Trump Confirms He Said Shutdown Could Go ‘Months or Even Years’: ‘I Don’t Think It Will But I Am Prepared’

President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters this afternoon what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) quoted him as saying in a meeting today on the shutdown.

“We told the president, we need the government open,” Schumer said today. “He resisted. In fact, he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”

CBS News’ Major Garrett asked Trump if he said that. “I did,” the President confirmed.

“I don’t think it will, but I am prepared,” Trump continued. “And I think I can speak for Republicans in the House and Republicans in the Senate––they feel very strongly about having a safe country, having a border that makes sense.”
