‘I Think He’s Doing OK’: Podesta Has Lukewarm Praise for Trump’s Foreign Trip
John Podesta had some lukewarm praise for President Donald Trump’s performance on his first foreign trip, in which the president has already made stops in Saudi Arabia, Israel and Italy.
Podesta, former campaign chairman of Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 presidential bid, discussed Trump’s presidency in a discussion with Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post.
“I think he’s doing OK,” Podesta said, when asked how Trump was handling the trip. He remarked on Trump’s “gaffe” in Israel, when the president gave a strange response to a question about revealing classified information to Russian officials.
Podesta otherwise noted “it’s a pretty scripted trip, so he’s basically not interacting with the press, he’s reading words of the teleprompter.”
“And he’s in very friendly audiences,” he added.
“I think when he goes to Europe, that will be a little bit of a different story,” the Democratic operative noted, in light of the president’s frequent derision of NATO.
“He’ll face a little bit of a tougher audience, so we’ll see how he does there,” Podesta concluded.
