GOP Rep. Rips Trump Over ‘Spygate’ Claims: Another ‘Thing to Tweet About Knowing That It’s Not True’
Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL), a top member of the House Intelligence Committee, has come out strongly against President Donald Trump‘s unsubstantiated “Spygate” claims.
“What is the point of saying that there was a spy in the campaign when there was none?” Rooney, who has served three terms in office and is not seeking re-election in November, told Politico on Wednesday. “You know what I’m saying? It’s like, ‘Lets create this thing to tweet about knowing that it’s not true.’”
“Maybe it’s just to create more chaos but it doesn’t really help the case,” he added.
Though fellow House Intelligence Committee member Trey Gowdy (R-SC), also came out in support the FBI’s use of an informant on the Trump campaign, Politico calls Rooney’s remarks “the most forceful repudiation to date from a Republican lawmaker.”
Meanwhile, the Trump camp has gone after Gowdy for his comments and Rooney suspects that they will go after him as well.
“Look, if you want to disagree with what we were briefed on and say that it was a spy? That’s fine, I guess,” Rooney explained. “We would just disagree with that. And if that makes us RINOs [Republicans In Name Only] because we have a different opinion about what the FBI was doing, then I guess we’re RINOs.”
