President Obama Brings Bill Clinton In To Talk Tax Plan…And Then Leaves To Go To A Christmas Party!

video

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” said MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur after cutting back following a press conference on the tax plan. It had begun with a surprise appearance by President Obama who then brought in a further surprise, none other than Bill Clinton, to help him explain the deal. However, after introducing Clinton and letting him begin to talk, Obama suddenly announced that he was leaving for a Christmas party and vanished, letting Clinton talk for 25 more minutes as if it was 1996! I guess it could have been worse. Obama could have left to go play hoops.

Seriously, what was the thinking here? This has to be one of the worst PR moves in the entirety of the administration. Obviously, Clinton is probably a more popular Democratic figure right now, but they had to imagine this would hurt Obama. I mean, letting a former president explain your tax bill while you head to a Christmas party? A Christmas party?

Check out four clips from MSNBC below: Obama introducing Clinton, Clinton talking about the Tax Bill, Obama leaving after ABC Jake Tapper’s question and MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur’s shocked response afterwards:

Aw ,gee . Why does he hafta hang around and listen to all that grown-up talk ? Got go out and play and stuff .

“…And Then Leaves To Go To A Christmas Party!”

The priorities of The(shallow)ONE have never been in doubt.
On the other hand, when an incompetent bozo stands next to a competent professional, people see the difference. So can you really blame obozo for wanting to get away as fast as possible?

  • Just4thefax

Fact: Even Clinton was trying to help the Messiah on this one because he knows if they don’t pull the trigger now the republicans write the whole new bill for it next year without the crap!

  • ModerateMan

Christmas Party on December 10th? He WAS totally going to “hoop it up” and work on his mid-range jumper.

  • da-wdc

Oh, come on. He’s joking around. He was going to stand there silently as Bill Clinton talked? You know how long that can take once Clinton starts talking. Now THAT would be awkward. (Note, I am joking too – I like them both, I’d vote for Clinton for a 3rd term if I could.)

Is this the best time to finally prove you’re Christian.

    Wow. What’s your problem? Unnecessary.

  • BFD

I’m pretty sure Obama has been on TV every day explaining the Tax Plan. Let Bill have a shot at it.

This wasn’t a press conference for the American people, it was for the progressives, who are pretty mad at Obama right now. (Cenk Uygur being one of them)

Also, it would have looked even weirder to have a joint press conference with a present and former president.

It was exactly the right thing to do.

  • lane

Bad PR, bad optics, but kind of funny too. Clinton seemed genuinely surprised.

    Clinton looked great though.

  • WildMan

Between the 2 I’ll take Clinton every day of the week. Why is Obama still in our White House? The guy is in so far over his head that it has become a sad day for America. Can’t we just give Obama the next two years off so he can go play and America can get down to business. At least Clinton was able to work with Republicans and Independents and it resulted in a surplus and balanced budget.

Let Obama, Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz and O.J. Simpson have a great time as a perfect foursome on a golf course in Saudi Arabia for the next 2 years. Then they can ride off into the sunset as we forget all about them.

  • cjd ohio 1

thanks BFD for telling me it wasn’t for americans……………..it was for the progressives ….how nice

  • SpineCrusher

Not only is BO punting on 3rd down…he’s now bringing in a backup quarterback so he can head to the Christmas party.

Glad he’s got his priorities straight.

One less Independent who will be organizing for him come 2011.

OK OK i’m no obama fan but while this looks BAD, it shouldnt be a huge deal. they had a meeting and he had a christmas party to attend afterwards (like all presidents do).
he had a meeting with clinton that the press has been pretty curios about.
he brought out clinton to talk to the press because we all know where he stands on the issue.
its the far left dems who are holding up the bill now, by the way.
he ran out of time and left clinton and gibbs to finish up the presser so he can attend a christmas party.

i have a christmas party to go to tonight, by the way. bye!

    Hillary was right!
The phone DID RING AT 3AM,,,
a number of times, this President WAS NOT READY for prime time,
along with his Chicago thugs that couldn’t shoot straight..
THE Clintons had to come to the rescue, be it today to discuss Policy
or during Election … How humiliating..How utterly stupid…
Obviously i never liked this President, but this is way over the line, even for these morons

  • da-wdc

Obama just plain doesn’t strike me as the type who would act out of desperation. Quite the opposite. He strikes me as confident that he’s right and got the best deal he could (I disagree, but anyway), that he’s happy to let Bill talk in favor – it doesn’t cross his mind that anybody would think it was bad optics. That’s my impression. As a former diehard Hillary for Prez supporter, I’m enjoying this turn of events, but my memories of the primary campaign tell me that there’s no way Obama would turn to Clinton for help if the situation was really one of desperation. No way.

  • LibertySister

It would be great to see if Obama just said “okay Tag. I am am done… Bill will the president for the remaining two years” and then walks off.

This just blew my mind . I never voted for Clinton . But I got to hand it to him . Hell Clinton even told the left to remember the conservative’s were giving into the unemployment extension . Everybody is giving and that is good . Partisans being bi-partisons .
He so up-staged Obama . Like he had to come be President for a day to wrap up a deal . This shows the empty suit Obama is . And just lame .

  • Rescuedog

I saw this live, and it was one of the nuttiest things I’ve ever seen on television. White House insiders have been telling reporters on background that Obama is more disengaged than ever. It is clear from today’s debacle that Obama has no interest in doing the job he took an oath to do. If we are to believe Valerie Jarrett, it is because he is “bored”, but it’s more than that. I think he holds everyone around him, everyone in Congress, everyone in the media, and the American public in general, in contempt. He thinks everyone else is beneath him and not grateful enough for his exalted presence in the White House.

This is a big deal. Think of how it looks to our allies and enemies alike for out president to be so uninterested in doing his job. Think of how it looks to the markets (especially the buyers of our bonds), who have the power to jack up our interest rates. I am as conservative as they come, but right now, I don’t give a crap about the taxes. The overarching problem is Obama’s detachment and apathy, and it is quickly turning into a crisis for this country. I hope Obama takes this weekend to think about what he wants to do. If he decides he can’t change his mindset or his ways, he needs to gracefully step aside and let Joe Biden finish out his term. The voters can clean up the mess in 2012, as we started to do in 2010.

I thought “Zippy” was about to answer that question of what they* had discussed earlier, while he leaned forward.
Clinton did appear to be shocked when “Zippy” took leave… I don’t know exactly what was originally planned, but it did, sure seem like Clinton was not expecting what went down…Just by the look in his face..

Strategically it appears to have been a mistake because though Bill adds a certain amount of credibility, a depth of knowledge and can talk the pants off of anyone, the walkout seems to be getting all of the press and those on the left who oppose the deal aren’t Bill Clinton fans, anyway.

As for the “unprecedented”, I can’t recall if I have a mental image of Obama excusing himself from a previous press conference, but I want to say that it was GWB, but I’ve been unable to fashion to right kind of search to make something obvious come up in three screens.

Yeah, it is such a big deal that by Monday the press will have moved on to new and fresher meat.

When are you teabloggers gonna understand that the American people don’t give one shit about stuff like this.
They only care about working together to move this country forward, which in this instance is exactly what Obama did.

You people don’t realize this is a bigger plus for Obama than it ever will be for the GOP, even with all the whining the far left is doing.
As a matter of fact, it is BECAUSE of that whining that this will really help Obama.
He may have alienated the far left and far right, but independents like this deal.
I predict his approval rating will go up a point or two in the coming weeks. :-)

That’s an interesting take. I thought it looked bad. I sometimes think Obama often misses the importance of appearance. Then again, I take it this was an impromptu conference. I’m thinking Obama’s reaction is “What molehill are they making a mountain out of this time? I think a better strategy is for Clinton to make a few stops at news shows to make his point, or hold a separate news conference, but maybe his schedule wouldn’t permit it. Clinton even seemed a little surprised that Obama was leaving.

my political memory goes back to the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debates, and I’ve never seen anything like this either.

to pretend that “Obama had talked enough and was just giving Bill his chance,” as someone above noted, is ludicrous. but forget why they decided to pull this. it was for any reason a really really stupid move.

comparing Obama to Clinton does Obama no favors. Clinton is a master of the art of engaging people: he’s also TRULY brilliant, as opposed to this mythologized intellect Obama supposedly has but never shows. in 30 seconds at that podium, he radiated more knowledge and competence than Obama ever has.

I know of two occasions on which Dear Leader has pulled similar moves: (1) he left a private fundraising dinner without even eating, saying he had to go home and walk the dog; and (2) he left a presser somewhere in Asia (?) saying he had a plane to catch or something similar. So not really unprecedented. He doesn’t seem to care about optics at all.

Maybe the fail is ours for allowing ourselves to be distracted by petty bullshit presented by the press.

It was not a scheduled press conference that Obama bailed on. He and Clinton being there was a surprise that they decided on after their meeting, probably because we only have a few days left to reach an agreement before the tax cuts expire for working folks.
While I think it was politically a bad choice it’s pretty small potatoes when we look at real issues that matter to real people. Hardly a massive fail.

  • LOGICandREASON

If anyone ever wanted to know the definition of INEXPERIENCE, this White House press briefing is best definition so far.(i.e. without considering the $3 trillion dollars in new debt spent in just 21 months, and a 9.8% unemployment to show for it)

And according to this report, the former President “took over the podium”; which kind of reminds me of the saying: “Never send a Boy to do a Man’s job”

I hope Americans never make this mistake EVER again!

And if Americans are ever going to vote for a totally inexperienced LEADER, it better be one that at least knows the job description, understands and has respect for the US constitution and traditional values that made America the world’s greatest country. If the founders all down to Reagan were Obama-like, the USA would be similar to China now, or Cuba and North Korea, with full Marxist systems in place.

By the way, imagine with whom Obama seeks political refuge: BJ Clinton (Blow Job Clinton or Bill Jefferson Clinton); a person without shame of his own; a President who treated America with such contempt and disrespect, having sexual encounters(and first lying blatantly about them) in the same office Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan once served the country they loved so much.

Lewinsky had nine sexual encounters with Bill Clinton as follows:

    * November 15, 1995, in the private study of the Oval Office
    * November 17, 1995, while Bill Clinton was on the phone with a member of Congress
    * December 31, 1995, in a White House study
    * January 7, 1996, in the Oval Office
    * January 21, 1996, in the hallway by the private study next to the Oval Office
    * February 4, 1996, while Clinton was meeting in the Oval Office
    * March 31, 1996, in the hallway near the study of the Oval Office
    * February 28, 1997, near the Oval Office, when the blue dress stains were created
    * March 29, 1997 (Clinton denied that this day’s encounter actually happened.)

According to her published schedule, First Lady Hillary Clinton was at the White House for at least some portion of five of these stated days.

When a sitting US President seeks political refuge in one of the only two US Presidents that was ever impeached, then it tells you a lot about the type of administration currently running the Country. It is like George W. Bush seeking political refuge in Richard Nixon.

Jon Bershad wrote: “Obviously, Clinton is probably a more popular Democratic figure right now” Well, I don’t dispute that fact Jon, but then it tells you a lot about the Democrat electorate and their base of “dummy votes”.

I am grateful that God himself is Conservative, I wonder how the earth would have been like if he were a Social Liberal.

Let’s see how the Left likes it when we apply all of their usual interpretations of everybody who disagrees with the President. Here goes:

Congressional Democrats are HOLDING OBAMA CAPTIVE

Congressional Democrats are THE PARTY OF NO

Dealing with Congressional Democrats is like DEALING WITH TERRORISTS

The Congressional Democrats who oppose Obama are demonstrating RACISM STRAIGHT UP.

Congressional Democrats HAVE NO SOLUTIONS AND ARE JUST BEING OBSTRUCTIONIST.

    Etc. etc.

I learned all these things from the hosts on MSNBC, who have taught me all the possible reasons why a politician might oppose the President.

  • Cheesecakecrush

Palin leaves to save her state hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in ethics complaints charges, Obama leaves mid conference for a party.

Can anybody tell me where to go to find the entire 25 minute video of Clinton taking questions??? I mean I’m a Conservative republican but as far as Democrats go, Bill Clinton is my hero! I mean he balanced the budget and got a BJ while talking on the phone in the oval office to some other country’s leader. Talk about a multi-tasker…kudos.

  • Mr.Papshmer

Seriously man, are there any more people that that think that this asshole’s anything more than a minor league chump? Jesus Christ, even Bill Clinton looks like Abraham Lincoln compared to this fucking douche. Shit man, are you libs / progs embarrassed or what?

The Far Left complains, but mark my words, after these tax cuts are extended, Obama’s approval rating will rise, and the economy will start to recover. Showing Clinton-esque independence from the ultra-left statists, adopting a truly bipartisan stance, and letting people keep more of their hard-earned money — these will all be winners. It’s not even close….

The fact that the ideologues on MSNBC don’t see this just confirms the point. Remember that Rachel, Keith, Ed and Chris are the same people who said that the stimulus would work, and that Obama would get rewarded by voters for forcing through the unpopular healthcare bill. They have so little comprehension of the voters’ mood that one can only laugh at their off-the-wall and invariably wrong prognostications.

  • Truth

Did any one really see the whole thing? I did. Once they got past the the tax questions they started talking about Bill and what Bill is doing. Bill loves to talk. At that point Obama added no value to the conversation. It was much like around the drinking fountain conversation. It was not a formal press conference. I’m glad to see Obama seeking the advice of others. It shows he heard the voice of the people on November 2nd. I’m sadden by the fact that MSNBC may such a big deal of it. I’m sure Hannity will cease is opportunity tonight on his show as well.

Shows you who runs the White House. His wife. Clinton looked relieved and seemed to get down to business when BO left.

Something else different. Obama is worried about getting crap from Michelle if he arrives a few minutes late for her Christmas Party. Clinton doesn’t know and doesn’t want to know where Hillary is. There are more important things going on.

As much as he is like a fish out of water in the presidency I actually feel sorry for the guy. Is there anyway Obama can quit early?

This is an interesting event, especially given the recent conversations that the Presidency is too big for just one man. Obama has practically allowed Pelosi and Reid to govern this country, since taking office, and he brings in Bill Clinton to hopefully prop him up, while, he, Obama, has participated mostly in the ‘fun’ side of being president. Now Obama has come to fully realize, that those 2 old ugly bats, Pelosi and Reid, could cost him in 2012, and he wants to kick them to the curb. Good luck with that, Obama. Those 2 old bats and their handful of fringe left buddies, are going to fight every step of the way, to maintain their control. Great entertainment. Pelosi is one scorned almost ex-Maj. leader. LOL.

  • CosmosDan

Thought about this overnight. My initial reaction was “Holy Crap that was a bad call” because it sure doesn’t look presidential. I read some comments over at HuffPo and here,

Yes, superficially it looks bad and may have been a bad call when it comes to appearances. For a lot of average citizens appearances do matter but let’s face it. It’s just superficial.

I’ve heard and read several comments saying that now everyone will be focusing on this incident rather than focusing on the substance of what Bill had to say, as if that’s Obama’s fault. I’m thinking it’s probably the media’s fault and partially our fault as well. Rather than focus on the issue and the details we’d rather focus on superficial bullshit. The media dishes it up and we talk about it for a few days and then they and we move on to the next superficial bullshit. Just as BFD correctly called it the first time.
Are we going to remain that juvenile, and be distracted by every jangle of some new set of keys?

So a somewhat crucial issue that will affect a lot of hard working folks is being dealt with, and Obama takes a meeting with a former president to try and resolve it. They decide, right or wrong, to have an impromptu press conference and since the goal is for Bill to try and persuade the Dems objecting to the deal, that it’s the best they’re going to get considering political realities, Obama decides to keep his previous engagement.
Was it ideal? No. Still, it’s superficial bullshit in the grand scheme of things.

American business used to be about making money. But for the last 15 or more years, Big Business has been quietly changing its emphasis, and the net image is the 2 kinds of Marxism: cultural and economic (wealth redistribution).
Here in the US we had the CRA and its nefarious effects, and many conservatives continue to say this was a top-down imposition by government. I say hogwash.
There were plenty such policies imposed by banks and companies themselves that followed a clear-cut leftist pattern in terms of both the run of the mill wealth redistribution and cultural Marxism. For example I checked out the web sites of many of the institutions that were seen as being in trouble, and all of them had suspicious looking giveaway policies. These were not standard old-fashioned children’s and orphans funds by any means. A lot of the money was going to organizations like the Rainbow Coalition, Gay Olympics, scholarships for minorities (no whites need apply), anti-global warming and feminist organizations — to anyone but the truly needy. Some, like Ford, openly supported gay marriage. despite the protests of millions of customers.
The CEOs and higher-ups were also heavily involved in such “charity” organizations. Some had started their own. Again, nothing down-homey sounding like help for the poor and fatherless or scholarships for achievers. Not even close.
These CEOs were clearly far-left activists and it was very obvious that none of them gave a rat’s patootey about whether the company made money. They were preoccupied with pleasing interest groups, far-left ones. It was only a matter of time before this all collapsed. It had to with all those termites in the foundation. The fact that even one company or bank got public funds is a slap in the face to every working American. We ought to all be beyond mad, seething, ready to tear their walls down — Bastille mad.
The many companies targeted by organizations like the Family Research Council and the American Family Association because of anti-Christian and pro-gay activism were the biggest companies in the US. Ford, Target, Home Depot, Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonald’s, etc.
    Many are still at it.
This is why I have always insisted that free-market capitalism is dead.
People on the far left deliberately and quietly jockeyed for high positions in business and finance and took over the market in hopes of capturing it and forcing their clients into submission. Only the family organizations helped back some of them down, but even they were not entirely above board, having received large donations from RINO candidates like Mitt.
So even if you look only at US companies and banks, it is clear that there is a concerted effort to take over the country for the 2 main goals of Marxism: wealth distribution and the elimination of Christian values, including family values that are not strictly associated with this one religion but have been hallmarks of civilization itself.
But if the US situation is clear enough proof of a Marxist tone, this is further highlighted by a quick look at Europe: The Redcar steel plant in the UK was shut down through government shenanigans and moved to India, where UK taxpayers, after losing 7500 jobs at Redcar, were forced to pay the owners almost a billion dollars in carbon credits (because it is alleged the new plant will be slightly more efficient and burn less carbon).
Long before Greece’s economy started to fail, the EU knew that its socialist practices (such as retirement before the age of 60) were irresponsible. In fact, I believe Greece was warned. Yet when Greece applied for membership into the EU, they were admitted — over a few muted protests — and then continued unabated the practices that led to their current situation. At one point a few years ago, they surpassed the limit of public indebtedness and just kept going. The EU turned a blind eye. Not because they were trying not to believe it. They had engineered the collapse. Their PURPOSE is wealth redistribution. The richest Greek, a billionaire, made a cool billion euros on the bailout deal.
Anyone in the EU who had looked at Greece’s books shortly after they joined the EU had to have seen they were headed for disaster. The same applies to Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Italy.
Why were they allowed to drift away from the founding economic principles?
I defy anyone to say it was an accident or that the EU was not keeping close enough tabs on them.
The current bailouts, paid for mostly by Germany and to some extent by other rich countries like the UK, are wealth redistribution on perhaps the grandest scale ever seen and it was no accident.
Worse, the EU Parliament keeps making laws that are more and more draconian, targeting Christian speech. Almost no one in Europe dares to sully a homosexual or suggest that homosexuality is not godly or not natural. The Association of Evangelicals caved on that issue. And on the issue of Islamization. What could be more obviously anti-Christian than the importation of millions (now ca. 56 mil) of Muslims who hate Christians and European civilization? When the Muslims hold a rally and throw stones or hurl insults at Europeans, esp Jews, and when the police are called, they almost invariably wind up arresting non-Muslims who complain the loudest because they have been assaulted by the Muslims.
Some schools in Germany are intolerable for native German kids, who are constantly spit at, insulted, physically abused and harassed by a Muslim majority student population.
The only consolation is that a region without law and order cannot last. It will implode or people will take matters into their own hands.
Politicians who oppose Muslim immigration, once almost non-existent, are now among the most popular in some countries like Holland, Austria and the UK, although they are still repressed and persecuted by the elitists.
The elites are losing their power under the weight of the injustice they have wrought. Once a tipping point is reached, it will be a beautiful thing to watch the end of this worldwide dictatorship.
It will come at a cost, but it is our patriotic — and Christian — duty to resist evil.

Golly, does EVERYTHING have to be spelled out or so literal for you people?

Nowhere did I say the two things had anything to do with the ad. I posted the 3am ad just because it made me giggle in light of the topic – Obama is an inexperienced empty suit, who can’t handle his job. And it is a continuation of my comment directly above it.

The links were to provide the actual occurrences that Judge mental was referring to – the terrible PR optics.

If those things had anything to do with the 3am ad they ad would of had to say that Obama wasn’t there to answer the phone because he had a party to get to, or he just doesn’t give a ratsass. Her ad was about not being ready to lead – which he isn’t. Hence calling in the Big Dog.

Remember how Poppy ended the Raygun Recession? Wasn’t by reducing tax revenues.

You are still an idiot. Do you have any sense of what’s happening in the US economy? Unemployment has gotten worse under Obama. GDP has declined. Businesses have gone bankrupt. Home prices have dropped. Banks continue to go broke. Stocks have recovered somewhat, but because of the foreign income of the US corporations, who are increasingly making their money in Asia and other places that pursue smarter, free market economies.

We ought to all be beyond mad, seething, ready to tear their walls down — Bastille mad.The many companies targeted by organizations like the Family Research Council and the American Family Association because of anti-Christian and pro-gay activism were the biggest companies in the US. Ford, Target, Home Depot, Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonald’s, etc. Many are still at it.This is why I have always insisted that free-market capitalism is dead.People on the far left deliberately and quietly jockeyed for high positions in business and finance and took over the market in hopes of capturing it and forcing their clients into submission. Only the family organizations helped back some of them down, but even they were not entirely above board, having received large donations from RINO candidates like Mitt.So even if you look only at US companies and banks, it is clear that there is a concerted effort to take over the country for the 2 main goals of Marxism: wealth distribution and the elimination of Christian values, including family values that are not strictly associated with this one religion but have been hallmarks of civilization itself. But if the US situation is clear enough proof of a Marxist tone, this is further highlighted by a quick look at Europe: The Redcar steel plant in the UK was shut down through government shenanigans and moved to India, where UK taxpayers, after losing 7500 jobs at Redcar, were forced to pay the owners almost a billion dollars in carbon credits (because it is alleged the new plant will be slightly more efficient and burn less carbon).Long before Greece’s economy started to fail, the EU knew that its socialist practices (such as retirement before the age of 60) were irresponsible. The richest Greek, a billionaire, made a cool billion euros on the bailout deal.Anyone in the EU who had looked at Greece’s books shortly after they joined the EU had to have seen they were headed for disaster. The same applies to Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Italy. Why were they allowed to drift away from the founding economic principles?I defy anyone to say it was an accident or that the EU was not keeping close enough tabs on them. The current bailouts, paid for mostly by Germany and to some extent by other rich countries like the UK, are wealth redistribution on perhaps the grandest scale ever seen and it was no accident.Worse, the EU Parliament keeps making laws that are more and more draconian, targeting Christian speech. It will implode or people will take matters into their own hands.Politicians who oppose Muslim immigration, once almost non-existent, are now among the most popular in some countries like Holland, Austria and the UK, although they are still repressed and persecuted by the elitists. The elites are losing their power under the weight of the injustice they have wrought. Once a tipping point is reached, it will be a beautiful thing to watch the end of this worldwide dictatorship. It will come at a cost, but it is our patriotic — and Christian — duty to resist evil.

Can you please expand on this subject with some detail ?

    Okay

As I said, what seems to have occurred in in our 24/7 sound bite news cycle is that the media, and the consumer seem to get caught up in superficial nonsense. I remember them focusing on how often GWB mangled the language, how many vacations he took, his holding hands with the Saudi’s. Now it’s all this superficial stuff with Obama as if it proves something. It doesn’t prove much about him or any president. It’s largely superficial passing nonsense that is exaggerated by the media cycle and partisan rhetoric.

To the tea baggers – please, when you are in DC, don’t come stay in Alexandria. If you do (and I guess the hotels could do with the money) please don’t come drink in my bar like you did last time.

And if you do, please don’t act all surprised when you aren’t welcomed as returning heros. Or when you get told to shut the fuck up. It’s not that we don’t want people criticizing Obama or the Democrats, it’s that calling him a chimp or Muslim or worse doesn’t really count as rational criticism, and our pretty happy diverse community doesn’t appreciate racism and homophobia.

Funny. You’ll have to report back and tell us what if anything happens.

I agree by the way. Someone complaining about Obama doing a lousy job is fine. Personal demeaning insults are another.

So Jim Wallis once said this:

Many of today’s [Vietnamese] refugees were inoculated with a taste for a Western lifestyle during the war and are fleeing to support their consumer habit in other lands.

Obviously, that was said during the Vietnam war. Well he recently said that:

Consumerism is a drug. The drug for an unjust society. It numbs our minds, it quiets our conscience, it [sic] distracts our attention. It’s the drug. And we are addicted. In America, most Christians, most Christians, are much more influenced by American materialism and American nationalism than by the gospel. They are. And that’s why they’re in decline.

As for the militant comment, he was a part of the militant group SDS. Onviously he’s not anymore. But this guy really doesn’t like capitalism. And “American nationalism.” What a fantastic guy, eh? He could stand to read this article from Reason. And this blog post that I found.

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I don’t think you would have been looking in the thread where you made the comment in the first place.

What I find irksome about the continuation of the Bush tax cuts is not so much that some unemployed folks will continue to receive unemployment compensation for a while longer (after all, the REAL unemployment figure is ~17%), but that in passing this continuation BOTH the Republicans AND Democrats have seen fit to laden it with more pork. The reason why our economy is in the tank is because we have too much debt, our government is spending at an enormous rate, our dollar isn’t fit to be used as toilet paper, and our government has run industries offshore with their decades of over taxation, over regulation, and their appeasement of special interests groups, e.g. labor unions. I might not have said all this with the same eloquence as others have said it, but it’s time that we start demanding of our government that they behave responsibly when it comes to spending OUR money.

The sum total of a person’s life is not contained in a few pulled quotes, or even one incident, so I really resist and find fault with the modern habit of characterizing people by some snippet of their life or words. IMO it’s a dishonest act by any intelligent person.

I didn’t get that from your comment at all. What I got was that people were taking things that he said in the past that he does not believe in today. I was simply pointing out that he hasn’t changed at all in some respects. It’s another case of “forgoing the cheap satisfaction of the radical pose for the deep satisfaction of radical ends,” like Van Jones. He was a radical Marxist member of the militant group SDS, now he’s a spiritual adviser to the President. Like Van Jones, he’s still a revolutionary, just a more effective one. In other words, he’s still an anti-capitalist bastard.

By the way, words do matter. Also associations do matter. This is from a debate between Obama and McCain:

MCCAIN: Yes, real quick. Mr. Ayers, I don’t care about an old washed-up terrorist. But as Senator Clinton said in her debates with you, we need to know the full extent of that relationship.
We need to know the full extent of Senator Obama’s relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy. The same front outfit organization that your campaign gave $832,000 for “lighting and site selection.” So all of these things need to be examined, of course.

SCHIEFFER: All right. I’m going to let you respond and we’ll extend this for a moment.

OBAMA: Bob, I think it’s going to be important to just — I’ll respond to these two particular allegations that Senator McCain has made and that have gotten a lot of attention.

In fact, Mr. Ayers has become the centerpiece of Senator McCain’s campaign over the last two or three weeks. This has been their primary focus. So let’s get the record straight. Bill Ayers is a professor of education in Chicago.

Forty years ago, when I was 8 years old, he engaged in despicable acts with a radical domestic group. I have roundly condemned those acts. Ten years ago he served and I served on a school reform board that was funded by one of Ronald Reagan’s former ambassadors and close friends, Mr. Annenberg.
Other members on that board were the presidents of the University of Illinois, the president of Northwestern University, who happens to be a Republican, the president of The Chicago Tribune, a Republican- leaning newspaper.

Mr. Ayers is not involved in my campaign. He has never been involved in this campaign. And he will not advise me in the White House. So that’s Mr. Ayers.

Now, with respect to ACORN, ACORN is a community organization. Apparently what they’ve done is they were paying people to go out and register folks, and apparently some of the people who were out there didn’t really register people, they just filled out a bunch of names.

It had nothing to do with us. We were not involved. The only involvement I’ve had with ACORN was I represented them alongside the U.S. Justice Department in making Illinois implement a motor voter law that helped people get registered at DMVs.

Now, the reason I think that it’s important to just get these facts out is because the allegation that Senator McCain has continually made is that somehow my associations are troubling.

Now it’s important to note that he is distancing himself from Ayers and ACORN. He knows that associations matter, which basically says in the next part coming up. Now I don’t know about Ayers, but the ACORN part was a lie.

Let me tell you who I associate with. On economic policy, I associate with Warren Buffett and former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker. If I’m interested in figuring out my foreign policy, I associate myself with my running mate, Joe Biden or with Dick Lugar, the Republican ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or General Jim Jones, the former supreme allied commander of NATO.

Those are the people, Democrats and Republicans, who have shaped my ideas and who will be surrounding me in the White House.

So he’s basically saying look to the people I surround myself with. I bring this up because Jim Wallis is a guy who has been a spiritual adviser to the President as well as an adviser on policy. Words and associations matter. Ignoring those things is tremendously dishonest.

You people are a bunch of hysterics. Who can waste their time reading most of this stuff, especially the comments coming from the rightwingers. Obama and Clinton are both great figures. This country is in trouble and we’re lucky we have both of these genuine leaders doing their best for their country while you reactionary slackers in the peanut gallery act like spoiled, idiotic children. You’re useless and don’t be surprised if the country doesn’t like the nasty bullies you’ve put into office. We’re not giving this country up to the barbarians without a fight and it’s great that Clinton is helping in such a gracious, truly patriotic fashion.

I suppose it depends on the person, but people to change their attitudes at times and mellow. With Wright the issue was that people were listening to a few short clips and judging a mature life. That strikes me as unfair and unrealistic about people. When you really examine the clips they used with an understanding of different preaching styles they aren’t as bad as they were made out to be. I was never a fan of Jerry Falwell but I don’t think he’s a scumbag based on a few things he said. I know he really helped people as well.

Van Jones is a little different.
It’s another case of “forgoing the cheap satisfaction of the radical pose for the deep satisfaction of radical ends, needs to be seen in context. Jones actually embraced capitalism as being more practical and having more impact than protests. That was the significant detail that Beck failed to mention.

As far as Wallis, I guess the question is what kind of revolution is he aiming for? Having studied the New Testament quite a bit myself I think Wallis has a much better grip on what Jesus taught than Beck does. Early on in their disagreement Wallis offered to go on Beck’s show and discuss social justice and Christianity but Beck hasn’t accepted that offer. Beck works best when there’s not someone knowledgeable right there to challenge him.

    Calvin said:
By the way, words do matter. Also associations do matter.

I never said they didn’t. The important thing is to view them accurately and in the proper context. BTW; Kennedy and MLK, both significant men in our history , were notorious womanizers. MLK , whom Beck praised, was criticized for having close friend and associate who was a communist , and taught reparations just as James Cone did. I guess those things were negative for some folks but didn’t matter when it came time to praise MLK at the rally. If you wanted to you can go into the life of practically anybody’s life and find the worst bits and focus only on those bits. Real life and real people are more than that.

The only reason Obama even had to distance himself from Ayers is because of the bullshit that was being made out of it. If dishonesty was involved it was from those intentionally blowing it all out of proportion to make him look bad. And ACORN? I don’t know what you think that Beck clip demonstrates. 3 second clips taken out of context. The whole ACORN voter fraud thing was another fabrication.
