NYT: Trump Spent ‘Much’ of Saturday ‘Watching Old TV Clips of Him’ Slamming Obama on Shutdown
A New York Times report from late yesterday featured a rather notable detail about how President Trump spent day one of the shutdown.
There’s been much talk about how the President was unhappy his planned weekend trip to Mar-a-Lago was axed amid the shutdown scrambling. The Times reports that Trump was indeed “irritated” to have missed the event.
But the report also says he spent much of the day watching old clips of himself:
On Saturday, the president was left alternately defiant and angry, self-pitying and frustrated. He argued to aides that he did not deserve the blame he was taking, but without a credible deal on the table, there was little for him to do. Irritated to have missed his big event in Florida, Mr. Trump spent much of his day watching old TV clips of him berating President Barack Obama for a lack of leadership during the 2013 government shutdown, a White House aide said, seeming content to sit back and watch the show.
In the past few days, there’s been a lot of focus on political flip-flopping from Democrats and Republicans on shutdowns between 2013 and now. Trump was critical of Obama at the time and even tweeted this:
My sense is that people are far angrier at the President than they are at Congress re the shutdown—an interesting turn!
