Prior to boarding Marine One and leaving the White House for the weekend, President Donald Trump stopped for a few minutes to speak to reporters and provided some nice Friday afternoon newsworthy bits. Besides hitting on the Tom Price controversy and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, the president also weighed in on the NFL protest issue that he made into a huge national story last week.
“I’ve spoken with owners, and I think it’s coming together,” Trump said when asked if he had conversations with owners such as Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys.
He added that he heard about, but didn’t watch, the players on Thursday night — who stood during the anthem and linked arms.
“That shows respect for our country, our flag, and for the national anthem,” Trump stated. “So I’m very happy I heard that. And they should stand. You have to stand.”
He concluded by noting that he spoke to numerous owners and that he has “many friends” among the NFL ownership.
