone on reality television would boo the Drop Out Governor. We’re not dealing with the crème de la crème of American society.

PS) It occurs to me that by focusing on the Arianna thing and the overall commercial for the rally, I’m more commenting on Colby’s yesterday post, so it’d only be fair to repeat his link.

As for the remainder of the post — the script for the advertisement — “Boo-gate” was over the top and Grayson is a clown. I’d call him, the far-left Michele Bachmann.

According to Robert, all of these people make up less than 1% of the population. Hardly worth worrying about.

Patsy knows from his extensive dealings with the privileged on behalf of low class hicks who make his heart bleed…

  • paulmdoro

Booing people is rude and there are certain occasions where one needs to put aside political differences and act civilized. Yelling “you lie” to the president is rude. Booing someone supporting their child on a reality show intended to be harmless entertainment is rude.

  • writer

Cecilia, you need to qualify that. Robert’s heart does bleed for the less fortunate, but it depends on where they live, and what they’re living in, and where they shop, and what they eat, and……..

Goodness knows Stewart has a point. I think perhaps the internet has made things worse since people act there in ways they would never dream of acting face-to-face.

However, the last time Stewart went on a campaign against the level of nasty public discourse, he ended up calling Tucker Carlson a “dick” on live tv for challenging him.

Here’s hoping Stewart can get through the rally without offering to the liberal gods some sort of human sacrifice….

I wouldn’t be too offended Michelle-in-Utah. Throughout the course of history a class of people has flocked to public executions, gladiator fights, bear-baiting, K-Mart grand openings and Beckerhead rallies. Reality television is in the same league as are its fans. Frankly, it makes it possible for the rest of us to avoid crowds of women in curlers, men in gimmee hats, screaming brats and body odors.

For anyone who watches the Daily Show, Jon calling out Dems as well as Reps is nothing new. Why is it so hard for people on this comment board to understand that you can lean one way politically, but still see the faults in politicians on “your own side?” I keep hearing comments about “slavishly following” “Dear Leader” etc. If I’m able to see the good and bad in my boyfriend, why can’t I also see the good and bad in politicians? Wake up, people, the world is in color, stop watching Black/White TV (pundits).

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

@Rogue-Comic: Seriously? A few weeks ago, I went on something of a Kmart mini-tour and I found most of the stores clean and they had adequate staff to help. Of course they may be a little “uptown” for some people’s tastes and they didn’t have quite the stock, but I’d say that overall it was a pleasant experience.

Heck, Kmart isn’t even tangentially related because one of Ms. Palin’s accomplishments during her term as Mayor was drawing a Walmart to Wasilla and if I’m not mistaken, she even officiated at an in-store wedding ceremony as part of its grand opening.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

Correction: There shouldn’t have been a question mark after “seriously” because I meant it as a statement of support. (Still wishing for the ability to edit)

Coby Hall you are an idiot! If Jon Stewart is a “fake news” host, what might you call beck, O’Reilly, Hannity, Olberman and the rest? Kinda biased and slanted or do you drink or smoke too much weed? Stewart is at least funny and he does get to the point without lies and bullshit. Stewart is what Fox claims they are (which is a joke), Stewart is fair and balanced, when is the last time any of the above group has criticized a conservative, Republican, Teas Bagger? I don’t have the time to waste on watching Fox’s bullshit but I would guess in the range of almost never to never. You should be selling newspapers on the corner of the avenue, you don’t deserve this much of a public ear. or eyes for that matter. Jerkoff!

Wow that’s pretty interesting and could have been really good campaign ammo, but Grayson kinda blew it with that ad. He gave Webster an out when he took those words out of context and went the extra mile to use Taliban.
Maybe he can use the controversy to talk about Webster’s ties but a lot of people won’t listen.

Um….maybe you ought to watch the video before you decide to post. Jon never said she was booed. He said he didn’t give a fuck if she was. It doesn’t matter. So, it’s not so much that Jon is dishonest as it is your rush to condemn someone when you don’t really know what you’re talking about. You know, that whole morals and scruples thing.

CosmosDan: I have no feelings for a person who would stand up for Anything that GRAYSON says. All he ever does is trash a person who does not agree with him. Actually, I really don’t know anything he believes in, except that he is the only person who knows everything, so listen to ME! I hope he is not in Congress any longer because I love the state of Florida and he is a very bad name to connect with it.
