During President Donald Trump’s U.S. Coast Guard Academy commencement address Wednesday, General John Kelly got caught on a hot mic joking that the president should use a ceremonial sword on the press.
After Trump was presented with a ceremonial saber, the Department of Homeland Security secretary leaned in towards the president and quipped, “You can use that on the press sir.”
Trump laughed and responded, “Yeah, that’s right.”
Trump’s disdain for the media has been documented ad nauseam, and amidst reports that White House staffers are getting creative with their attempts to gain the boss’s attention, Kelly’s joke could be a stab at flattery.
In Trump’s commencement address at the academy he slammed the media, claiming “no politician in history… has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
