President Donald Trump told reporters during a photo-op with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu that he never mentioned “Israel” during his controversial meeting with Russian officials.
Trump reportedly divulged highly classified Israeli intelligence on an ISIS plot to Russian officials during a meeting at the White House in early May, a flub that was widely derided and raised concerns amongst Israeli officials.
Following a photo-op with Netanyahu Monday, Trump made sure to tell reporters that he never mentioned the intelligence came from Israel in his meeting with Sergey Kislyak and Segey Lavrov.
“Folks, folks, just so you understand, just so you understand, I never mentioned the word or the name Israel during that conversation,” Trump said.
Of course, reports detailing what was divulged in the meeting never alleged that Trump mentioned Israel as the source of the intelligence. The uproar resulting from Trump’s comments focused on the notion that he would pass on an allies’ classified intelligence to Russia officials.
It’s also worth noting that Trump did not attempt to deny that he divulged the classified information to Lavrov and Kislyak.
